    Abstract The driving comfort, which is mainly determined by the pavement evenness, is one of the most important indexes for evaluating the pavement service condition. Current evaluation indexes for the pavement evenness, such as the international roughness index (IRI), are mainly determined by the vibration acceleration method. However, the driver is at the core in the human-vehicle–road-environment system. Few studies have focused on the physiological state as a response to accelerations induced by pavement unevenness and evaluate the driving comfort on this basis. In this study, the Root Mean Square of the Successive Differences (RMSSD) derived from the driver's heart rate variability (HRV) in the time domain and was selected as an index value for the driver's physiological state. Using an advanced indoor testing platform, the RMSSD values of five drivers were recorded by a KF2 electrocardiogram tester. The relationship between the RMSSD, the driving speed and the IRI underwent detailed analyses. The results of the tests show that the vertical vibration is identical when the drivers are driving on the simulated pavement with the same IRI value; however, the RMSSD values of different drivers were different, i.e., the perception of the same pavement evenness is subjective. Therefore, when evaluating the driving comfort based on the pavement evenness, it is necessary to consider the physiological index. The results obtained in this study have proven the feasibility of measurement of RMSSD value to evaluate the pavement evenness and driving comfort. They are therefore a powerful augmentation of existing evaluation methods and also provide a new reference for further optimization of the pavement surface performance.

    Abstract The purpose of spectral refinement is to obtain a finer spectrum structure so as to realize a more accurate spectral measurement. In this paper, a micro frequency-shift based spectral refinement algorithm (MFS-FFT) is introduced. This algorithm can efficiently perform any multiple spectral refinement and achieve the refinement over the entire frequency axis without band selection. Two kinds of micro frequency shifters suitable for this algorithm are discussed. The influence of window functions on this algorithm is also analyzed. Compared with the Chirp Z-transform (CZT), the proposed algorithm can achieve the same accuracy as CZT. Our complexity analysis has shown that when the refinement multiple is less than six, the computational cost is always smaller than that of CZT. A spindle speed ramp-up milling experiment has been performed in order to verify the proposed algorithm. Experimental results show that the MFS-FFT algorithm can effectively improve the accuracy of spectral estimation. Highlights A new spectral refinement algorithm named MFS-FFT was proposed. MFS-FFT perform spectral refinement over the entire frequency axis. When the refinement multiple is below six, the cost is smaller than that of CZT. This algorithm has been verified by a spindle speed ramp-up milling experiment.

    Abstract A low-cost monitoring system for grid-connected PV system is presented. It is based on an inexpensive and available hardware, as well as easy software which does not require any high specific skills and which can be written in different programming languages (C/C++, python, etc). The proposed system uses a 16-bits resolution with a good accuracy and enough reliability responding to the most IEC standards requirements on PV applications. It is composed of a group of sensors measuring meteorological parameters (Solar irradiance, ambient temperature, wind speed and direction) and module temperatures while electrical parameters (currents and voltages in both sides, DC and AC) are numerically taken from the inverter. The collected data are first conditioned using precision electronic circuits, processed by the PcDuino board, and then stored in an SD card in a form that can be easily used, not requiring any external computer. The system allows local storage and distance data transfer through Internet. The PV system users are informed about its operation and each incident is reported by an e-mail message generated by an error notification routine. The proposed architecture can be built easily; it has low energy consumption and enough flexibility for potential future modifications. The system has been installed to monitor 20 outdoor grid-connected PV systems more than one year ago and all its units operate in a satisfying manner. Highlights We have developed and built a data acquisition system for grid-connected PV plants. It is accurate despite its low cost arising from the use of a microcomputer board and inexpensive sensors. We have described the system architecture and the data collection methods used. It has been used for grid-connected PV systems spread over 20 Moroccan cities for more than one year. We have also compared our data with those obtained with calibrated commercial sensors.

    Abstract Ultrasonic gas flow meter has unique advantages and it is especially suitable for measuring the gas flow rate in large diameter pipes. However, the energy of the ultrasonic signal is seriously weakened when it propagates in the gas flow, which results in echo amplitude small and susceptible to noise interference. As the measured gas velocity increases, the propagation path of the ultrasonic signal will deviate, which leads to the further weakening of energy and the deviation of the peak points. As a result, it is difficult for the commonly used method to determine the feature point and obtain the accurate measurement, especially in high flow rate. Therefore the characteristics of the ultrasonic echo energy are studied, and a digital signal processing method based on peak fitting of echo energy is proposed for ultrasonic gas flow meter. The relationship between echo energy and EEG (echo energy gradient) is analyzed, and the range of the optimal echo energy point is obtained. Based on this range, one echo energy point is selected, and the value of the echo energy point is selected as a standard to locate the four nearest echo energy peak points for linear fitting. Also, the method of determining the more accurate echo energy peak point is proposed, which further ensures the accuracy of the linear fitting. The echo energy point corresponding to the energy value on the fitting straight line is found as the feature point for determining the arrival time of the echo, and the ultrasonic propagation time is calculated to obtain the gas flow rate. This digital signal processing method is implemented in the digital system in real time, and the calibration experiments are performed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method and the developed meter. Highlights The characteristics of the ultrasonic echo energy are analyzed. A method is studied to obtain the echo energy point range of high stability. Echo energy peak fitting based signal processing method is proposed. The calibration experiments are performed to verify the validity. The maximum measurable flow of ultrasonic gas flow meter is improved.

