    Abstract This paper addresses the detection of weak astronomical signals that are contaminated by strong frequency-hopping (FH) interferers and suffer from missing samples. The problem is considered in the time–frequency domain and we successively suppress artifacts due to missing samples, estimate and remove FH interferers, and detect the weak astronomical signals. More specifically, we first suppress the artifacts due to missing samples by developing a waveform-adaptive time–frequency kernel. The instantaneous spectra of the FH interferers are then estimated using a sparsity-based approach that takes the inherent properties of FH signals into account. Finally, a sparse coherent integrated cubic phase function is applied to effectively detect weak astronomical chirp components over a long integration time. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

    Abstract In this work we present a deep learning framework for video compressive sensing. The proposed formulation enables recovery of video frames in a few seconds at significantly improved reconstruction quality compared to previous approaches. Our investigation starts by learning a linear mapping between video sequences and corresponding measured frames which turns out to provide promising results. We then extend the linear formulation to deep fully-connected networks and explore the performance gains using deeper architectures. Our analysis is always driven by the applicability of the proposed framework on existing compressive video architectures. Extensive simulations on several video sequences document the superiority of our approach both quantitatively and qualitatively. Finally, our analysis offers insights into understanding how dataset sizes and number of layers affect reconstruction performance while raising a few points for future investigation.

    Abstract As there are data redundancies in successive frames in a multi-frame super resolution (SR) algorithm, one can expect that discarding some of these superfluous frames would have no impact on the quality of the high resolution (HR) output image. The present paper presents an efficient algorithm for selecting the proper combination of the minimum frames required for multi-frame SR algorithms so as to not only preserve the quality of the obtained HR output, but also reduce the SR procedure complexity and memory. To achieve this, the present study first seeks to prove that minimizing the spectral interference between the selected frames for SR procedure will result in maximizing the HR output power. Then, the criterion for measuring the Upper Bound on Spectral Interferences (UBSI) among the selected frames for SR procedure is presented; the formulation is expressed in such a way that it can be extended to global sub-pixel translations between frames. Our proposed frame selection algorithm evaluates all candidate combinations from input frames so that the best option capable of minimizing the UBSI can be selected. In order to evaluate our proposed frame selection algorithm, five well-known SR image reconstruction methods are applied both in four standard simulated images and in three well known real video sequences, employing two different procedures: Using our proposed frame selection algorithm and otherwise. The obtained results indicate that when our proposed frame selection algorithm is applied, the quality of the HR output images is preserved tantamount to considering all available frames. Besides, the computational complexity of the SR algorithms is dramatically reduced adopting the proposed frame selection algorithm, for the number of frames engaged in the SR is diminished. Also compared with the SR algorithms presented in the literature, our proposed frame selection method takes relatively negligible time to execute.

    Abstract The design of adaptive finite impulse response filters is a linear optimization problem and the design of adaptive infinite impulse response (IIR) filters in the presence of observation noise is a nonlinear optimization problem. This paper considers the parameter estimation issues of an infinite impulse response (IIR) filter with colored noise which is treated as an autoregressive process. The key is to investigate novel estimation methods of an IIR filter with an autoregressive disturbance noise from the viewpoint of the observation data filtering. Firstly, we simply give the least mean square (LMS) algorithm for an IIR filter with autoregressive noise and derive a multi-innovation LMS (MI-LMS) algorithm for improving the parameter estimation accuracy. Secondly, we present a data filtering based LMS algorithm and a data filtering based MI-LMS algorithm for further improving the parameter estimation accuracy. The theoretical analyses show that the proposed algorithms are convergent and the simulation results indicate that the MI-LMS algorithm and the data filtering based MI-LMS algorithm are superior to the LMS algorithm and the data filtering based LMS algorithm in accuracy, respectively. The proposed methods in this paper have been extended to an IIR filter with autoregressive moving average noise. Finally, two simulation examples test the performances of the proposed algorithms.

    Abstract Several papers have been published recently on the quasi-maximum likelihood (QML) approach for the polynomial phase signals (PPS) parameter estimation. The QML is powerful alternative to phase differentiation (PD) based techniques. It achieves the Cramer–Rao lower bound (CRLB) for low SNR values even for high-order PPS. The QML is generalized for signals with non-polynomial modulation and can work for impulsive noise environment. Since it is based on the linear time–frequency (TF) representation, short-time Fourier transform (STFT), it is suitable for estimation of multicomponent (mc) PPS. The goal of this review article is to summarize all developments of this tool. The QML versions for both one-dimensional (1-D) and two-dimensional (2-D) signals, for known and unknown order of phase polynomial, and for non-polynomial frequency modulated (FM) signals, are presented. In addition, estimation of mc and aliased PPSs sampled bellow the sampling theorem rate are also considered as well as application of the random sample consensus (RANSAC) algorithm for further reduction of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) threshold. Generalization of the QML approach to the direction-of-arrival (DOA) of the PPS signals impinging on the sensor array network with some open issues in the QML theory and applications are also addressed. Several examples demonstrate accuracy and advantages of the reviewed techniques.

    Abstract In modern communication network such as a public Internet, random losses of information can be recovered by frame expansions. In this paper, we think about the transport protocol that delivers a coefficient of frame expansions with some probability of failure via multiple intermediate nodes. By this protocol, we abstract the transmission as a Markov process. In this case, even if the probabilities of erasures are close to the 1/2, we show that the reconstruction error can be minimized as small as possible by using frames with high redundancy. Furthermore, we set up a probability model for constructing optimal Parseval frames that are robust to one probabilistic erasure. It is shown that probabilistic modeled Parseval frames are more effective than traditional Parseval frames on recovering the signal with probabilistic erasures.

    Abstract In this paper, a novel efficient parameter estimation method is proposed for maneuvering targets based on the stepped frequency radar. Since the envelope migration can be represented by the exponential phase variance with respect to range frequency, the received echoes are first converted into the range frequency domain and modeled as cubic phase (CP) signals. Then, a new correlation transform, referred to as recursive delay correlation transform (RDCT), is defined and applied to estimate the parameters of maneuvering targets. Since RDCT is simple and only requires the fast Fourier transform (FFT) and the nonuniform FFT (NUFFT), the searching operation is unnecessary and the computational cost is significantly reduced. Compared to the other four representative methods, the proposed RDCT-based method has no error propagation and can greatly improve the anti-noise performance on the premise of retaining the computational efficiency, achieving a good balance between the computational complexity and estimation performance. Theoretical analyses of anti-noise and anti-aliasing performance, and several simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed parameter estimation method.

    Abstract The design of ( 1 + α ) order, 0 s α in terms of second order rational function using the continued fraction expansion method for the design of fractional order low pass Butterworth filters (FOLBFs) is recently reported in literature, however, such a design technique is non-optimal. In this work, the metaheuristic global search process of GSA efficiently explores and intensely exploits the nonlinear, non-uniform, multidimensional, and multimodal FOLBF design problem error landscape. At the end of the iterative search routine of GSA, the optimal values of the coefficients in terms of the third order rational approximations are achieved which accurately approximate the magnitude response of the ideal FOLBF. The proposed GSA based FOLBFs consistently achieve the best solution quality with the fastest convergence rate as compared with the designs based on Real coded Genetic Algorithm (RGA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Comparison with the recent literature also demonstrates the superiority of the proposed designs. SPICE simulations justify the design feasibility of the proposed FOLBF models.
