    초록

    This study was aimed to explore the level of awareness of Korean teachers and college students towards sustainable development(SD) and education for sustainable development(ESD). A survey was conducted to understand the present status of awareness of SD and ESD among 317 college students and 625 teachers in Korea from April to May of 2005. The questionnaire included items asking whether they heard about terms such as sustainability or sustainable development, the source of information on SD, the level of understanding or the urgent task for SD in Korea. It also included questions about experiences in participating in or conducting ESD, the need for ESD, important areas in and the modality for ESD and the willingness to participate in ESD. The results showed that the level of awareness on SD among teachers was low compared to college students, who have a relatively high level of access on SD issues through textbooks and classes in high school. Interestingly, most of college students replied that they never received any ESD, even though they learned SD in class. Both the teacher and student group thought that tile priority of sustainable development should be an 'environment-related' area in the social, economical and environmental perspectives. Most of the students and teachers considered the concept of SD as 'pursuing the balance between environmental protection and economic development.' Some of the teachers recognized the concept of sustainable development in the paradigm of continuous economic development. Both groups responded that the urgent task related to sustainable development is 'environmental protection' and the 'reduction of poverty.' On the other hand, they had experiences in teaching related to natural resources, gender equity, health, human rights, climate changes and other SD issues in class, but not under the name of ESD. They also emphasized 'critical thinking and problem solving & decision-making' in education. Most of the students and teachers responded that it was needed to carry out ESD, and that the way of life for SD would be the priority. It is suggested that various pedagogy and modalities according to various target groups should be considered in providing ESD. It is necessary to use more effective strategies for ESD rather than just introducing the concept of SD. Also, it is needed to review the ESD practices of teachers and improve the quality of education within the scope of ESD.

    초록

    The purpose of this study was to test effect of STS instruction using the subject matter of marine life on middle school students' perception of ocean. The objects of 156 students were sampled from the 1st grade of a middle school and were divided into an experimental group and a control group. 79 students of the control group were treated with traditional instruction, while 77 students of the experimental group were treated with STS instruction materials. All of the students took test of perception of ocean before and after the instructions. The perception of ocean was divided into four categories; value of sea, development of marine resources, research and conservation of sea, and perception of sea-related vocation. The results of the pretest and the posttest indicated that the perception of ocean of the experimental group was statistically significantly higher than that of the control group. Specially in categories of the value of sea and the research and conservation of sea, the scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group.

    초록

    The Ministry of Environment supports environmental education mainly in two ways ; one is by supporting schools engaged in environment conservation model school and the other is by extending grants for experiential environmental education programs. This research aims to evaluate the current status of grant for experiential environmental education programs while proposing possible improvement for constructive and continuing development of the support measures. Grant for experiential environmental education programs is divided into two areas of grant for schools and grant for community-based civil organizations. The diagnosis and evaluation were conducted in terms of 7 areas, such as time, facilities, programs, manpower (professional expertise), operation, administrative and financial support mechanism and others. Research process involved the review of previous studies in 2001 and 2003, comparison of the grant program with other grants in and out of Korea for environment education, and the following areas considered when identifying improvement options: i) Overall review of objectives and operations, ii) expansion supports programs oriented problem solving as well as those focused ecological sensitivity, iii) change from expendable, one-time program to productive, continuous program, iv) link to social changes and issues, v) principles for operation and evaluation, vi) criteria and methods for program selection and evaluation, and vii) improving operation system. Based on review and the overall evaluation on the experiential environmental education program grant, the recommendation for improving operation system were provided, which included stages of passive improvement, active improvement and building infrastructure for environment education, and building capacity of the members related in the initiatives.

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate elementary students' environmental mapping following an environmental literacy degree. For this purpose, 34 elementary students of the 5th grade in Daejeon were used as a sample, and their environmental literacy(EL) by 'environmental literacy inventory(ELI)' was assessed. In the end, the correlation between EL and 'Environmental Mapping' was analyzed. The major findings of this study were as follows: 1) 5th grade elementary school students have a high level of conceptual recognition in regard to environmental issues and problems but they have low level of environmental behavioral function; 2) in the correlational analysis of environmental Mapping assessment and EL degree have significant correlation at p

    초록

    This study was designed to make valuable suggestions for the development of environmental education(EE) teaching materials through teachers' and students' opinions. In the summer of 2005, an opinionnaire was sent to 1,749 secondary school EE teachers and 270 teachers of them answered. One hundred and six middle school students and 196 high school students in Kyunggi area were also participated in this survey. The opinionnaire in this study was based on the six standards, fairness and accuracy, depth, emphasis on skill building, action orientation, instructional soundness, and usability, developed by NAAEE(1998). Most teachers were totally dependent on textbooks in their teaching EE. They evaluated current EE textbooks most positively in the perspective of 'fairness and accuracy', whereas they evaluated them most negatively in the perspective of 'usability'. The problems of EE textbooks were differently recognized by teachers and students. The lack of contents stimulating students' interest was considered as the most serious problem of EE textbooks by students. Simultaneously, it was considered as the least serious problem of EE textbooks by teachers. Both EE teachers and students expect the future EE textbooks would consist of proper contents to reflect EE characteristics.

