    In this paper, a digital implementation of an inverse-model based control scheme is proposed using Generalised Sampling and Hold Functions. The implementation of the controller using this kind of holds allows overcoming the difficulties related to the presence of unstable zeros in the continuous-time model and the usual appearance of unstable discretisation zeros in the discrete model when a ZOH is applied. The Generalised Sampling and Hold Functions allows obtaining a discrete model of the plant with all its zeros stable which allows realizing an exact inverse model of the plant in comparison to the use of a classical ZOH which only allows, in general, an approximate inversion of the plant. The proposed approach is then extended to the adaptive case where the stability and tracking properties of the general scheme are fully proved. Simulation examples showing the scope and application of the method are also presented.

    This paper is concerned with the problem of robust filtering for uncertain 2-D discrete systems in Fornasini-Marchesini second local state-space model with state-varying delays. The parameter uncertainty is assumed to be norm-bounded. A 2-D stable filter is designed to ensure that a prescribed $H{\infty}$ performance level is fulfilled for all admissible uncertainties. A linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach is developed to solve the above problem, and delay-dependent conditions for the solvability are obtained. A illustrative example is provided to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

    Neural Network (NN) models based on autoregressive structures have long been used for nonlinear system identification problems, Their application for on-line implementations, however require them to be trained within a prescribed time span, which is often related to the sampling time of the system. In this paper, we introduce a NN model that is embedded with a dimensionality reduction mechanism in order to reduce the size of the network. The dimensionality reduction is based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and the resulting smaller NN trains faster. The longitudinal and lateral dynamics of a rotary wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is modelled using flight test data. The results of system identification, error statistics and training times are provided to highlight the benefits of the proposed approach for NN based system identification models.

    This paper investigates the problem of proportional-derivative (PD) observer design for descriptor systems. A necessary and sufficient condition for the solvability of this problem is obtained in terms of a linear matrix inequality (LMI). The explicit expression of desired PD observer is also given, which involves solving an LMI. An illustrative example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

    The $L_2-L{\infty}$ filtering problem for continuous-time polytopic uncertain stochastic time-delay systems is investigated. The main purpose is to design a full-order filter guaranteeing a prescribed $L_2-L{\infty}$ attenuation level for the filtering error system. A simple alternative proof is given for an enhanced LMI (linear matrix inequality) representation of $L_2-L{\infty}$ performance. Based on the criterion which keeps Lyapunov matrices out of the products of system dynamic matrices, a sufficient condition for the existence of a robust estimator is formulated in terms of LMIs. The corresponding filter design is cast into a convex optimization problem. A numerical example is employed to demonstrate the feasibility and advantage of the proposed design.

    This paper studies the control of nonlinear Galerkin systems, which are an important class of nonlinear systems that arise in reduced-order modeling of infinite-dimensional systems. A novel approach is proposed in which a linear parameter-varying (LPV) model representing the Galerkin model is built, where the parameter variation is dictated by a specially designed adaptation scheme. The controller design is then carried out on the simpler LPV model, instead of dealing directly with the complicated nonlinear Galerkin system, An automatically scheduled H-infinity controller is designed using the LPV model, and it is proven that this controller will indeed achieve the desired stabilization when applied to the nonlinear Galerkin model. The approach is illustrated with an example on cavity flow control, where the design is seen to produce satisfactory results in suppressing unwanted oscillations.

    In this paper, we present the application of a nonlinear rescaling method for an efficient solution to the constrained optimal control problem in model predictive control. A smooth scaling function is used to transform the constraints to a sequential unconstrained optimization problem. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach with regards to model predictive controller with saturation.

    This paper considers the control problem for networked control systems (NCSs) with unreliable data communication. The unreliable data communication simultaneously exists in both control channel (from controller to actuator) and measurement channel (from sensor to controller) and may cause consecutive packet delays and losses. A new model is established based on all possible consecutive packet delays and losses. The observer-based controller is designed to exponentially stabilize the networked system in the sense of mean square, and also achieve the prescribed $H{\infty}$ disturbance attenuation level. An iterative algorithm is developed to compute the optimal $H{\infty}$ disturbance attenuation and the controller parameters by solving the semi-definite programming problem via interior-point approach. An illustrative example is provided to show the applicability of the proposed method.

    To overcome the extended Kalman Filter (EKF) limitation, the unscented transformation (UT) was developed as a method to propagate mean and covariance information through nonlinear transformation. However, the ordinary UT has both local and global sampling problems. In this paper, non-symmetric unscented transformation (NSUT) is proposed to solve these problems. The sigma point sets of the NSUT are non-symmetrically located with respect to the zeroth sigma point set which is equal to the prior mean. Then, the weights of the sigma points are derived by using some conditions for mean and covariance. The non-symmetric unscented Kalman filter (NSUKF) based on the sigma points and weights of the NSUT are applied to the in-flight alignment (IFA) with a large heading error. With a low cost MEMS IMU, the simulations are can-jed out at an S-type trajectory to analyze the performance of the proposed method.

    This paper deals with providing a surgical robot with awareness of the current surgical stage. The awareness of the surgical stage is the first step toward a natural interaction between a surgeon and a surgical robot, the ultimate goal of which is to help the surgeon perform surgery with a minimum control burden. For this purpose, a surgery task model was defined as a structured form of surgical knowledge, which can be understood by both the surgeon and the robot. The model consists of three components: a surgical procedure model, input information, and an action strategy at each surgical stage. This paper focuses on the awareness of current surgical stages based on the surgical procedure model. The surgical procedure model represents the sequential information of the surgery and it is arranged based on key surgical stages. To implement the surgical procedure model of a cholecystectomy, 21 cases of human cholecystectomies are decomposed into surgical stages and their relations are then analyzed. To deal with uncertainty, interaction functions are introduced to the model. While further experiments are necessary, it was shown that the key stages-based surgical procedure model could estimate the key surgical stages correctly during one case of in vivo porcine cholecystectomy.
