    초록

    The last instar larva of the saicine assassin bug Exaeretosoma cheesmanae Elkins, 1962, known from New Guinea, is described and illustrated. The differences between macropterous and apterous larvae are presented. The larval characters separating the genus Exaeretosoma Elkins, 1962 from other genera of Saicinae are discussed.

    Two new species of the genus Leptoneta belonging to Leptonetidae are newly described from Korea. They are ground-inhabiting leptonetid spiders, Leptoneta spinipalpus sp. nov. from Kwangreung and Leptoneta yebongsanensis sp. nov. from Mt. Yebong, Kyunggi-do in Korea.

    A total of three species in the genus Stenamma are reported from Korea. Among them, S. ussuriensis Amol'di is new to the Korean peninsula. In addition, we add the first locality record of S. owstoni from South Korea. The SEM photos and illustrations of the workers of each species are provided.

    초록

    Two new species of the genus Maliattha Walker, 1863: M. orbifera sp. n. from Nepal and North Vietnam, and M. volodia sp. n. from Taiwan are described. Photos of adults and genitalia of the species and their biological notes are given, and the table of the diagnostic features of the externally confusable species is presented.

    In the course of taxonomical study on the oribatid mites of Korea, a new species, Damaeus (Hypodamaeus) barbatulus sp. n., belonging to the subgenus Hypodamaeus is described. This new species are easily distinguishable from other known congeneric members by the small body size (475 x $302\mu\textrm{m}$ ); long, undulate, and glabrous sensilli; propodolateral apophysis of thum-like with parallel sided and directed antero-laterad present; tectum of podocephalic fosa (t) well developed; all notogastral setae (except pseudanal setae with smooth) thinner, medium length and roughened densely with rather long barbs; all ventral setae minutely roughened and tibia of leg II with 4 setae.

    An endoparasitic wasp, Cotesia plutellae, inhibits pupal metamorphosis of diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella. The parasitized larvae extended their larval stage about 2 days at 25 $^{\circ}C$ and died after escape of wasp larvae for pupation. We set up a hypothesis that the wasp parasitization inhibits juvenile hormone (JH) degradation, which leads to extend larval stage and blocks metamorphosis. In this study, the activities of JH esterase (JHE), a major JH degrading enzyme in hemolymph, were analyzed by use of a surrogate substrate, HEPTAT (methyl 1-heptylthioacetothioate). Hemolymph JHE activities of P. xylostella showed a typical Michaelis-Menten enzyme kinetics in response to HEPTAT, where it exhibited K $\_$ M/ at 19.7 ${\mu}$ M and $V_{max}$ at 228.8 ${\mu}$ M/min/ ${\mu}$ 1. The parasitized C. plutellae did not exhibit decrease of the JHE activity, but rather kept high JHE activity during the extended larval period.

    An evaluation of data transformations was made for constructing the reliable spatial models of the greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood) populations in a commercial cherry tomato greenhouse. A Box-Cox power transformation that is useful family of transformations was applied to original data sets. The ability of the transformations to correct for the heterogeneity of variance was tested with Shapiro-Wilk W statistics. After finding the appropriate transformations, empirical variograms were calculated and fitted to spherical model. In this study, the data transformations can stable variogram modeling by means of converting non-normal data to normal. The model was validated with new data set by comparing the deviation between observed and predicted values, using a leave-one-out method. Among the data transformations tested, log $\_$ e/ ( $\chi$ +0.5) and ( $\chi$ +0.5) $\^$ 1/4/ transformations were found to be appropriate at correcting for the heterogeneity of variance. According to the leave-one-out cross validation, the ( $\chi$ +0.5) $\^$ 1/4/ transformation was better than the log $\_$ e/ ( $\chi$ +0.5) transformation. However, both transformations produced a systemic deviation: the predicted mean was always smaller than the observed mean. No transformations were found to be appropriate, when a proportion of empty sample units (no individuals were observed) was higher than 0.2. Moreover, in this study, the abnormal high density of sample units made inappropriate spherical variogram modeling.

