    In CAD/CAM/CAE courses offered in engineering fields at universities, the development of a structured approach to effectively cover prodigious interdisciplinary knowledge is important. Recently, there has been increasing interest in the development of virtual learning tools to help students or trainees to learn diverse disciplines. Little work has been done in developing such tools for CAD/CAM/CAE topics by integrating an intelligent tutoring system(ITS) and an educational gaming approach. We propose domain knowledge and e-learning models to help an instructor develop pedagogical solutions on either in-class or web-based learning activities. By introducing Bezier curve generation, a pertinent topic in the fundamentals of geometric modeling, this paper demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed prototype in both traditional lecturing and virtual learning environments.

    The Joint Replenishment Problem (JRP) determines lot sizes and schedules replenishment times for products so as to minimize the total costs per unit time. In literature, many solution approaches have been proposed to solve the JRP. In this study, we address our efforts to critically evaluate the search algorithms for the JRP. To do so, we first review the of the JRP, investigate the questionable issues in those algorithms, and scrutinize the reason why they are not able to efficiently solve the optimal solution. Also, we employ an example to verify our critical evaluation to show the questionable issues. To compare the computational performance, we test these search algorithms by random experiments. Based on our experimental results, we conclude that Yao and Lee's(2001) algorithm out-performs van Eijs'(1993) algorithm, Viswanathan's (1996) heuristic and Wildeman et al.'s(1997) Lipschitz-based algorithm.

    Product concept formation is regarded as a key activity in developing a product. It may determine the success level of a new product development (NPD) project. Owing to a large number of possible design alternatives in the early stage of product development, it is critical to formulate design properties as well as design alternatives. Although much research has been attempted to deal with this problem, few of them are able to appropriately make a trade-off between designer's requirements and customer's demands. This work presents a prototype Web-based customer-oriented product concept formation system, which involves customers in formulating design properties and design alternatives. For this purpose, the laddering technique is first adopted to establish a so-called functional attribute hierarchy (FAH). Based on the FAH, different design alternatives can then be generated with a combination of alternative values. Through customer involvement via the Web, the Kohonen association algorithm is subsequently adapted to expedite the selection of preferred design alternatives according to multicultural customer factors. A case study on wood golf club design is provided to illustrate the prototype system.

    Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is employed to bring a human factors engineering perspective to Web design. First, a theoretical framework of quality on Web is proposed. The process quality is the determining factor for information quality and interaction quality, and in turn is the determining factor for the final quality. This research chose the site of the College of Engineering and Technology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as the platform. The design started with a users' voice gathering and analysis. Forty college students were recruited to participate the experiments. The users' voices were collected by individual interviews and structured survey. A detailed analysis was carried out based on the data collected including Kano Model analysis and card sorting analysis. Consequently, a complete QFD matrix - the House of Quality (HOQ) was constructed and a site prototype was built based on the critical design features. Finally, a heuristic evaluation was conducted by comparing the old site and new prototype as the validation tool for the design. Results showed that this QFD method is an effective approach for incorporating users' needs into Web design activities. A further analysis reveals that developer's personal knowledge and own judgment also play a crucial role for the interpretation and implementation of the user needs in design activities.

    This paper deals with the problem of economic safety analysis, from the viewpoints of rigidity against changes in factors from expected values. The paper assumes that each alternative is comprised of a combination of unit variable cost and fixed cost, and that unit price and sales volume are given as income factors. The paper proposes methods for evaluating safety of each alternative against changes in each of these four factors (unit price, sales volume, unit variable cost, and fixed cost), including sensitivity coefficient, breakeven point, and analysis on the profit chart. The paper also proposes a domain comprised of total cost axis and unit cost axis which can facilitate economic profit evaluation and sensitivity analysis among mutually exclusive alternatives.

    Owing to trade imbalance, shipping lines accumulate a large number of unnecessary empty containers in the Middle East, whilst some export ports such as Hong Kong and Japan often face a shortage of empty containers. The purpose of this research is to study dynamic empty container allocation problem to dispatch empty containers from the Middle East to various export ports in the Far East region, and reposition surplus empty containers at any port to shortage ports in anticipation of future demand in subsequent periods. Due to the uncertain data in the global containerization environment, a stochastic programming model is developed. By adjusting penalty parameters, an optimal empty container allocation plans can be determined. A numerical example is used to test the efficacy and robustness of the model. The results show the importance of trade-off between high cost and high risk of potentially under-fulfillment of market demand.

    Long-term exposure to high noise level is a major cause of the occupational hearing loss found in industrial workers. By appropriately rotating workers among different workstations, the workers' daily noise exposures can be reduced. The minimax work assignment problem is intended to find the work assignments for several workers that will minimize the maximum noise exposure that any of the workers will receive. This problem can be viewed as a variation of the minimum-makespan multiprocessor scheduling problem (Pm|-|Cmax) which can be solved by a well-known approximation algorithm called the “longest processing time first (LPT).” In this paper, the modified LPT (M-LPT) swap heuristic is proposed for solving large minimax work assignment problems. After testing on 30 hypothetical problems, the M-LPT swap heuristic is found to be nearly as efficient as the existing genetic algorithm but with much shorter computational time.

    In the growth stage, the target customers quickly change to innovators, early adopters, and early majority as time progresses. Compared with the case of a maturity stage, the range of customers' product preferences is considered wider and their speed of change is faster. In order to follow these changes, organizations must continue to introduce new products strategically to a target market. This research contains two parts, the development of the strategies at the growth stage and the application of the suggested strategies to the current industrial market as an empirical study. The strategies are designed by considering the fitness of the increase of customer preferences and the strategic market positions of each player in the market. Therefore, two factors, "the degree of product variety" and "the degree of product similarity", of each organization are analyzed. After the analysis, the four types of product development strategies at the growth stage are defined by classification based on the strength of each factor. The strategies are Leader strategy, Proactive challenger strategy, Reactive challenger strategy, and Follower strategy. Each strategy defines the effective product positioning and enables identification of a more effective new product development management. In the part of empirical study, the portable MD (MiniDisc) player industry, which is a fast growing audio hardware market in Japan, is selected as an example. The result shows that the suggested strategies can be applied for product development management such as an effective use in selecting product positioning, when an organization develops new products.

    Recently, a new method of optimizing the design of public service facilities considering the locations and service level based on GIS is one of the evident areas of important points in the design of public service facility system. In this study, this research is concerned with the development of decision method of location number of public educational facilities with a minimum student travel distance (with an optimal service level). We have developed a 3-step facility system design based on GIS, multi-attribute decision analysis, and stochastic set-covering method in the view of: 1) optimal decision of school types using analytic hierarchy process as a multi-attribute structured analysis method, 2) finding the optimal number of school and those locations with minimum student travel distance using set-covering problem, and 3) these procedures are shown on GIS-based visual outputs. The computer program is developed and demonstrated to show the computational results. It is known that the proposed method is very effective on a set of test problems of real world.

    We describe a makespan minimization approach to job shop scheduling based on the rescheduling patterns of a human scheduler. A branch and bound algorithm is used to generate active schedules, and a rescheduling procedure is used to estimate the minimum makespan of each partial schedule. Testing of the effectiveness of using the rescheduling procedure as a guide for branching decisions showed that our approach is superior to lower-bound-based decisions.
