    The modification of perfluorinated proton exchange membranes (e.g. Nafion) utilizing a layer by layer (LbL) electrostatic assembly of oppositely charged biophilic polymers such as poly-l-lysine as positive layer and dsDNA as a negative layer is developed to protect the interface between the catalyst layer and the membrane in a low temperature fuel cell. Various physicochemical measurements including water uptake, proton conductivity and surface tension were investigated for both the as-received Nafion and the biopolymeric LbL modified Nafion. The smaller water contact angle and the less swelling characteristics of the biopolymer modified Nafion membrane was founded compared to that of as-received Nafion. This clearly indicates that the more hydrophilic surface of biopolymeric layers on Nafion plays an important role in the enhanced dimensional stability. In addition, a potential hypothesis explaining the higher proton conductivity from the LbL biopolymeric film coated Nafion is suggested.

    We report a comprehensive study on relaxor-like characteristics exhibited by (l00) oriented 0.5Ba(Zr 0.2 Ti 0.8 )O 3 -0.5(Ba 0.7 Ca 0.3 )TiO 3 thin film grown on LaNiO 3 coated Si substrate by pulsed laser deposition. The diffuseness coefficient value close to 2 and excellent fit of Vogel-Fulcher curve to the experimental data, suggest its relaxor characteristics. The 'butterfly' shaped dc field dependence of permittivity and evolution of P-E hysteresis loop, at different temperatures, clearly indicate the occurrence of polar nanoregions in this material. The high tunability n r ∼ 70 and low temperature coefficient TCC = 5.18 x 10 -4 K -1 show that the BCZT50 ceramics could be a promising candidate for tunable capacitor applications.

    We fabricated GaAs-based spin-LED (light emitting diode) structures using half-metallic Fe 3 O 4 as spin injectors and measured the circular polarization of the electroluminescence (EL). The circular polarization of the EL due to the spin injection was improved by the low temperature growth of the ferromagnetic layer, compared to the room temperature growth. We also studied the excitation wavelength dependence of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra and the variation of the EL spectra with increasing current. The excess carrier dependence of the EL peaks was found to be different from that of the PL peaks, which was explained by the carrier injection into the buffer layer.

    In this work, boron doped multi-walled carbon nanotubes (BMWNTs) were introduced as a Pt catalyst support due to their unique physicochemical properties. The effect of BMWNTs on methanol oxidation was investigated with different Pt loading contents. The surface and structural properties of the modified MWNT supports were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The Pt loading contents in the catalysts were confirmed by inductive coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) and the morphological structures of the catalysts were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The electrocatalytic activity of Pt/MWNTs was investigated by cyclic voltammetry measurement. As a result, the boron oxide vapor reacted with MWNTS to form BMWNTs, which led to enhancing the properties, such as graphitization and electrochemical behaviors. Moreover, Pt deposited on BMWNTs exhibited better electrocatalytic activity than on MWNTs for methanol oxidation. Consequently, it was found that partial boron doped MWNTs could influence on the properties of the MWNTs, resulting in enhancing the electrocatalytic activity of the catalysts for DMFCs.

    Generation of strong THz waves is a very important and difficult research issue. We performed particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation studies to investigate the possibility of powerful THz generation and spectrum controllability by using a laser-driven plasma wave. Our results show that it is possible to produce spectrum-controllable high-power (>1 MV/cm) THz waves by manipulating the plasma density profiles. This method may provide a good way for coherent high-power THz radiation sources, of which the spectrum ranges from a narrow bandwidth to a wide bandwidth.

    The electronic and the structural properties of n-GaAs layers grown on rough surface of silicon substrate by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) has been investigated by photoluminescence (PL), time resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) and high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD). The relationship between electronic and structural properties of the n-GaAs layer was checked, showing that the defect density is a strong cause for trapping the minority carriers. The impact of introducing intermediate rough silicon layer between silicon substrate and n-GaAs layer on the electronic properties was observed, showing that the structure grown on rough Si involves higher lifetime than those developed on flat silicon substrate. Such structure could be used for economic solar cells fabrication.

    Black and gray microarc oxidation (MAO) coatings were prepared in a phosphate electrolyte with and without K 2 TiF 6 on 2A70 aluminum alloy, respectively. Voltage-time curves were recorded during the MAO process. The effects of K 2 TiF 6 on the morphology, composition, abrasive resistance and corrosion resistance of MAO coatings were investigated. The results showed that the MAO coating produced in the electrolyte with K 2 TiF 6 was thicker, and more uniform than that produced in the electrolyte without K 2 TiF 6 . Ti was detected in the surface of the MAO coating formed in the electrolyte with K 2 TiF 6 . The results of abrasive resistance and corrosion resistance showed that the MAO coating formed in the electrolyte with K 2 TiF 6 exhibited better abrasive resistance and corrosion resistance.

    The Ba 0.5 Ca 0.5 TiO 3 (BCT) composition dependent dielectric and structural properties of (1-x)K 0.5 Na 0.5 NbO 3 -xBa 0.5 Ca 0.5 TiO 3 powders were investigated. Room temperature x-ray diffraction revealed the powder structure to transform from orthorhombic to cubic with increasing BCT composition. The frequency dependent dielectric constant measurements revealed a shift in the temperature of the maximum dielectric constant for at frequencies, suggesting that the system exhibits ferroelectric relaxor behavior. The system containing 15% BCT showed the closest calculated Curie-Weiss exponent to 2, which the exponent for a relaxor ferroelectric.

    We report the effects of adsorbates on the Raman spectra of Pb(Zr 0.4 Ti 0.6 )O 3 nanotubes (PZT-NTs). PZT-NTs with adsorbates were prepared by exposing PZT-NTs to air for 1 day. We found that the presence of surface adsorbates can cause an intense and broad Raman background that hinders the observation of the Raman vibrational modes of the PZT-NTs. This background can be suppressed by adjusting the Raman excitation wavelength from 514.5nm to 414.6nm. It can also be removed by post-annealing the PZT-NTs at 500 o C, but it returns readily after re-exposure to air. X-ray photoelectron and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies show that hydroxyl and carbonate groups are adsorbed onto the surfaces of the PZT-NTs during exposure to air. Moreover, dispersive Raman spectra reveal that the background is a tail of a very broad band from 1000 to 4000cm -1 , which corresponds to hydroxyl groups. These results suggest that the main contribution to the Raman background of the PZT-NTs is that of surface hydroxyl groups rather than carbonate groups.
