    Abstract We introduces a novel architecture for next generation passive optical network (PON) based on the employment of sparse code multiple access (SCMA) combined with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation, in which the binary data is directly encoded to multi-dimensional codewords and then spread over OFDM subcarriers. The feasibility of SCMA-OFDM-PON is verified with experimental demonstration. We show that the SCMA-OFDM offers 150% overloading gain in the number of optical network units compared with the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing access. Highlights A SCMA-OFDM scheme is proposed for passive optical network. An overloading gain of 150% in the number of optical network units is achieved. The feasibility of SCMA-OFDM-PON is verified with experimental demonstration.

    Abstract We propose a fiber nonlinearity-tolerant optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) estimation method for high speed long haul coherent optical fiber transmission system. The correlation function of the amplitude noise and a calibration factor ξ are utilized to correct nonlinearity-induced distortions for the first time when the statistical moments-based method (SMB method) is applied. ξ depends on not only transmission distances but also launch powers. Besides, we put forward a fitting formula for optimal ξ and OSNR estimation results still keep valid regardless of transmission distances and launch powers. Compared with current existing OSNR estimation methods, the proposed method functions well in highly nonlinear systems and is demonstrated to be feasible and more accurate. OSNR estimation errors are below 0.94dB after calibration over a wide OSNR range from 10dB to 28dB in a 112-Gb/s polarization-multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying (PM-QPSK) system when the launch power is up to 8dBm and the transmission distance is as long as 2000km. Highlights A new OSNR monitoring method is proposed in presence of strong fiber nonlinearities. It is applied when distance is up to 2000km and launch power is up to 8dBm. The correlation function and a calibration factor ξ are combined with statistical moments-based method. It is easy to be implemented with the formula for the calibration factor ξ . The method achieves monitoring error less than 0.94dB in the OSNR range of 10–28dB.

    Abstract Spectral Amplitude Coding – Optical Code Division Multiple Access systems are gaining popularity due to their property of very low multiple access interference. A new code with zero cross correlation, termed as Zero Cross Correlation Code (ZCCC) is proposed. Code construction algorithm is designed with any weight for any number of users having constant, or variable weights. Variable weight (VW) codes give different quality of service, and are suitable, and useful for multimedia applications. The performance of proposed codes is analyzed using direct detection technique. Numerical results show that the use of proposed code yields lower bit error rate, and/or require lower code length than existing codes. Simulation results on OptiSystem 13 also show better performance of proposed code than existing ZCC code (Anuar et al., 2009). Proposed ZCCC requires only two filtering elements irrespective of weight, and construct codes without using mapping as compared to ZCC codes. Highlights An algorithm to construct constant and variable weights ZCCC without mapping is proposed. Code is designed with any integer value of weight for any number of users. Code is suitable for multimedia service. Code is analysis for BER using direct detection technique.

    Abstract The performance of plastic optical fiber sensors in detecting nitro aromatic explosives 1,4-dinitrobenzene (DNB) have been investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy and analyzed by using fluorescence quenching technique. The plastic optical fiber utilized is 90 degrees cut tip and dip-coated with conjugated polymer MEH-PPV poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] thin films for detection conjugants. The thicknesses of the MEH-PPV coating were varied to improvise the sensitivity whilst slowly reducing the fluorescence intensity. It was shown that fluorescence intensity from thinner film decreased by (82% in 40s) in the presence of DNB signifying an improvement of 28% reduction with time 13s less than that of the thicker film. Highlights Presents cut tip plastic optical fiber sensors detecting nitroexplosive. The mechanism relies on fluorescence quenching properties of MEH-PPV polymer thin film. Fluorescence decrease with time was recorded by introducing DNB. Concentration of fluorophore interacting with DNB as related to volume was observed. The Stern-Volmer equations were used for the analysis.