    Abstract A compact thermopower measurement system has been indigenously designed, developed, and tested in-house by performing the measurements of the electron transport properties of reactively sputtered indium and nitrogen co-doped ZnO thin films (In, N: ZnO). This setup is capable of measuring the absolute thermoelectric power (TEP), also called absolute thermopower or absolute Seebeck coefficient, of any sample from 400 to 20 K efficiently. The sensitivity, accuracy, reliability, and reproducibility of this thermopower measurement system have been investigated by extending the test measurements on other reference materials, namely Cu, Ni, Al, Pb, and Sb. In all cases, the measurement error of the setup was found to be less than 3%. In order to detect the p-type conductivity in co-doped ZnO thin films, particularly at low temperature, a series of thermopower experiments were conducted. These measurements exhibited negative Seebeck coefficient down to 40 K establishing the n-type behavior of the co-doped ZnO films. Highlights A Seebeck coefficient measurement system has been designed, developed and tested. The reported design is capable of measuring the thermopower in 300 K–40 K range. Thermopower measurement of In and N co-doped ZnO thin films have been carried out. The new technique was explored for the investigation of conductivity type carrier.

    Abstract The present study aims to optimize the Abrasive Water Jet Machining parameters while machining aluminium/tungsten carbide composites. Investigations were carried on 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 wt% tungsten carbide reinforced composite specimens fabricated by stir casting technique. Response surface methodology was employed to explore the influence of abrasive jet parameters and their relations on the responses. Microstructure of the machined surfaces was examined by scanning electron microscope. Material removal rate is greatly influenced by transverse speed followed by % reinforcement and standoff distance respectively, while surface roughness is highly influenced by % tungsten carbide followed by transverse speed and standoff distance. The optimum parameter set in maximizing the material removal rate and minimizing the surface roughness is standoff distance – 4.22 mm, transverse speed – 223.28 mm/min, and percentage WC – 2.10%. The experimental results and multi response optimization obtained provide a technical database for industrial applications.

    Abstract The effects of closure strips was investigated by combining a distributed optical fibre sensing technology with a conventional monitoring scheme for analysing strain distribution, subsidence, earth pressure, and structural stress. It was found that the changes of the structural stress in each block were small and the strain distribution on the block surface was uniform. The closure strips effectively reduced the stress concentration and cracks induced by differential settlement and earth pressure of different RC blocks. The lock head BP underwent coordinated deformation after the sealing of the closure strips. This indicated that the construction of blocks exerted negligible interactive effects because of the closure strips. The results of some conventional point sensing methods, such as the rebar stress, earth pressure and subsidence show the same conclusion. The feasibility and effectiveness of distributed optical fibre sensing technology for structural monitoring of navigation lock construction were also verified. Highlights We report a method to evaluate the effects of closure strips. The blocks exerted negligible interactive effects according to the monitoring. Distributed optical fibre sensor can reveal the global strain status of structure.

    Abstract Considering that the quartz crystal resonant (QCR) sensor with the oscillation circuit as a driver will stop oscillation when it encounters a large damping medium. A QCR sensor excitation method based on direct digital synthesis (DDS) was presented in this paper. Meanwhile, a fast frequency tracking algorithm based on variable step size and variable interval was designed. The designed excitation and frequency measurement method was integrated into a complete frequency excitation and tracking system by microprocessor and the system was applied to the dew point sensor. Firstly, the accuracy and reliability of the frequency tracking system was validated, the frequency identification results has a relative error of 0.97 Hz compared with the Agilent 4294A impedance analyzer. Secondly, the sensor was tested in the range of 0–20 °C dew point temperature (DP), and the dew point was identified by judging the frequency shift. The maximum error was 0.3 °C DP compared with the MICHELL S4000 dew point meter. The results showed that the dew point resonant sensor based on the frequency excitation and tracking system has fast and accurate characteristics in dew point identification and measurement, and can overcome the disadvantage of stop oscillation when it encounters a large damping medium.

    Abstract The paper presents the strategies involved in making a stand-alone cascade control system as an Internet enabled one without advent of a dedicated instrument server. The cascaded processes, such as level and flow are independently controlled by particle swarm optimized (PSO) proportional, integral-derivative (PID) and proportional-integral (PI) controller, respectively. The wide area network (WAN) is established wirelessly by using an on-chip Wi-Fi enabled microcontroller, CC3200 that is directly interfaced with level and flow transmitters. The time delays, such as feed forward and feedback that are associated with internet communication are successfully compensated by involving model predictive control (MPC). A private web server is created with adequate data security features to publish and subscribe the real time process data. The web page is enabled with graphical user interface (GUI) that supports real-time plots; control and data logging features. The performance of IoT enabled cascade control system is validated through various metrics, such as rise time, settling time, integral square and integral absolute errors.
