    This paper describes a position-control algorithm for the buffer of a deep-sea mining system. The buffer is connected to a surface vessel by means of a long slender pipe on its top and to a collector on sea floor through a flexible hose at the bottom. A mathematical modeling is established for designing the controller for thrusters of the buffer, in which the dynamic response of the long pipe is taken into account. In this paper, the dynamic response is estimated by the mode superposition method and the fluid loading acting on the pipe is computed by using Morisons formula. For simplicity, the reaction from the flexible hose is not included and only the lateral motion is considered. The control algorithm is based on the PID control method. In order to guide the buffer to react only to the low-frequency motion of the surface vessel, the FIR digital filter is introduced. It can be shown numerically that the high-frequency component of ships motion can be successfully filtered out by using the FIR low pass filter.

    Samsung Heavy Industries built and delivered three large high-speed Ro-Ro passenger ferries for Minoan Lines from 2001 to 2002. This paper presents the application method of computational fluid dynamics for hull form optimization and the results of model test and sea trial. In addition to this, the core technology for passenger vessel, i.e., the design concept of general arrangement, interior design, equipment and system design will be described.

    The evaluation of the geodynamic stability of rubble mound breakwater such as sliding and settling requires the information of wave forces acting on the breakwater. In the present study, a numerical method which can be practically used in determining wave forces was presented, and was verified by hydraulic experiments. The strongly nonlinear wave deformation and resulting wave pressures on the frontal slope of the breakwater were calculated by a volume-of-fluid method. The peak values and phases of pressure signal were shown to be linearly dependent on the surf similarity parameter. The results agreed quite well with experimental data, and their experimental formula were proposed. The wave forces were determined by connecting the wave pressure formulas to a boundary element method for calculating the inner wave field of breakwater. It was shown that the calculated wave forces also agreed well with experimental data.

    Songdo Beach is situated in Yeongil Bay on the east coast of Korea. Its bathymetry changes all the time influenced by mostly wave environment. The beach morphology suffered artificial impacts as well as natural impacts since 1967. Three structures were constructed or modified around the beach from 1968 to 1985. The major structure is the P~SCO harbour in the middle of the bay. Just after the storms in 1978 a significant change of the beach profile was reported. The morphological change around the beach was comprehensively investigated including collection of existing and new field data at the beach and Hyungsan River, and the data sets were analysed to describe the morphological changes between 1978 and 2001.

    New chloride diffusion coefficient is proposed in order to estimate the effect of chloride binding and evaporable water on chloride ion penetration in marine concrete structure. A finite element method program developed on the basis of the new diffusion coefficient provides an estimation of chloride concentration according to concrete depth, external and internal conditions, and the predicted chloride concentrations are compared with experimental values. The new diffusion coefficient, which is presented as functions of chloride binding, evaporable water and intrinsic diffusion coefficient, varies greatly according to water-cement ratio. But, curing temperature does not have a significant influence on the ratio of modified diffusion coefficient to intrinsic diffusion coefficient. The FEM program using the modified diffusion coefficient estimates experimental chloride concentrations in a little error range. The numerical analysis for internal and external conditions proposes that the most effective way to reduce chloride ion penetration is to decrease water-cement ratio.

    Hydrodynamic characteristics of a floating pontoon breakwater with triple vertical porous membranes are investigated, within the context of a two-dimensional linear wave-flexible body interaction theory. The vertical-porous-membrane structures are hinged with spacing at the bottom of a floating pontoon and also hinged at some distance from the seabed. The tensions in the membranes are achieved through the net buoyancy force, created by the submerged volume of the pontoon. A floating structure is partially restrained by linear symmetric moorings, placed both fore and aft. The restoring/exciting force and moment calculated by the tip displacements of membranes within the pontoon, has been formulated using appropriate boundary conditions. The BEM program is based on a discrete membrane dynamic model and simple-source (second-kind modified Bessel function) distribution over the four sub-fluid domain boundaries. Since the boundary condition on the membrane is not known in advance, the membrane motions and velocity potentials in each region are solved simultaneously. It is found that a properly moored floating pontoon breakwater, containing long vertical porous membranes, which take a major fraction of the water column, can significantly increase the overall wave blocking efficiency in normal and oblique incident waves, including long wave regions.

