    In this paper, we revisit the netting theory for the estimation of the rotational stiffness of sidewall of radial tires and suggest a new sidewall contour for evaluation of the rotational stiffness due to cord tension since the conventional theoretical curve does not fit the real curve in the interval near to a bead point. A new sidewall contour is constructed by combining the conventional curve in the interval near to the tread end and the quadratic curve in the interval near to the bead point. The new sidewall contour makes it possible to represent the real sidewall contour more accurately than the conventional one. The netting analysis using the new sidewall contour yields improved stiffness. We have illustrated the above facts by applying the new sidewall contour to a radial tire of P205/60R15 and have compared its rotational stiffness with an experimental one.

    This study tried to control and monitor computerized numerical controller (CNC) machines anywhere and anytime for machine (mobile) to machine (M2M) application in wired and wireless environment of upcoming ubiquitous manufacturing systems (u-Manufacturing). With a personal digital assistant (PDA) phone, the machine status and machining data of CNC machines can be monitored in wired and wireless environments, including the environments of IMT2000 and Wireless LAN. Moreover, CNC machines can be controlled anywhere and anytime. The concept of the anywhere-anytime controlling and monitoring of a manufacturing system was implemented for u-Manufacturing in this study. In this concept, the communication between the CNC controller and the PDA phone was successfully performed anywhere and anytime for the real-time monitoring and control of CNC machines. In addition, the interface between the CNC controller and the developed application module was implemented by object linking and embedding for process control (OPC) and shared CNC memory. For communication, the design of a server content module within the target CNC was based on a TCP/IP. Furthermore, the client content module within the PDA phone was designed with the aid of embedded c++ programming for mobile communication. For the interface, the monitoring data, such as the machine status, the machine running state, the name of the numerical control (NC) program, the alarm and the position of the stage axes, were acquired in real time from real machines with the aid of the OPC method and by sharing the CNC memory. The control data, such as the start, hold, emergency stop, reserved start and reserved stop, were also applied to the CNC domain of the real machine. CNC machines can therefore be controlled and monitored in real time, anywhere and anytime. Moreover, prompt notification from CNC machines to mobile phones, including cellular phones and PDA phones, can be automatically realized in emergencies.

    The oscillation of a fluid caused by external force, called sloshing, occurs in moving vehicles containing liquid masses, such as trucks, railroad cars, aircraft, and liquid rockets. This sloshing effect could be a severe problem in vehicle stability and control. Therefore, development of efficient and easy method to reduce sloshing effect is positively necessary. In this study, optimization design technique for reduction of the sloshing using evolutionary method is suggested. Two evolutionary methods are employed, respectively, the artificial neural network (ANN) and genetic algorithm (GA). ANN is used for the analysis of sloshing and GA is adopted as optimization algorithm. The considered storage tank for fluid is a rectangular tank. The design variables are width and installation location of the baffle, and sloshing reduction coefficient by baffle is used as an object function in the optimization. As a result of this study, the optimal design for sloshing reduction is presented.

    Much research has been conducted to simulate the hydroplaning phenomenon of tires by using commercial explicit FEM (finite element method) codes such as MSC.Dytran and LS-DYNA. However, it takes a long time to finish such a simulation because its model has a great number of Lagrangian and Eulerian elements, and a contact should be defined between the two different types of elements. The simulation results of the lift force and the contact force are very oscillatory. Thus, in this study a new methodology was proposed for the hydroplaning simulation by using two separate mathematical models. An FDM (finite difference method) code was developed to solve Navier-Stokes and continuity equations and to obtain the pressure distribution around a tire with the inertial and viscous effects of water taken into account. An FE tire model was used to obtain the deformed shape of the tire due to the vertical load and the pressure distribution. The two models were iteratively used until a converged pressure distribution was obtained. Since the converged pressure distribution could not be obtained near or at the contact zone due to very shallow water, an asymptotic method was also proposed to estimate the pressure distribution. This new simulation methodology was applied to a straight-grooved tire, and its hydroplaning speed was finally determined for a water depth of 5 mm, 10 mm, 15 mm and 20 mm. Moreover, a new simulation methodology using LS-DYNA was proposed, and the two methodologies were compared in terms of accuracy and efficiency.

    Design optimization of an automobile body for dynamic stiffness improvement is presented. The thicknesses of plates consisting of a monocoque body of an automobile are employed as design variables for optimization whose objective is to increase the first torsional and bending natural frequencies. By allotting one design variable to each plate of the body, compared to previous works based on element-wise design variables, the design space of optimization can be reduced to a large extent. Because the present optimization is based on continuous-variable-based algorithms, considering manufacturability of the optimized result, the converged values of plate thicknesses should be approximated to commercially available discrete values. A new straightforward thickness discretization scheme considering design sensitivities and employing a subsequent reduced optimization problem is proposed. The validity of the proposed thickness discretization scheme is verified through numerical experiments.

    Linear motion (LM) guides supported by rolling elements can be used to ultra-accurately position precision machines. For accurate positioning, the micro and macro dynamic behavior of the LM guide must be understood, but the research on this subject is rather limited. In this investigation, experiments to reveal the dynamic characteristics of the LM guide were performed and a simplified model to predict the observed dynamics of the LM guide was developed. Several experiments conducted in the present research demonstrated the hysteretic behavior as well as frequency-and force-dependent phenomena of the LM guide. The validity of the proposed modeling method was checked with theoretical and numerical analyses.

    This paper presents a novel adaptive reference governor for robust tracking control in constrained linear systems with bounded disturbances. The proposed reference governor achieves a performance improvement over the existing reference governors by virtue of its added feature: adaptability. The design of such an adaptive reference governor involves a nonlinear non-deterministic polynomial time (NP)-hard optimization problem because the solution of the optimization problem must be searched for the infinite number of sequences of disturbance. The SDP relaxation method turns out to allow the nonlinear NP-hard problem to be recast into an SDP, which may be readily solved in polynomial time.

    A robotic system which consists of a precision manipulator and a micro gripper for a micro system assembly is presented. The developed P-R-R type 3 DOF robot is actuated by newly proposed modular revolute and prismatic actuators. As an end-effector of this manipulator, a micro gripper is designed and fabricated with MEMS technology, and the displacement of the jaw is up to 142.8 ${\mu}m$ . A real gripping test is conducted to evaluate the robotic system.

    Winding is an integral operation in almost every web handling process, and a center-wound roll is one of the suitable and general schemes in a winding system. However, improper internal stresses within a center-wound roll can cause damage such as buckling, spoking, cinching, etc. Wound roll quality and performance are known to be related to the distribution of in-roll stresses. It is therefore necessary to analyze the relationship between taper tension in the winding section and internal stress distribution within the center-wound roll to prevent winding failure. But it is hard to compensate for an undesirable winding roll shape such as starring, buckling, and telescoping. This is because the winding section is the final process in a roll to roll system and has no feedback control system to correct winding roll shape directly. A time varying tension profile and accurate control of it in a winding section is one way to shape the fail-safe in-roll stress distribution of a winding roll. In this study, a new taper tension profile making method is aimed for designing high quality wound rolls. A new method to determine the proper taper tension profile was designed by analyzing the winding mechanism which includes the stress model in center-wound rolls, nip induced tension model, relationship between taper tension profile and telescoping, relationship between taper tension type and internal stress distribution. An auto taper tension profile making method was proposed not only to optimize radial stress distribution but also to minimize lateral error (telescoping). Simulation results show that the proposed method is very useful for determining the desirable taper tension profile during the winding process and preventing defects of winding roll shape such as telescoping, starting, and dishing and so on.
