    Because of the limited fossil resources and the need to avoid emissions and toxic waste the future energy supply will be based on a large portion of renewable energies: wind-, solar-, biomass- and geothermal energy. Focus is on the utilization of wind energy coming from onshore- and offshore-sites. Generating electricity from wind is state of the art and feeding large amounts of wind power into the electrical grid will create some additional problems. Suggestions concerning energy storage will be made and the problem of power quality is discussed.

    Broken rotor bars in induction motors can be detected by monitoring any abnormality of the spectrum amplitudes at certain frequencies in the motor current spectrum. Broken rotor bar fault detection schemes should rely on multiple signatures in order to overcome or reduce the effect of any misinterpretation of the signatures that are obscured by factors such as measurement noises and different load conditions. Multiple Discriminant Analysis (MDA) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) provide appropriate environments to develop such fault detection schemes because of their multi-input processing capabilities. This paper describes two fault detection schemes for broken rotor bar fault detection with multiple signature processing, and demonstrates that multiple signature processing is more efficient than single signature processing.

    Several of the conventional hydraulic systems in an automobile are now being replaced by more reliable and energy efficient electromechanical systems. Developments in the brushless permanent magnet machine and in the power and control electronics are the key factors responsible for this transformation. These applications brought out some performance challenges associated with the brushless machines. This paper will focus on these challenges to be able to use these machines in such applications. In terms of replacing hydraulic systems with electromechanical systems, steering system is leading the way in automobiles. Currently, steering systems using Electro-hydraulically assisted systems and Electrically assisted (Electromechanical) systems are in the market. Though the Electrically assisted power steering has several advantages over other systems, certain performance and cost challenges delayed the penetration of such systems in to the market.

    Electro-chemo-mechanical devices or artificial muscles based on conducting polymers (CP) are presented as bilayers, CP/adhesive polymer, or as triple layers, CP/adhesive polymer/CP. Those soft and wet materials, working in aqueous solutions of a salt, mimic the composition of most organs from animals. Under electrochemical control, so working as new electrical machines, they produce continuous, reverse and elegant bending movements, mimicking those produce by animal muscles. By means of the current a perfect controls of the movement rate is attained giving soft and continuous movements. Muscles able to sense the chemical and mechanical conditions of work or muscle having tactile sense, as will be presented here, are being developed. All of them are founded on the non-stoichiometric nature of the soft and wet materials.

    This paper presents an analysis of the permanent magnet overhang effect for the permanent magnetic actuator. Generally, the overhang is often used to increase the force density in permanent magnet machineries. The overhang is particularly profitable in reducing the volume after increasing the force density per volume when using the overhang effect of the permanent magnet. Therefore, the 3D Equivalent Magnetic Circuit Network Method (3D EMCN) has been used in this paper. According to the plunger position, the flux distribution per overhang length and the holding force are quantitatively compared. Furthermore, an appropriate length of the overhang has been proposed. To confirm the accuracy of the analysis method, the results of 2D FEM and 3D FEM are compared for the basic model.

    This paper presents a design strategy of SPOKE type BLDC motors considering an irreversible demagnetization of a permanent magnet (PM). So the irreversible demagnetization characteristic of the motor is analyzed by rotor structure. The instantaneous currents in either starting or lock rotor condition, which are calculated from the current dynamic analysis, are applied to the analysis of the irreversible demagnetization field by FEM. In irreversible demagnetization analysis by FEM, the variation of residual flux density in PM is analyzed using the non-linearity of magnetic core on B-H plan. The analysis results are compared to several rotor structures and used for optimize the rotor structure.

    A transverse flux, PM-exited linear motor (TFM-LM) with inner mover was designed and built. Its output power density is higher and its weight is lower than those of the conventional PM exited linear synchronous motors (PM LSM). To obtain the maximum thrust force under the given volume, the thrust force density with respect to the ratio of the slot width and the length of pole pitch is analyzed by the 3-dimension finite element method (FEM). Finally, calculated static thrust forces was compared with the experimental values. The calculated and measured performance of the transverse flux, PM-exited linear motor with inner mover revealed great potential for system improvements by reducing the mass of the linear motor. For examples, when this motor was applied to a ropeless elevator, it was possible to increase the power density by more than 400% over the conventional PM-LSM. The results of this study recommend this type of motor for the ropeless elevator or gearless direct linear driving system.

    The life expectancy of a transformer largely depends on the temperature-rise it experiences. If the temperature-rise exceeds limits specified in the design standards, the aging of insulating materials is accelerated and the capability of the cooling medium is deteriorated. Consequently, applicable limits for the temperature-rise are essential in designing the transformer and the coolers, demanding the estimation of the transformer's thermal behavior. In order to analyze the temperature characteristics of the transformer, numerical analysis by way of the commercial CFD code has been carried out, and temperature-rise testing to verify computed results was performed. The results obtained in this study show that there is a good agreement between computed outcomes and experimental outcomes.

    In a permanent magnet brushless dc motor, cogging torque is produced by the magnetic attraction between the rotor mounted permanent magnets and the stator teeth. This always produces a pulsating torque ripple resulting in vibration and acoustic noise, which is detrimental to the motor performance. This paper deals with the analytical prediction of cogging torque and the various cogging torque minimization techniques as applied to a permanent magnet brushless dc motor.

    In the machine tool industry, direct drive linear motor technology is an interesting means to achieve high acceleration, and to increase reliability. This paper analyzes and compares the characteristics of a tubular linear motor with Halbach and radial magnet array, respectively. First, the governing equations are established analytically in terms of the magnetic vector potential and two dimensional cylindrical coordinate systems. Then, we derive magnetic field solutions due to the PMs and the currents. Motor thrust, flux linkage and back emf are also derived. The results are shown to be in good conformity with those obtained from the commonly used finite element method. Finally, control parameters are obtained from analytical solutions.