    Biology of Menochilus sexmaculatus Fab. and Coccinella undecimpunctata L. on alfalfa aphid Therioaphis trifolii Monell were investigated during winter season at Tando Jam, Sindh, Pakistan. The latent period of M. sexmaculatus was 31.7 $\pm$ 0.3 and C. undecimpunctata 6.7 $\pm$ 0.1 seconds. Duration of copulation in M. sexmaculatus and C. undecimpunctata were 81.8 $\pm$ 5.4 and 64.5 $\pm$ 6.1 minutes. The oviposition and post-oviposition period of M. sexmaculatus, were 27.4 $\pm$ 4.1 and 4.5 $\pm$ 0.3 days and C. undecimpunctata, were 19.9 $\pm$ 5.2 and 3.8 $\pm$ 0.4 days. Fecundity per female was observed 602 $\pm$ 75.3 for M. sexmaculatus and 761 $\pm$ 85.2 for C. undecimpunctata. The mean egg periods of M. sexmaculatus and C. undecimpunctata were 8.6 $\pm$ 1.2 and 7.3 $\pm$ 1.0 days. Larval duration for first, second, third and fourth instars of M. sexmaculatus were 7.3 $\pm$ 0.6, 4.3 $\pm$ 0.2, 3.8 $\pm$ 0.3 and 6.7 $\pm$ 1.1 days. The pupal period of M. sexmaculatus was 3.6 $\pm$ 0.3 and C. undecimpunctata was 5.1 $\pm$ 0.5 days. The adult period of M. sexmaculatus, (female and male) under this study was 34.9 $\pm$ 4.8 and 29.7 $\pm$ 1.2 days.

    The chinch bug, Blissus leucopterus leucopterus (Say), has become an important early-season pest of corn, Zea mays L., in the southeastern United States. Information on overwintering of chinch bugs is available but it is primarily from studies conducted in the central and midwestern states. Studies were conducted to describe chinch bug overwintering sites, changes in population densities in bromesedge, Andropogon virginicus L., and the timing of spring and fall flights from and to overwintering sites in a northeastern Mississippi environment during a three year period. Adults were found to over winter in many sites on the study area. High numbers of chinch bugs were found to congregate in bromesedge plants along roadsides or within cut-over woodland. Adults began to move into bromesedge for overwintering in September, but the largest increase occurred in October. Winter mortality from December to the end of February was slight probably because of mild winters during the three year study. Adult numbers in bromesedge began to decline in March as insects began to leave the overwintering site, and the rate of evacuation increased rapidly as temperatures warmed in April. Significant negative correlations were found to exist between the decline in numbers of chinch bugs in bromesedge and spring daily average and maximum temperatures. Fall and spring flight to and from overwintering sites based on captures of adults on aerial traps were found to be in general agreement with the timing of adult increase and decline on bromesedge.

    Field evaluations were conducted to determine the efficacy of Orius strigicollis for biological control of Thrips palmi with different initial density in plastic houses. O. strigicollis released three times after 0, 5, 30, 100 thrips were inoculated per 30 cucumber plants. Three hundred and sixty predators were released in each plot. After inoculation of 5 T. palmi per 30 plants in each plot in plastic houses, T. palmi population increased rapidly with 16.3 individuals per plant in the fourth week, and O. strigicollis could not suppress T. palmi population because O. strigicollis population did not build up quickly. In the plot of 30 thrips inoculation, the density of O. strigicollis increased to 2.1 individuals per plant in the third week and 9.8 individuals per plant in the sixth week. The density of T. palmi increased to 33.8 individuals per plant in the sixth week. In the 100 thrips inoculation plot, the density of O. strigicollis increased to 9 individuals per plant in sixth week, which was similar to that in the 30 thrips inoculation plot. But the density of T. palmi increased rapidly from 2.9 to 384.7 individuals per plant in the sixth week. So, control of T. palmi by O. strigicollis did not appear. In autumn culture, in the 5 thrips inoculation plot, the density of O. strigicollis was so low that it could not suppress thrips density. In the 100 thrips inoculation plot, the density of T. palmi was so high that O. strigicollis could not suppress T. palmi density. In the 30 thrips inoculation plot, the density of O. strigicollis was 4.8 individuals per plant in the sixth week and the thrips population was suppressed. But O. strigicollis could not suppress the thrips population after sixth week because of low temperature and short photoperiod. These results indicate that control of T. palmi using O. strigicollis may be possible on cucumber in the spring culture.
