This paper is to study how Marie de France has differentiated her stories from the traditional romances by analyzing her lai (a short romance), Lanval, in a feminist point of view. Although Lanval is an Arthurian romance, it deals with Arthur and his courtly world in quite a different perspective; rather, it portrays a bleaker side of that “glorious” male-dominant society. In the Prologue of her Lais, Marie herself proclaims that her stories would not follow traditional ones, mostly written by male writers. Marie's romance, in a sense, resembles today's soap operas which usually depict everyday lives of common people, focusing on relatively trivial themes. Lanval is neither about knightly behaviors nor about romantic courtly affairs; it is simply about erotic desire of ordinary humans and about women's power that dismantles the adamant citadel of patriarchy. Arthur, supposedly an ideal king, appears both as a weak king and an uxorious husband. The Knights of the Round Table are also weak and childish―they dislike Lanval just because he is a foreigner and a perfect knight. In this context, it is women's power, for good or ill, that dominates the world of men. Queen Guinevere manages to manipulate Arthur and the legal codes of his ideal court. Lanval's supernatural lady dwarfs the heroic status of Arthur and his knights. She takes their knightliness from them, making them simply booby knights. Also, at the very heart of the story, there is a fatal beauty contest which ridicules the whole system of a so-called ideal society. Like Chaucer's Wife of Bath's Tale, Lanval seems to be a frontal assault on patriarchy, which parodies both the heroic world of Arthur and the genre romance itself. Although the story is quite absurd in the male heroic point of view, it eventually tears the Arthurian world to pieces.

Christian existentialism is the leading existential philosophy which made an influence upon the basic idea of modern American drama. Nicoli Berdyaev, a Christian existentialist, is a major philosopher among the Christian existential philosophers whose thoughts made an influence on the literary thought of American drama. According to his thought, truth is made in subjectivity and man resembling God has a subjective soul and the soul also resembles God. Puritanism is a basic thought of American literature and it had an influence on Albee's dramatic world. Puritanism is based upon presbyterianism and the presbyterianism puts its emphasis on subjectivity and individualism. In this point we can say that it has a relation to Christian existentialism and that the Christian existentialism had an influence upon Albee's dramatic world. In The Zoo Story, Albee's early play, Jerry is trying to make Peter recognize his authentic self. Peter is isolated in his dogmatic world. He cannot find his true self on an existential basis. His alienation is not only from society but also from God. Finally through his own sacrifice Jerry achieves his utmost aim ― a human contact with Peter, opening his isolated mental world. As a result the non-existential barrier covering Peter's mental world is broken by Jerry. At last Jerry leads Peter to his authentic self. Edward Albee protests against the illusion and the dogmatic thought being degenerated from true and authentic belief and idea for God. He tries to make Americans truly recognize themselves through the blame for contemporary American society. In other words, Albee in his plays tries to make the Americans awake from their mistaken idea and identity and also he tries to find their authentic existence on the basis of Christian existentialism.

Morrison proposes in Beloved a solidarity of community as the only viable solution possible for the African American in the white-dominated American society. Beloved historicizes the personal. In doing so, it emphasizes the role of personal and communal action in building a home for African American community. The novel illustrates what is involved in reconstructing family, home, individual autonomy, and community wholeness. Morrison offers the solution that has remained unspoken in her previous novels: to overcome the past, to escape the cycles of violence set up within their own communities by slavery, communities must rely on their unity and strength as communities. The history of racism in the United States makes it imperative for black Americans to resist racial oppression through collective acts of affirmation, empowerment, and resistance. For Morrison, the sites for such acts are the family and community. The concept of family that Morrison reconstructs in Beloved transcends the biological. Rooted in the laborious exercise of agency, commitment, and reciprocal nurturing, the African family posited here delivers a message about African America today. Thus suggested, the family can provide the basis for communal solidarity and action. The communal solidarity performs as an aspect of solution for Sethe's physical and psychic survival, both of which are at stake. Like the family, the community in Beloved is revised toward an inclusiveness and reciprocity enabled by working through the shadow of an oppressive and violent past. This emphasis on social responsibility, the unselfish devotion of Africans helping other Africans, makes Beloved Morrison's most conscious novel. Therefore I conclude that communal solidarity is the only practical way to alleviate the oppression African people have been experiencing.