    Major characteristics of offshore current power generating rotors are presented. The study is focused on HAT (Horizontal Axis turbine) type generating system. To design rotors, various design principles are applied based on the prototype rotor particulars. To verify the compatibility of the rotor design method and to analyze properties of design factors, three rotor models are designed and fabricated and experimented in circular water channel. The models are designed with various blade numbers and shapes. At incoming current velocities, the rotor rpm, power and efficiency are measured and the properties of rotors are evaluated. The performance of each rotor at various current velocities is analyzed and compared. The results can be effectively applied to the design of current power generation system.

    This paper presents the survey results of a sunken oil tanker, Kyung Shin, which sank in the East Sea near Pohang, Korea in 1988. Despite the underwater operation for sealing the oil-leaking holes at the time of the accident, small-scale oil spills have been frequently reported near the sunken position. To assess the risk, a survey using underwater vehicles was carried out for ten days in 2001. It includes optical inspection and hull plate thickness measuring for assessing its corrosion state. Based on the survey results, it is concluded that there is still a little amount of oil leakage from Kyung Shin while the hull plate of the sunken tanker was not corroded severely yet. Additionally, the environmental conditions in which the spilled oil sticks to the shore are also analyzed.

    In the present study, butyltin compounds in sediment cores were quantitatively determined to study vertical distribution of these compounds along the coast of Korea. Butyltins in sediment core were analyzed to investigate the trend of past organotin contamination in Korea and to estimate the half-life of TBT in sediments. Butyltin compounds were detected from the entire sediment core samples at 14 stations. TBT, and its degradation products, dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT), concentrations ranged 〈1-46100, 〈1-4320 and 〈2-2460 ng Sn/g on a dry weigt basis, respectively. The highest butyltin concentrations were found in front of the repairing shipyard in Ulsan Bay at which total butyltin concentration reached up to 51620 ng Sn/g. Each butyltin compound showed significant correlation among tri-, di- and mono-substituted compounds. Sedimentation rates were estimated based on $^{210}$ Pb activity profiles. The half-lives of TBT in eight undisturbed sediment cores were calculated from the estimated sediment age and TBT concentration profiles. The half-lives for TBT ranged from 1.8 to 9.9 years and the mean value was 4.9 year. Relatively longer half-lives were obtained from cores Ulsan Bay (9.9 yr), Kamak Bay (8.3 yr) and Dangdong Bay (6.3 yr). The half-lives of the other cores were less than 5 yr. Butyltin concentrations were high enough to affect marine organisms near harbor and shipyard, and vertical distribution of butyltin compounds in sediment showed active use of them in Korean peninsula for the past decades. The half-lives of TBT in a year scale provide a concern on persistence of this compound in marine sediment even after world-wide total ban on use of TBT.

    The radiation problem for oscillating bodies on the free surface has been formulated by the over-determined Green integral equation, where the boundary condition on the free surface is satisfied by adopting the Kelvintype Green function and the irregular frequencies are removed by placing additional control points on the free surface surrounded by the body. The B-Spline based higher order panel method is then applied to solve the problem numerically. Because both the body geometry and the potential on the body surface are represented by the B-Splines, that is in polynomials of space parameters, the unknown potential can be determined accurately to the order desired above the constant value. In addition, the potential expressed in B-Spline can be differentiated analytically to get the velocity on the surface without introducing any numerical error. Sample computations are performed for a semi spherical body floating on the free surface for six-degrees of freedom motion. The added mass and damping coefficients are compared with those by the already-validated constant panel method of the same formulation showing strikingly good agreements.