    초록

    The purpose of this study is to elucidate the concept of the internal value of environmental education (EE), and to present a new concept of 'Inquiry-Based EE' as a method to realize the internal value of EE. Since the introduction of EE, the 'external' value has been overwhelmingly present, as is shown in the commonly expressed purpose of EE. The ultimate goal of EE has been considered as to solve environmental problems through educational approach, which is important, but external value in relation with education. Generally, education has its own value, which may be more important than external value. But in EE area, that idea has not been discussed much. So, this study argued that EE has, or should have, the internal value of education. This study also examined the concept of inquiry, and presented it as two types of inquiry: the scientific inquiry and the 'insightful inquiry', and argued that the insightful inquiry is important as well as scientific inquiry in EE. Then, this study presented a new concept of 'inquiry-based EE', which can be defined as EE that is based on both the scientific and insightful inquiries, and makes the student be able to 'see' the world with the environmental world view. Lastly, this study presented also a new concept of 'Environmental Studies for EE, (ESEE)'. This means that the traditional environmental science is considered to be not well developed under the perspective of EE. From this viewpoint, this study presented the needed contents of the conceptually presented ESEE. In short, this research asserts that 'inquiry-based EE' is needed to make students 'see' the world environmentally, which is the very important value of EE, the internal value of EE, not very much examined. The 'inquiry-base EE' is considered to possibly advance EE as a new paradigm.

    초록

    The purpose of this paper is to analyze media companies' editorial viewpoints regarding environmental issues. Not only do newspaper editorials provide a variety of environmental information, but also they make it possible for the public to form an opinion and to establish communication channels regarding environmental issues. With this in mind, this paper analyzes the changes in environmental reporting over the past two decades. The newspaper companies started writing more frequently about the environment from early 1980s. To show this, I analyzed environmental articles written in the six main news-paper companies: Chosun, Donga, Hangerae, Kyunghyang, Hankook, and Munwha from 1999 to 2004. For this study, the articles have been complied by using the Korean Integrated News Database System (KINDS). Also the data has been sorted according to year, subject, and ty the company of origin. The total number of the environmental articles posted on these six daily newspapers from 1999 to 2004 is 729 and these represent 2.59% of the total articles. Hankook-Ilbo was the company that handled the most of environmental articles followed by Hangerae, Munwha, Kyunghwang, Chosun, and Donga. The major topics of discussion were environmental development and water quality issues. The number of the environmental related articles increased in 1999 and 2000, but then decreased from 2001 to 2003. Again the number increased in 2004. Interestingly while the number of articles covering the environment increased from the 1980s and into the 1990s, the number of articles decreased from 1999 to 2004 as the post-IMF period seems to have suppressed interest in the ecological issues despite the economic growth that followed. With the change in media coverage people have begun to recognize environmental issues as having social impact. As a result the people have begun to take such issues more seriously and take more active role in effecting environmental policy. Thus it is important that the media presents it's stories in an object manner to insure that the public is properly informed.

    This study was conducted to investigate whether attitudes and recognitions of middle and high school students regarding environmental concerns were improved after anuran call monitoring. It was a step toward monitoring local environmental changes with anuran calls. Three-striped pond frogs (Rana nigromaculata), Bullfrogs (R. catesbeiana), and Narrow-mouthed toads (Kaloula borealis) were surveyed to determine local abundance and distribution of them in 12 study sites using their advertising calls. A published booklet, which contains morphological, physiological, ecological, and acoustic information on amphibian species and methods of monitoring anuran calls were provided to monitoring students for identifying the three species. Pretest-posttest were conducted before and after monitoring from 10 April to 28 August in 2005 to determine how the monitoring students changed their attitudes on environmental issues, increased knowledges on amphibians, and improved the understanding on the cause and effect of declining amphibian populations. The amphibian monitoring program was effective to improve the students' attitudes towards conserving environments as well as the students' knowledge on general behavior and ecology of various amphibian species although their understanding about various environmental problems was not. In addition, the program increased the students' understanding on the problems of declining amphibian populations.

    An environmental problem is the important issue of mankind. It should be treated main discourse in our period. There are many assertions related to environment but they are not to be clearly classified because of miscellaneous paradigm. It is possible to classify into two category on the basis of human attitude toward nature and environmental problem. One of them is technocentrism and the other is ecocentrism. This classification is helpful to understand various environmental discourses. Owing to different paradigm approach, technocentrism and ecocentrism have different concept for environmental problem. Environmental problem has relation to logic behind economics. Technocentrism is powerful to the real life in behalf of economic rationalism. So they have a striking contrast. This study made clear the differences between technoentrism and ecocentrism. But ecocentrism is important for the only settlement of environmental problem in ecocentric perspectives.