Psychoanalysis has opened a new way of reading literature. If literature reveals the unconscious of the writer, it also provides a venue for him to work out his own psychological problems. Writing in this sense can become a writing cure for the writer. We can assume that Eliot has a lot of psychological hang-ups by reading his text. His psychological conflict derives from the gap between his desire to maintain order and the reality which defies his desire. His psychological conflict is so strong that he has to work it out in his text. Reading his text, therefore, is to trace how he goes through the process of writing cure. Eliot's psychological frustration unexpectedly surfaces in his description of the metaphysical poets. He says that they “possessed a mechanism of sensibility which could devour any kind of experience.” The word “devour” in the above quotation vicariously shows Eliot's aggressivity. When this aggressivity is turned inward toward himself, it becomes a kind of phobia of being devoured by unpleasant people or things. A good example of this kind of phobia is shown by “Hysteria”, in which the male speaker is afraid of being devoured by the woman character. This phobia makes Eliot fend for himself in his poems. In “Prufrock,” for example, the speaker shows to have regressed to the oral stage as defense mechanism. This is why there are so many oral images in this poem such as: “To spit out all the butt-ends of my days and ways.” In The Waste Land, on the other hand, Eliot shows his fear of destruction of the Western Civilization manifested by the savagery of the World War I. By the time Eliot comes to write Four Quartets, however, he has cured himself of psychological hang-ups by writing. This is seen by the restored role of time in this poem, which can be contrasted with the fragmented time in The Waste Land.

Most critics read “The Yellow Wallpaper” as a simple story of a woman driven mad by her virtual imprisonment. This article takes issue with the simplistic reading of the story as an autobiographical account of Gilman's experience of madness. Here medical gaze disciplines the heroine through surveillance; this constant surveillance results in her paranoia. Discipline and surveillance also reinforces the Victorian viewpoint about the inferiority of women. The protagonist's behavior is entirely dictated by the rules of her all-knowing husband/doctor. Her superficial adaptation affirms her resignation to the limitations of traditional feminine role. On the other hand her madness represents resistance to the oppressive gender ideology. In objectifying herself as one of imaginary women in the yellow wallpaper the heroine can be freed from the physical and spiritual imprisonment. The fact that her husband faints at the end establishes the dramatic power of her new freedom. In the final scene madness becomes a kind of transcendent sanity.

Since her first collection of poetry, A Change of World (1951), appeared, Adrienne Rich has been a major and influential figure in the literary world. As a poet, feminist thinker, and political activist, she has been not only providing some of the best-written poetry of recent times, but also has written some of the most scholarly books of feminist criticism, such as Of Woman Born: Motherhood as Experience and Institution (1976) and On Lies, Secrets and Silence (1979). Her essays provide an important context for her poems. Rich's style and subject matter have undergone significant changes. From the 1970s, Rich began to identify herself as a radical feminist and develop a distinctively woman's voice. Rich also became aware of the need for a poetic language to explore and rename the unique experiences of women hitherto silenced or unrepresented in literature. So she attempted to shape a language capable of articulating the maternal and feminine experience. Feminist scholars responded in various ways to Rich's controversial essay “Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence” (1980), but it has become a cornerstone of feminist and lesbian theorizing. She not only offered a critical analysis of heterosexuality, but reconceptualized lesbian love as natural and normal. Now a politically active lesbian, Rich has accordingly narrowed her poetic perspective to accommodate that position. Rich is both controversial and celebrated for her activism, and developed into not only one of the most widely read but also the most widely resisted woman poets of the century.

