    Abstract A good deal of information regarding the synthesis and opto–electro-structural properties of thin films of lead chalcogenides have been revealed. The development of laser technology had opened up new application for narrow gap lead salts and their alloys. The polycrystalline thin films were deposited onto optically plane and chemically clean glass substrates by vacuum evaporation technique. The films were thin, uniform, smooth and tightly adherent to the substrates.Optical absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction technique and current–voltage characteristics method were used to characterize the films. The absorption coefficients and optical band gaps of films were determined by using FTIR spectrophotometer. The nature of sample, crystal structure and lattice parameters of films were found from X-ray diffractograms. The dc conductivities and activation energies of films were measured in temperature range 300–380K. Schottky junctions of PbS, PbSe and PbTe with indium metal were made. The barrier heights and ideality factors of these metal–semiconductor junctions were determined by using I – V characteristics.

    Abstract Nonlinear wave propagation effects on a resonant tunnel diode nonlinear transmission line are considered. It is shown by computer experiments that this line can be used for short electrical pulses generation as pairs kink–antikink structures, as well as millimeter wave oscillator.

    Abstract Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films filled with various mass fractions of FeCl 3 were prepared using a casting method. The structural, electrical and magnetic properties were clarified. The filling level (FL) dependence of certain IR absorption peaks was correlated with the obtained physical parameter characterizing the other properties. The XRD scans revealed a semicrystalline feature of the virgin polymer and an existence of two halos. The FL dependence of the intensity of the two halos was studied. The dc electrical resistivity was measured in the temperature range of 300–400K. An intrachain one-dimensional interpolaron hopping mechanism was assumed to interpret the electrical conduction. The temperature dependence of the dc magnetic susceptibility exhibited a Curie–Weiss behavior in the range of 90–270K. The ESR studies of PVA filled with various mass fractions of FeCl 3 revealed very complicated spectra due to hyperfine and fine structure. The evolution of the ESR spectra with the FL suggested the distribution of Fe 3+ ions in isolated and then aggregated modes within the PVA matrix.

    Abstract Measurements of the d.c. electrical conductivity on thermally treated polypyrrole/polyaniline (PPy/PANI) samples, in which the PPy content increased by 10% w.w. starting from pure PANI to pure PPy, followed a σ ( t , T )= σ 0 ( t )exp[−( T 0 / T ) 1/2 ] law. This is consistent with a heterogeneous structure of the granular metal type, in which aging is accompanied by the shrinking of the conductive grains causing the decrease of the sample conductivity, a process which is described by the increase of the parameter T 0 . The preexponential factor σ 0 ( t ) depends on the intrinsic conductivity of the grains and geometrical factors affecting the carrier paths through the energy barriers, as are the grain size distribution and the mean volume occupied by the conducting grains in the material. It was found that for the samples as a whole the thermal aging law, which predicts ln σ ( t , T )∝ t 1/2 is followed for a given temperature T , where t is the time of the thermal treatment, in accordance with a granular metal type structure. On the other hand, the preexponential factor σ 0 ( t ) decreases with the aging, following a different law [ σ ( t = 0, T )− σ ( t , T )]/ σ ( t = 0, T )∝ t 1/2 , where σ ( t = 0, T ) is the initial value of σ 0 ( t ), that of the fresh sample. This law reveals an aging caused by a degradation proceeding into the interior of the grains in a diffusion-like manner. So, the two different laws of aging, one from T 0 and the other from σ 0 , reveal that the aging does not simply reduce the size of the grains, but affects their interior, this degradation decreases with depth.

    Abstract The optical constants (absorption coefficient, refractive index, extention coefficient, real and imaginary part of dielectric constant) have been studied for a-Se 80 Te 20− x Pb x (where x = 0,2,6,10) thin films as a function of photon energy in the wave length range (500–1000nm). It has been found that the optical band gap increases while the refractive index and the extinction coefficient ( k ) decreases on incorporation of lead in Se–Te system. The value of absorption coefficient ( α ) and the extinction coefficient ( k ) increases, while the value of refractive index ( n ) decreases with incident photon energy. The results are interpreted in terms of the change in concentration of localized states due to the shift in fermi level.

    Abstract The dielectric parameters in the frequency range 50Hz to 1MHz have been measured in a SmC* liquid crystal mixture in planar alignment. The relaxation frequency ( f r ), distribution parameter ( α ) and dielectric strength ( δε ) have been evaluated and their corresponding values were found to be 206.62Hz, 0.06 and 114.6 respectively. The Goldstone mode, domain mode, soft mode and a new relaxation mode have been observed.

    Abstract Dynamics of an electron beam in a helical coaxial wiggler is studied. It is observed that the electrons perform betatron oscillation in a potential well that reflects the effective radiation pressure of the wiggler field and a centrifugal force due to an average azimuthal drift.

    Abstract This paper reports the effect of surface topography of titanium dioxide films on short-circuit current density of photoelectrochemical solar cell of ITO/TiO 2 /PVC-LiCLO 4 /graphite. The films were deposited onto ITO-covered glass substrate by screen-printing technique. The films were tempered at 300°C, 350°C, 400°C, 450°C and 500°C for 30min to burn out the organic parts and to achieve the films with porous structure. The surface roughness of the films were studied using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Current–voltage relationship of the devices were characterized in dark at room temperature and under illumination of 100mWcm −2 light from tungsten halogen lamp at 50°C. The device utilising the TiO 2 film annealed at 400°C produces the highest short-circuit current density and open-circuit voltage as it posses the smoothest surface topography with the electrolyte. The short-circuit current density and open-circuit voltage of the devices increase with the decreasing grain size of the TiO 2 films. The short-circuit current density and open-circuit voltage are 0.6μA/cm 2 and 109mV respectively.

    Abstract Electromagnetic interference is pollution generated due to dense nature of circuitry in electronic devices and is required to be control at its source. Polyaniline is an environmentally stable conducting polymer which can be cast as thin film, which can replace the corrosive metals as a shield for the control of electromagnetic radiations. In this communication we discuss our results on the preparation of flexible freestanding conducting polyaniline film of varied thickness using either p -toluenesulphonic acid (PTSA) or camphor-10-sulphonic acid as a primary dopant and 4-chloro-3-methyl phenol (CMC) as a secondary dopant. The resulting films were characterized by conductivity, scanning electron micrograph and shielding effectiveness measurements (SE). The SE measurements were carried out using co-axial transmission line method in the frequency range of 0.1–1000MHz. We noticed that only the change of 2% in the shielding effectiveness of these films over the period of 3 years indicating the environmental stability of polyaniline films.
