    Among the state-space description of discrete vent systems, the max-plus algebra is known as one of the effective approach. This paper proposes a model predictive control (MPC) design method based on the max-plus algebra. Several studies related to these topics have been done so far under the constraints that system parameters are constant. However, in practical systems such as production systems, it is common and sometimes inevitable that system parameters vary by each event. Therefore, it is of worth to design a new MPC controller taking account of adjustable system parameters. In this paper, we formulate system parameters as adjustable ones, and they are solved by a linear programing method. Since MPC determines optimal control input considering future reference signals, the controller can be more robust and the operation cost can be reduced. Finally, the proposed method is applied to a production system with three machines, and the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through a numerical simulation.

    A more comprehensive analytical framework for examining the relative merits of alternative dispatching process policies for nurseries is developed in this paper. The efficiency of the dispatch process of plants in a nursery is analysed using a vehicle routing model. The problem then involves determining in what order each vehicle should visit its locations. The problem is NP-hard. Several heuristic techniques are used to solve a real life nursery sequencing problem. The results obtained by these heuristic techniques are compared with each other and the current sequencing of orders. The model with some minor alterations can be also used to minimise the dispatching and collecting process in different agricultural plants.

    An operation sequence of parts is one of the most important production factors in the design of cellular manufacturing systems. Many similarity coefficient method (SCM) based approaches have been proposed to solve cell formation problems in the literature. However, most of them do not consider the operation sequence factor. This study presents an operation sequence ratio (OSR) and modifies some existing similarity coefficients using the OSR to solver cell formation problems considering operation sequences. The computational results show that the OSR ratio is useful and robust in solving cell formation problems with operation sequences.

    In this study, we consider infinite supply of raw materials and backlogged demands as given two boundary conditions. And we need not make any specific assumptions about the inter-arrival of external demand and service time distributions. We propose a numeric model and an algorithm in order to compute the first two moments of inter-departure process. Entropy enables us to examine the convergence of this process and to derive measurable relations of this process. Also, lower bound on the variance of inter-departure process plays an important role in proving the existence and uniqueness of an optimal solution for a numeric model and deriving the convergence order of augmented Lagrange multipliers method applied to a numeric model. Through these works, we confirm some structural properties and numeric examples how the validity and applicability of our study.

    The purpose of this paper is to show general steps of developing better measures for the survey questionnaire. The steps introduced can be adopted by researchers in disciplines such as management, psychology, behavioral science, etc. As an exemplary case, the customer-supplier relationship is used to show suggested steps in great detail. Several suggested steps and techniques are selected after carefully reviewing the works of previous researchers such as Churchill (1979), DeVellis (1993), Dunn et al. (1994), Hayes (1994),which are explained in depth in the following sections, are: (1) specify domain of construct, (2) generate sample of items, (3) pilot study, (4) data collection, (5) assess reliability and validity.

    Recently a new multi-attribute analysis method is one of the evident areas of important points in the decision support system analysis. The area of decision support system may be broken into three primary area: idea generation, multi-attribute structured analysis method, and the integration of the results of analysis. This research developed an internet/intranet-based solution builder for a three-step decision support system in the view of 1) brainstorming for the idea generation, 2) analytic hierarchy process as a multi-attribute structured analysis method and 3) aggregating logic model to integrate the results of individual analysis. A computer program is developed and demonstrated in internet/intranet-based decision problem. This solution builder provides decision makers a good tool for remote group decision making.

    In the field of plant maintenance, data that are gathered by sensors on multiple machines are handled and analyzed. Online or pseudo online data handling is required on such fields. When the data occurrence speed exceeds the data handling speed, multiple data should be handled at a time (batch data handling or pseudo online data handling). If l amount of data are received at one time following N amount of data, how to estimate the new parameters effectively is a great concern. A new simplified calculation method, which calculates the N data's weights, is introduced. Numerical examples show that this new method has a fairly god estimation accuracy and the calculation time is less than 1/10 compared with the case when the whole data are re-calculated. Even under the restriction calculation ability in the apparatus is limited, this proposed method makes the failure detection of equipments possible in early stages with a few new coming data. This method would be applicable in many data handling fields.

    In this paper, we propose a constrained optimization model for conjoint analysis (a preference decomposition technique) to improve parameter estimation by restricting the relative importance of the attributes to an extent as decided by the respondents. Quite simply, respondents are asked to provide some pairwise attribute comparisons that are then incorporated as additional constraints in a linear programming model that estimates the partial preference values. This data collection method is typical in the analytic hierarchy process. Results of a simulation study show the new model can improve the predictive accuracy in partial value estimation by ordinal east squares (OLS) regression.

    This paper proposes a new algorithm for estimating ARMA model parameters. In estimating ARMA model parameters, several methods such as generalized least square method, instrumental variable method have been developed. Among these methods, the utilization of a bootstrap type algorithm is known as one of the effective approach for the estimation, but there are cases that it does not converge. Hence, in this paper, making use of a cross correlation function and utilizing the relation of structural a priori knowledge, a new bootstrap algorithm is developed. By introducing theoretical relations, it became possible to remove terms, which is liable to include much noise. Therefore, this leads to robust parameter estimation. It is shown by numerical examples that using this algorithm, all simulation cases converge while only half cases succeeded with the previous one. As for the calculation time, judging from the fact that we got converged solutions, our proposed method is said to be superior as a whole.

    A stochastic process { $A_n$ , n = 1, 2, ...} is an arithmetic process (AP) if there exists some real number, d, so that { $A_n$ + (n-1)d, n =1, 2, ...} is a renewal process (RP). AP is a stochastically monotonic process and can be used for modeling a point process, i.e. point events occurring in a haphazard way in time (or space), especially with a trend. For example, the vents may be failures arising from a deteriorating machine; and such a series of failures id distributed haphazardly along a time continuum. In this paper, we discuss estimation procedures for an AP, similar to those for a geometric process (GP) proposed by Lam (1992). Two statistics are suggested for testing whether a given process is an AP. If this is so, we can estimate the parameters d, ${\mu}_{A1}$ and ${\sigma}^{2}_{A1}$ of the AP based on the techniques of simple linear regression, where ${\mu}_{A1}$ and ${\sigma}^2_{A1}$ are the mean and variance of the first random variable $A_1$ respectively. In this paper, the procedures are, for the most part, discussed in reliability terminology. Of course, the methods are valid in any area of application, in which case they should be interpreted accordingly.