In The Blithedale Romance, the four main characters, Miles Coverdale, Zenobia, Priscilla, and Hollingsworth set out for Blithedale, the utopian community modelled after Brook Farm ostensibly on a mission of reform and dedication. Every character from the first chapter wears his veil. Not only do the characters sham behind their names, they are also screened by the roles they assume in the “counterfeit Arcadia”. No one is what he appears to be. Nathaniel Hawthorne never lets us forget for long the deceptive quality of appearance and reality signalized by the dominant imagery of veil. In the first chapter of The Blithedale Romance, the veil, at first merely a piece of gauze hiding the features of Veiled Lady quickly becomes a metaphor for the mystery surrounding the identity of Moodie and Zenobia. As the tale progresses, it takes on the character of a snowstorm, Zenobia's hothouse flower, Westervelt's set of false teeth and pair of spectacles, a window curtain of Zenobia's boarding-house, Coverdale's “leafy retreat,” and the black water of a river at night hiding Zenobia's body. Hawthorne uses this romance to create the possibility of a new Eden but the Blithedalers enact another Fall from Eden. Through their selfishness and irresponsibility, Hawthorne reveals the impossibility of establishing a new Eden. They are fated to be, not the reformers of the world, but only members of the Hawthornean brotherhood of evil. The title Blithedale read as Happy Valley then is ironic; the happy valley turns out to be a fool's paradise. The most obvious thing a veil usually does is to cover, hide, or disguise. To wear a veil implies some limitation within the relationship with otherness, a permeable barrier that represents an awareness of distance. Trying to remain as objective author, Hawthorne insists upon the distance, that is, authorial stance by the means of his famous withdrawal or self-veiling. Veiling can be seen as a way of expressing an understanding of the distance between author and audience. Owing to “veil” imagery, Hawthorne achieves a remarkably ironic aesthetic distancing from the action of the novel. In The Blithedale Romance, one of Hawthorne's greatest accomplishments, the veiling finally contributes much to romance's most ambiguous and multi-leveled structure.

The image of the new world is presumed to be important in Milton's poetry. In Milton's Paradise Lost, the new world is important and the imperialistic threat of Satan to the new world is also one of the major interests in this epic. Satan launches into the chaos to find the new world with some curiosity for the new world and its dwellers. Satan, however, betrays his distorted view on the new world and its people, which we can find in the European new world explorers. Satan's journey to the new world also looks like the explorer of the new world and merchants from the colonized land. Eden is described with realistic geographical details. With its firm root in geography Eden seems to be more real than just an imaginary paradise. Satan is looking at the garden of Eden with the eye of an imperialist. And we are introduced to Eden by and with Satan. Satan also sees beyond the outward meaning of Eden, which the residents seem to overlook. But his imperialistic insight deteriorates the meaning of Eden. Milton employs the image of the middle age maps which placed the world in the middle and with the outer world full of monsters and horrible things. Satan journeys from the monstrous world to the new, paradisiacal land. Satan is conscious of his journey to the new land. It means that he has the identity of the old world. Here, not only imperialism, in which Satan seems to believe, but also the old world, which supports the causes for the imperialism is heavily criticized. The new world in this epic which the imperialists want to colonize is in the religious and political level.

The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze performance-based assessment in the context of elementary school English education. 12 elementary school teachers answered to an open-ended questionnaire. The findings were as follows: 1) To measure students' achievement and progress were identified as major aims of assessment. 2) Observation logs, worksheets, interview, peer and self-assessment, paper-and-pencil test, assignments, anecdotal reports were used in order of contents of assessment. 3) The grading system mostly depended upon the global impression of teachers without specific criteria 4) The results of assessment were effective for identifying students' level of achievement, but not for individualized teaching. 5) Most teachers had positive attitudes toward the theoretical rationale of performance assessment, but suggested many substantial problems should be settled down. Based on the finding some implications were made: 1) Teachers' perspectives for the assessment should be changed. Also they need sufficient time and support to practice, adjust, and reflect their own teaching. 2) Assessment should be designed to help student's progress through ongoing processes 3) Systematic and reliable criteria of scoring need to be developed.
