    In this article, ion-selective nanochannels are numerically studied to investigate the power generation capability of a concentration gradient in conjunction with reverse electrodialysis. The generation of power from the nanochannel when it is placed between two reservoirs containing sodium chloride solutions with different concentrations is investigated. The current-potential characteristics of the nanochannel were calculated by solving the Poisson equation and the Nernst-Planck equation. The effects of engineering parameters on the power generation density are investigated.

    SWNTs were synthesized by laser-vaporized CCVD (catalytic chemical vapor deposition). The diameter distributions and the abundance of SWNTs synthesized at different temperatures and using different catalysts were investigated by Raman spectroscopy. Further, this technique was compared with other synthesis techniques (laser-oven and conventional-alcohol CCVD), and $C_{60}$ was synthesized simultaneously as a byproduct only using the laser-oven technique. With increasing synthesis temperature, the diameter distribution shifted towards larger diameters, and the G/D ratio became larger as the synthesis temperature increased to $1000^{\circ}C$ . Ni, Co, and Fe played a catalytic role, though Fe was less effective under our experimental conditions. The diameter distribution of SWNTs synthesized with the Fe catalyst was shifted to smaller values compared to those synthesized with Ni or Co catalysts.

    The authors demonstrated phosphorescent white organic light-emitting diodes (PHWOLED) with mixed electron transporting layers (M-ETL) using 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (BPhen)/4,4'-bis (carbazol-9-yl)biphenyl (CBP). The M-ETL PHWOLED exhibited the optimum balance of holes and electrons, owing to the low electron mobility of the CBP M-ETL. The optimized PHWOLED showed a peak current efficiency of 16.85 cd/A and a peak external quantum efficiency of 7.32%.

    In order to solve the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) of phonons for investigating heat conduction in non-metallic solids, we propose employing a DSMC (direct simulation Monte Carlo) scheme to simulate the dynamics of phonons analogous to rarefied gas. In contrast to treating the BTE with conventional linear approximation, this scheme requires no relaxation times as input parameters. We can directly investigate couplings among phonons with different modes, although we have to assume an appropriate scattering model for phonon-phonon interactions. In this paper, we describe the DSMC scheme for phonon dynamics and present some results with our prototype codes for a simple solid model. In the first case of single-branch four-phonon processes, we carried out simulations of non-equilibrium thin films with a temperature gradient. We found that the temperature jump at the boundaries can be successfully achieved. For the second case of three phonon processes, we developed a simulation code that takes into consideration the different acoustic branches to evaluate the mode-dependent relaxation time and mean free path. This type of DSMC scheme for phonons enables us to include other relevant factors, such as optical branches and phonon-electron interactions.

    We conducted numerical simulations of heat conduction in one-dimensional (1D) nonlinear lattices to reveal the mechanism of thermal rectification of asymmetrically-defective materials. A decreased spring constant simulates the defective lattice and the obtained temperature profile suggests a thermal resistance existing at the interface of two linked segments with different spring constants. Our numerical results suggest that the thermal rectification of two-segment system is dependent on the spring constant and temperature gradient. Introducing the estimated phonon band, most of the rectification mechanisms are clearly explained and performance limit as a thermal rectifier is found for the defective/pristine materials.

    Honeycomb-patterned polystyrene film is prepared by breath figure method. Pore size with a few hundred nano-meter to several micro-meter diameters is generated by controlling various parameters, such as the polymer concentration, humidity, casting area and solvent. The pore size becomes larger with increasing humidity and temperature difference between air and substrate. Porous film can be formed by drying under high humidity. The density of solvents affect the pore shape and pore depth. Video observation indicates that in the formation process of the porous pattern water droplet condenses gradually on the surface, along with the migration of the droplet formation boundary line from the edge to the center, when the boundary line reaches the center, hexagonally packed porous template is completed.

    Thermal boundary resistance (TBR) at a liquid-solid interface that consists of simple Lennard-Jones atoms is studied by molecular dynamics simulation. A liquid layer is confined narrowly between flat solid surfaces in the simulation, and the mean density of the confined liquid is varied. A thermal gradient is imposed in the system by applying constant heat flux, and TBR is calculated using the temperature-profile results. TBR is highly dependent on the bulk density of liquid when the liquid does not wet well with the solid. The bulk density gives a dominant influence over the liquid-side structure at the interface, which determines TBR in part. In the system of fluid on a high energy solid surface, the wetting system, even when the interfacial structure shows a marked dependence on the density, TBR depends less on the bulk fluid density.

    This study successfully develops a versatile method of producing superhydrophobic surfaces with micro/nano-silica hierarchical structures on glass surfaces. Optically transparent super hydrophobic silica thin films were prepared by spin-coating silica particles suspended in a precursor solution of silane, ethanol, and $H_2O$ with molar ratio of 1:4:4. The resulting super hydrophobic films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical transmission, and contact angle measurements. The glass substrates in this study were modified with different particles: micro-silica particles, nano-silica particles, and hierarchical structures. This study includes SEM micrographs of the modified glass surfaces with hierarchical structures at different magnifications.

    In the average method of modified small parameters, the synchronization of two coupled exciters is converted to a problem on the existence and stability of zero solutions for the average differential equations of small parameters over the average period of two exciters. To implement frequency capture, the torque of frequency capture should be greater than or equal to the absolute value of the difference between the residual electromagnetic torques of the two motors. Because each exciter is involved in the motion of the vibrating system it has excited, its relative moment of inertia is reduced. The reduction is proportional to half its coefficient of cosine effect of phase angles (CCEPA). Because one of the exciters is involved in the motion excited by the other, a coupled moment of inertia exists for the two exciters. The stability of the synchronization of the two exciters is affected by the reduction of their relative moments of inertia and their moment of coupling inertia. For the synchronization to be stable, two conditions must be satisfied: (1) the non-dimensional relative moments of inertia of the two exciters are all greater than zero, and (2) four times the product of their non-dimensional relative moments is greater than the square of the coefficient of coupled cosine effect (CCCPA). The stability of synchronization depends solely on the ratios of the masses of the two exciters to the mass of the vibrating system and the ratio of the distance between one exciter and the centroid of the rigid frame to the equivalent rotating radius of the vibrating system about its centroid of the rigid frame, and is independent of the parameters of the two induction motors.

    Some possible collocation strategies of sensor and actuator pairs for the application to active vibration control systems are analyzed, compared and discussed in this paper. This is becausea well-designed sensor - actuator collocation configuration can provide a simpler control algorithm with excellent performance and stability, especially when velocity feedback is adopted. As an ideal point collocation pair of a sensor and actuator shows high possibility in actual vibration control problems, the advantage of a collocated accelerometer - shaker pair is proven experimentally and discussed first. Then as a similar approach, a collocated piezosensor - piezoactuator pair is analyzed in depth with the in-plane motion coupling. Finally, two configurations of a practically collocated configuration with an accelerometer - piezoactuator pair and a non-overlapped collocated pair of a bimorph piezosensor - two bimorph piezoactuators are described in detail in terms of performance and stability with experimental results. Those two configurations are expected for the applications to more practical active control of vibration systems with the velocity feedback control scheme.
