    A sub-domain scheme combined with a reduced system is proposed for non-matched interface problems. A two-level condensation scheme (TLCS) is employed for the selection of primary degrees of freedom of each sub-domain. The degrees of freedom of each domain are divided into primary, secondary and interface degrees of freedom. After the reduced system is constructed in sub-domain-level, the penalty frame method, which utilizes a conventional FEM solver, is employed for assembling non-matched subdomains. The present method can construct the reduced system of each domain without coupling with adjacent subdomains. Thus it is remarkably efficient in computation time and does not require a full memory of global system. Numerical examples demonstrate that the proposed method saves computational cost effectively and provides a reduced system which predicts the accurate eigenvalues of global system.

    Polynomial regression (PR) and kriging are standard meta-model techniques used for approximate optimization (AO). Support vector regression (SVR) is a new meta-model technique with higher accuracy and a lower standard deviation than existing techniques. In this paper, we propose a sequential approximate optimization (SAO) method using SVR. Inherited latin hypercube design (ILHD) is used as the design of experiment (DOE), and the trust region algorithm is used as the model management technique, both adopted to increase efficiency in problem solving. We demonstrate the superior accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method by solving three mathematical problems and two engineering design problems. We also compare the proposed method with other meta-models such as kriging, radial basis function (RBF), and polynomial regression.

    In this study, a polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) film layer for micro thermoelectric generators (TEGs) was optimized by using Taguchi methods. An experimental plan using an orthogonal array $L_9\;(3^4)$ is described. The fabrication process of the thermoelectric poly-Si films layer is presented in detail. The P-type poly-Si films were fabricated on a tetra ethoxy silane (TEOS) layer with a supporting Si wafer. The thermoelectric properties, Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity were measured, including the transport properties such as the hall coefficient, hall mobility and carrier concentration. The design parameters were optimized based on the experimental results. Using the optimum values, a p-type poly-Si films layer was fabricated and its power factor was measured. The measured power factor was $541\;{\mu}Wm^{-1}K^{-2}$ , which was better than the predicted value of $221\;{\mu}Wm^{-1}K^{-2}$ .

    A volume integral equation method (VIEM) is applied for the effective analysis of elastic wave scattering problems in unbounded solids containing isotropic or anisotropic inclusions. It should be noted that this newly developed numerical method does not require Green's function for anisotropic inclusions to solve this class of problems since only Green's function for the unbounded isotropic matrix is involved in their formulation for the analysis. Through the analysis of plane wave scattering problems in unbounded isotropic matrix with isotropic or anisotropic inclusions, it will be established that this new method is very accurate and effective for solving plane wave scattering problems in unbounded solids containing isotropic or anisotropic inclusions.

    Aluminum sheet ingots go through the hot rolling process to be converted into coils with a gauge suitable for the cold rolling process or plates. The top spindle, end coupling and slipper metal are main components of the hot roll process and used for transmission of rotational power with heavy-duty load. The top spindle connected to the motor and end coupling connected to the roller are combined with the slipper metal which acts as a bearing and joint. The contact surface between end coupling and slipper metal is subjected to stress concentration, and life cycles of slipper metal is reduced. This study aims to minimize the mechanical problems which might happen in the production process. The load condition for hot rolling processes is derived under load condition that is conducted for a hot rolling process under slipper metal combination types and operation situations. A structural analysis is performed by applying mechanical characteristics, combination type, and rotational boundary condition of top spindle, end coupling and slipper metal. Optimal design is performed for contact surface between end coupling and slipper metal. Interference analysis is studied to reduce the stress concentrations. Kinematics simulation is performed by applying the various combination type and dynamic boundary condition of the mill spindle assembly. The interference does not occur on the top spindle and slipper metal, so actual driving of the hot mill spindle assembly can operate in the normal operation condition.

    A magnetostrictive sensor is proposed that can selectively measure the specified mode among two kinds of elastic waves transmitted through a ferromagnetic shaft, and its various characteristics are examined by experiments. The magnetic circuit of the proposed sensor is configured by using permanent magnets and its mode selection is accomplished by only reversing the poles of the permanent magnets. By means of finite element analysis, the validity of the proposed sensor is verified. Prototype sensors are made and their sensitivity and linearity are investigated as basic characteristics. The results show the proposed sensors are able to measure the target mode waves with good sensitivity and linearity. By exciting undesirable modes of waves intentionally, it is verified that the sensor can measure the target modes and reject the undesirable wave modes considerably.

    An accelerated substructuring reduction procedure for the iterated improved reduced system (IIRS) method is proposed. The iterated IIRS method can be combined with a substructuring scheme to provide an efficient methodology for large-scale eigenvalue problems. Not only can it reduce eigenvalue analysis errors through successive iterations, but the accuracy of the eigenanalysis is not sensitive to the selected master degrees of freedom. In practical structural eigenproblems, reducing the number of iterations can save a great deal of computation cost. The present substructuring technique modifies the iterative form of the transformation matrices in each substructure to achieve faster convergence. Applications of the present method to two numerical examples demonstrate that the proposed method can obtain lower eigensolutions of structures more accurately and efficiently, as compared with those of the current substructuring technique.

    In cyclic structural systems, small property irregularities often cause significant differences in the dynamic responses of their subcomponents, which results in unpredicted premature failures of the systems. The small irregularities and the resulting phenomena are called the mistuning and the vibration localization, respectively. In this paper, the vibration localization phenomena due to mistuned coupling stiffness are investigated. For the investigation, a simple multipendulum system is employed and an optimization method is used to find mistuned coupling stiffness conditions under which maximum vibration localization phenomena occur.

    A multibody approach is suitable for tolerance analysis of mechanical systems since multibody formulation can directly consider part-level tolerance variables. In this study, procedures for performing tolerance analysis and corresponding sensitivity analysis for spatial multibody systems are proposed. First, statistical formulation for performing multibody system tolerance analysis is developed to obtain system level tolerance for given part-level tolerances. One very useful aspect of the proposed formulation is that in the process of computing system tolerance, the sensitivity of system tolerance with respect to part-level tolerances can be additionally obtained. The kinematics of spatial multibody systems has been redefined in terms of both generalized coordinates and part-level tolerance variables. Tolerances in geometry of a body are specified in terms of the variations in relative locations of joint definition points and relative distance between them. Tolerances in the joint kinematics are defined through variations in vector closure equations and orthogonality equations that are two fundamental constraint equations for most kinematic joints. To demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed tolerance analysis procedure, tolerance analysis of a spatial 4-bar mechanism and tolerance optimization are performed.

    Recently, there has been a growing consumer interest in the amount of noise produced by household electrical appliances. The designer of the product must determine the source of the noise, in order to eliminate the source. In the case of a household electric appliance such as the washing machine, the consumer's complaint was about the noise that is generated during the dehydrating condition. However, in the case of the washing machine, it is difficult to identify the noise source when the washing machine uses the dehydrating condition. Several noise sources combine making it difficult to determine the key factor that contributes to the noise output. Multi-Dimensional Spectral Analysis (MDSA) is a method that can remove the correlation between different noise sources, and it expresses the key contributing factor as a unique output. This study utilized MDSA to analyze the contribution of each noise source in the output during the dehydrating condition.
