    Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) were measured in sediment samples from 19 stations in the coastal areas of Korea from February to July 2000. PCDDs and PCDFs were detected in all sediment samples. The concentrations of these con­taminants ranged from 18.2 to 804.0 pg/g dry weight and I-TEQ concentrations varied from 0.1 to 5.5 pg/g dry weight. Examination of homologue groups showed that octachlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (OCDD) was predominant congener in Korean coast. This pattern was similar to homologue profiles of marine sediments in which the main source of PCDDs/DFs was derived from the atmospheric deposition of particulate matters generated from various industrial activities. Grain size and total organic carbon (TOC) distribution are one of the important factors governing PCDDs/DFs concentration in this study.

    Eight chlorobenzenes (out of a total of 12 in the congener series) were measured in the sediments from 21 stations in the southeastern coastal areas of Korea. The levels of total chlorobenzene isomers varied between 2.08 and 12.45 ng/g dry weight. The highest contents of total chlorobenzenes (CBs) were found in the sediments from Pohang coast. Trichloro­benzenes (the sum of 1,3,5-, 1,2,4- and 1,2,3-trichlorobenzene) were dominant classes among four congeners, whereas tetrachlorobenzenes (the sum of 1,2,3,5-, 1,2,4,5- and 1,2,3,4-tetra­chlorobenzene) and pentachlorobenzene were low levels. The contributions of total CBs showed similar patterns for all stations with positive significant correlation within CBs species. It means that CBs contamination in the southeastern coasts of Korea came from the similar source.

    For the first time the concentrations of copper, zinc, lead, cadmium and crome in the tissues from 17 specimens of cetaceans of Korean coast were determined. The measured concentrations of trace elements were considerably lower than the concentrations previously reported in cetaceans. In inter-species, Cd levels were higher in the kidney of Stejneger's beaked whales and the stomach, liver and lung of Risso's dolphin than in the tissues of minke whale and humpback whale.

    To examine the production of steroids with potential oocyte maturation-inducing activity in the spotted flounder, Verasper variegatus, we have incubated post-vitellogenic oocytes (0.82­0.95mm in diameters) with radiolabeled pregnenolone and $17\alpha-hydroxyprogesterone$ . The resulting metabolites were analyzed by thin layer chromatography (TLC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The two main metabolites (progestogens) found in both incubations co-migrated with $17\alpha-hydroxy$ , $20\alpha-dihydroprogesterone$ $(17\alpha, 20\alpha OHP)$ and $17\alpha-hydroxy,\;$20\beta-dihydroprogesterone$ (17 a20{30HP). Additional chromatography by HPLC and TLC confirmed the presence of radioactive $17\alpha, 20\alpha OHP$ and a large amount of unknown metabolite. The present study did not reveal in vitro formation of $l7\alpha 20\beta OHP$ . Although 1 $l7\alpha 20\beta OHP$ was found in a small amount, the synthesis of this steroid suggests that it may play a role in regulating the oocyte maturation process in the spotted flounder.

    This study is to investigate biochemical compositions of two species of marine microalgae, Chlorella ellipsoidea of Chlorophyta and Tetraselmis suecica of Prasinophyta, and to assess their potential antimicrobial activities. Crude protein, lipid and carbohydrate for C. ellipsoidea were $43.15\%$ , $12.63\%$ and $13.09\%$ , respectively, and those for T. suecica were $44.95\%$ , $4.80\%$ and $24.05\%$ , respectively. The major amino acids of the two micro algae were aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine, alanine, valine, leucine, lysine and proline, and no significant difference between the amino acid compositions of both micro algae was observed. The major sugars for both microalgae were glucose, galactose and mannose, and glucose contents showed the highest level, $58.70\%$ for C. ellipsoidea and $57.86\%$ for T. suecica. The major mineral contents of both micro algae for 100g were Ca (3,114mg in C. ellipoidea and 3,389mg in T. suecica) and followed by Na (2,881mg), K (548mg) and Mg (545mg) for C. ellipsoidea and Na (1,832 mg), Mg (1,510mg) and K (548mg) for T. suecica. In the content of ATP-related compound, hypoxanthine in C. ellipsoidea and IMP in T. suecica were absolutely dominant compounds. The highest content of fatty acid in C. ellipsoidea was 20:4, $27.15\%$ and that in T. suecica was 18:3 (w-6), $18.10\%$ . In case of physiologically important polyunsaturated fatty acids like eicosapentaenoic acid (20: 5) and docosahexaenoic acid (22: 6), both microalgae possessed just trace amounts but was rich in arachidonic acid (20: 4). Vitamin content in both microalgae was significantly high in choline and inositol. In antimicrobial activity by water- and fat-soluble fraction of the micro algae, hexane extract in the fat-soluble fraction of C. elliposidea inhibited the growth of Bacillus subtilis by $96\%$ bactericidal activity and tetrachlorocarbon extract of T. suecica indicated relatively excellent antimicrobial activity $(81\%\;bactericidal\;activity)$ against Escherichia coli. Hot water extract among water-soluble fraction of both micro algae almost suppressed the growth of Staphylococcus aureus by $96\%$ bactericidal activity.

    Multimeric angiotensin-converting-enzyme-inhibitor (ACE}) containing a trypsin cleavable linker peptide between ACEI was constructed. We made synthetic DNA coding for the ACEI peptide with asymmetric and complementary cohesive ends of linker nucleotides. A tandemly repeated DNA cassette for the expression of concatameric short peptide multimers was constructed by ligating the basic units. The resultant multimeric peptide expressed as soluble and trypsin treated peptide was shown at the same retention time with chemically synthetic ACEI by HPLC. The present results showed that the technique developed for the production of the ACEI multimers with trypsin cleavable linker peptides can be generally applicable to the production of short peptide.

    To examine effects of cadmium on the respiratory burst of kidney phagocytes and antioxidant defense in liver, juvenile red seabream Pagrus major were fed a cadmium-incorporated diet $(1g\;CdC1_2/kg\;diet)$ . The respiratory burst activity measured by chemiluminescence (CL) was significantly reduced by oral intake of cadmium. Lipid peroxidation in liver expressed as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) was significantly higher in the fish fed a cadmium-incorporated diet than that of the fish fed a control diet both on Day 3 and Day 9. Liver Glutathione S-transferase (GST) activitiy was significantly increased both on Day 3 and Day 9 by feeding a cadmium-incorporated diet, when compared with the controls. From the present results, it can be concluded that oral intake of cadmium in red seabream is associated with marked reduction of respiratory burst capacity of kidney phagocytes which can elevate susceptibility of fish against infecting pathogens. Cadmium administration also elicits significant increment of lipid peroxidation in liver, and fish try to detoxify cadmium by increasing GST activity.

    Morphological features of the two Korean Acrosorium species, A. flabellatum Yamada and A. venulosum (Zanardini) Kylin (Delesseriaceae, Rhodophyta) are described based on specimens collected from several localities along the coasts of Korea. Acrosorium flabellatum is easily distinguished from other Acrosorium species in lacking rhizoids in branchlets for attachment to substratum. The flabellate branching is also characteristic for this species. By contrast, Acrosorium venulosum is distinct from others in having the unique hooked branchlets. Taxonomic features found in the Korean Acrosorium species are compared, and a key to the species is provided based on this and previous data.
