    Leaves of Crataegus sinaica Boiss, contain the new C-glycosyl flavone $3"',4”'-di-O-acetyl-2“-O-{\alpha}-rhamnosylvitexin$ , together with the hitherto unknown, dihydroflavonol 3-O-xyloside, (2R:3R)-dihydroquercetin- $3-O-{\beta}-xylopyranoside$ . The known compounds (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, vicenin-II, $2"-O-{\alpha}-rhamnosylvitexin$ , and $4"'-O-acetyl-2"-O-{\alpha}-rhamnosylvitexin$ were also characterized. Structures were established by conventional methods of analysis and confirmed by $^1H-,\;^{13}C-NMR$ , and ESI-MS.

    Eurycoma longifolia Jack was evaluated for aphrodisiac property on sexually naive male mice using the electrical copulation cage. Optimum condition was provided for this study and the male mice were treated with 500 mg/kg of either chloroform, methanol, water or n-butanol fractions from E. longifolia Jack. However, the mice in the yohimbine and control groups received 30 mg/kg and 3 ml/kg of yohimbine and normal saline respectively. The male mice were then conditioned to seek either an estrous female, sexually vigorous male or no mouse, a measurement of right, wrong or no choice respectively. Besides this, hesitation time which was the time spent before the sexually naive male mice crossed the electrical grid (maintained at 0.12 mA) was also determined. Results showed that E. longifolia Jack possesses aphrodisiac property on the sexually naive male mice as shown by the slow and transient reduction in hesitation time and also a similar manner in the increase in the % of sexually naive male mice scoring right choice throughout the investigation period. Hence, this further supports the folkuse of this plant as aphrodisiac.

    As a part of search for new biologically active constituents from aloe, we have isolated a glycopeptide, called G1G1M1DI2, from the gel(G1) of Aloe vera. Chemical and spectroscopic evidence indicated that G1G1M1DI2 is a glycopeptide. The molecular weight of G1G1M1DI2 was about 5,500 daltons, and the carbohydrate and protein contents were 20.9% and 32.6%, respectively. Periodate oxidation and enzymic degradation gave peptide moiety and carbohydrate moiety, respectively. Carbohydrate moiety is composed of fucose, galactose, glucose and mannose in a molar ratio of 0.5:2.4;48.8:48.3. Peptide moiety is composed of fifteen amino acids, and glutamic acid and glycine were the major componants. The glycopeptide, G1G1M1DI2, stimulated thymidine uptake of SCC 13 cells about 6.5 times the control. This result suggests that this glycopeptide has a skin cell proliferating activity.

    Three grayanane diterpenoids (1-3) were isolated from Pieris formosa. 1 was identified as a new natural product and 2 and 3 as known grayanoside C and grayanotoxin XVIII on the basis of spectral analysis.

    The new assay method was developed by using young chicks instead of frogs for screening of anti-emetic compounds from natural sources. Comparing with our previous method using leopard and ranid frogs, the advantages of the new method were not only completely parallel results but also decreasing standard errors. Hinesol and eudesmol were isolated from MeOH extract of Atractylodes lancea rhizome as the anti-emetic principles.

    Chemical investigation on a sample of the needles of Himalayan Taxus baccata has resulted in the isolation of several taxoids including taxol (1) 10-deacetyl-baccatin III (2) and 2-deacetoxytaxinine J (3) along with different lignans (6 and 7) and simple phenolics (8, 9, 10, 11 and 12). The occurrence of 4-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-butane-2-one and 4-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-trans-but 3-ene-2-one (8) in Taxus species is reported for the first time. The $^{13}C-NMR$ spectral data of two rearranged taxiod constituents, brevifoliol (4) and 13-decinnamoyltaxchinin B (5) are presented. The acid-catalyzed decomposition of taxol has been discussed. The synthesis of other two constituents, rhododendrol (10) and hibalactone (7) has been described.

    초록

    Cassia fistula commonly known as Sundali was selected to evaluate its wound healing potentials based on traditional use and literature references. Methanol extract of C. fistula leaves were examined for its wound healing property in the form of an ointment in two types of wound models in rats: i) Excision wound model and ii) Incision wound model. The ointment of the leaf extract of two different concentrations (5% and 10% w/w ointment of leaves extract in simple ointment base) responded significantly in both models of wounds tested. The results were also comparable to that of standard drug, nitrofurazone in terms of wound contraction ability, epithelisation period, tensile strength and regeneration of tissue at wound area.

    An acid polysaccharide (SFP), was extracted from alga Sargassum fusiforme in hot water, was purified by ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose. The PC, chemical analysis, electrophoresis and IR of SFP indicated that it was a kind of alginate with a mol. wt. of 13,000 and a molar ratio of mannuronic acid to guluronic acid 2.75. Pharmacological tests showed that SFP could prolong the survival duration of mice suffering from ascitic Sarcoma 180 with a rate of life prolongation of 63.44%.

    In folklore medicine Drymaria cordata Willd (Family-Caryophyllaceae) is reported to have laxative and anti-febrile properties along with anti-inflammatory activities. Sikkimis used this plant to treat all these ailments. The anti-inflammatory effect of the methanol extract of D. cordata was investigated against carrageenin, histamine, serotonin, dextran and $PGE_1$ induced rat hind paw oedema. It exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity against all these phlogestic agents except $PGE_1$ in the order of carrageenin > serotonin > histamine. All these effects were compared with standard drug phenylbutazone in both the acute and chronic experimental models in albino rats.