    Abstract The fabrication and characterization of IR chalcogenide polarization-maintaining (PM) step-index optical fibers with elliptical-core and 1-in-line-core have been reported for the first time. An improved isolated co-extrusion method was used to fabricate these core-shaped PM fibers. The elliptical core had a horizontal radius of a=3.66μm, vertical radius of b=1.83μm and the 1-in-line core of a=4.83μm, b=1.42μm, respectively. Single-mode PM beam spots were observed for the elliptical-core and 1-in-line-core fibers in the near-field energy distributions. The highest values of birefringence of the elliptical-core and 1-in-line-core fibers are 2.09×10 −4 at 2.7μm and 3.272×10 −4 at 2.8μm, respectively. The extinction ratios of −3.7dB and −2dB were achieved in fibers of 0.5m long with elliptical-core and 1-in-line-core, respectively. Highlights Two kinds of polarization-maintaining chalcogenide fibers (PMF) were prepared by an isolated co-extrusion method. The differences between elliptical-core and 1-in-line-core fibers were systematically investigated, such as the polarization-maintaining ability and their correlations. The extinction ratio measurements were performed with comparisons and lively illustrations.

    Abstract A hybrid fiber-optic sensor consisting of a micro extrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometer (MEFPI) and an etched fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed, which can measure strain and magnetic field simultaneously. The etched FBG is sealed in a capillary with ferrofluids to detect the surrounding magnetic field. FBG with small diameter will be more sensitive to magnetic field is confirmed by simulation results. The MEFPI sensor that is prepared through welding a short section of hollow-core fiber (HCF) with single-mode fiber (SMF) is effective for strain detection. The experiment shows that strain and magnetic field can be successfully simultaneously detected based on hybrid MEFPI/FBG sensor. The sensitivities of the strain and magnetic field intensity are measured to be up to 1.41pm/με and 5.11pm/mT respectively. There is a negligible effect on each other, hence simultaneously measuring strain and magnetic field is feasible. It is anticipated that such easy preparation, compact and low-cost fiber-optic sensors for simultaneous measurement of strain and magnetic field could find important applications in practice. Highlights A fiber-optic sensor with an F-P Interferometer and an etched FBG is proposed. The proposed sensor can measure strain and magnetic field simultaneously. The etched FBG is sealed in a capillary with ferrofluids to detect magnetic field. The sensitivities of the strain measurement is up to 1.41pm/με. The sensitivities of the magnetic field measurement is up to 5.11pm/mT.

    Abstract In software defined optical networks (SDON), the centralized control plane may encounter numerous intrusion threatens which compromise the security level of provisioned services. In this paper, the issue of control plane security is studied and two machine-learning-based control plane intrusion detection techniques are proposed for SDON with properly selected features such as bandwidth, route length, etc. We validate the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed techniques by simulations. Results show an accuracy of 83% for intrusion detection can be achieved with the proposed machine-learning-based control plane intrusion detection techniques. Highlights In this paper, the issue of control plane security is studied with potential intrusion threats. Two machine-learning-based control plane intrusion detection techniques are proposed for SDON with properly selected features such as bandwidth, route length, etc. Simulation results show an accuracy of 83% for intrusion detection can be achieved.

    Abstract In the present study we report the fabrication and characterization of no-core fiber sensor (NCFS) using smart hydrogel coating for pH measurement. The no-core fiber (NCF) is stubbed between two single-mode fibers with SMA connector before immobilizing of smart hydrogel. The wavelength interrogation technique is used to calculate the sensitivity of the proposed sensor. The result shows a high sensitivity of 1.94 nm/pH for a wide range of pH values varied from 3 to 10 with a good linear response. In addition to high sensitivity, the fabricated sensor provides a fast response time with a good stability, repeatability and reproducibility. Highlights In present work an experimental study is carried out on NCF based pH sensor. Swelling/shrinkage is the sensing phenomenon of deposited polyacrylamide hydrogel. Sensitivity of sensor is based on wavelength interrogation techniques. In addition of high sensitivity the fabricated sensor exhibits fast response time with excellent stability.
