  1. [국내논문]   Charles Dickens's View of Religion in Bleak House

    Baik Seok-Hyun
    신영어영문학 = The New studies of english language & literature no.29 ,pp. 1 - 13 , 2004 , 1226-9670 ,

    초록

    In Bleak House Dickens shows his faith in religion by satirizing his contemporary social institution which disregards human needs, and the upper class that is irresponsible and hypocritical. Here the institution is represented by the Court of the Chancery, characterized by a merciless lawyer, Vholes. As the defender of a lax system, the upper class is typed by false philanthropists, Mrs. Pardiggles and Mrs. Jellyby using religion for their own needs. The undesirable effect of the corrupted institution and the irresponsible upper class is not limited only to them, but also extends from an innocent individual to a whole society. It is explicitly proved through Jo, a symbolic victim of Victorian society, showing a social tie that society is an organism of interrelated parts. Though Dickens accuses the irresponsibilities of the paralyzed society, he hopes for a bright future in the society, and here as a counteraction of the foggy circumstances, he presents Esther's unselfish love, supported by Allan's active service. Dickens seems to believe that the helpless can not be relieved by any religion, without the resurrection of human nature which Esther and Allan show. In fact, Dickens's view of religion today remains familiar to us.

  2. [국내논문]   The Clinic of Psychoanalytic Dichotomy in the Narratives of Poe and Plath - The Observer versus the Observed

    Che Gum-Hee
    신영어영문학 = The New studies of english language & literature no.29 ,pp. 15 - 31 , 2004 , 1226-9670 ,

    초록

    There are numerous characters in Poe and Plath's narratives, who can be categorized either as the observer or as the observed. Their narratives deal with the clinical observation process, in which the observation tends to overlook the polysemic characteristics of the unconscious. The observer usually confuses the world of unconscious with what he/she calls the sick or the abnormal, and Poe and Plath introduce a similar process in which the observer is psychologically separated from the observed. The observer functions as the master of madness (or death) who pretends to have some a priori knowledge of the unconscious, but the character is unable to be a part of the unconscious and fails to communicate with the observed. We soon realize how difficult it is to see the observers as sane people.

  3. [국내논문]   Madness, Satire, and Jonathan Swift - A Study of A Tale of a Tub

    Kang Moon-Soon
    신영어영문학 = The New studies of english language & literature no.29 ,pp. 33 - 50 , 2004 , 1226-9670 ,

    초록

    This article studies how satire and madness are related in Jonathan Swift, by examining selected works of Swift, particularly, A Tale of a Tub, in which Swift played the role of physician-satirists, and in which his personal fears of madness made it a controlling motif. Because of the anxiety left by the civil disruptions of the preceding century, the madman's very unreason was considered a threat to national unity, endangering the maintenance of uniformity, order, and established principles. Madness was eventually equated with disruptive idleness; the mad, excluded from healthy, orderly society were brutally punished for their irrationality. Swift's approach in his satire to madness is primarily punitive; his madmen are grotesques, guilty of dangerous nonconformity, justly confined in a fictional, yet realistically grim Bedlam. Swift attacks them to expose their disease and hopefully force them to abandon what he considered their sinfully volitional madness, and finally Swift is using characteristically violent satirical method and equally showing characteristic Augustan revulsion toward madness.

  4. [국내논문]   Keats's Political Romance - Endymion and Isabella

    Kim Jong-Soong
    신영어영문학 = The New studies of english language & literature no.29 ,pp. 51 - 66 , 2004 , 1226-9670 ,

    초록

    The aim of this paper is to examine Keats's engagement with the events and ideas of his day. Keats's poetry has too often been held apart as secluded bower of imagination. This is partly due to the fact that Keats's political and ideological comments are not announced, but are encoded figuratively and symbolically. It was traditional to read Endymion as a deliberate allegory, conceived more or less upon Platonic lines, of the poet's longing for and eventual union with the spirit of ideal beauty. But I view Endymion as a political romance rather than as an allegory. On this basis, the study investigates Keats's political comments as response to the politics of his contemporary England in Endymion. I treat Isabella as a critical romance and treatise on capitalists who exploit their workers in England and its colonies. The brothers of Isabella are in the business of emptying other men of all their life but the husk. In this sense, Keats reveals the fact that the oppressive political and economic conditions that define this world also move human society headlong toward fragmentation and finally to dissolution.

  5. [국내논문]   Hawthorne and Romance - Rereading Fanshawe

    Kim Young-Soo
    신영어영문학 = The New studies of english language & literature no.29 ,pp. 67 - 83 , 2004 , 1226-9670 ,

    초록

    This paper aims at rereading Hawthorne's first romance, Fanshawe, and finding its strength and weakness as a romance that reveals its potential for his later major works. Fanshawe has been generally deemed as a failure, and thus neglected by both readers and critics. As it faithfully followed the Gothic formulas and devices that were in fashion in the 1820's, it became a traditional romantic love story teemed with adventure, seduction, abduction, confrontation and rescue. But it still shows Hawthorne's potential in its impressive writing style and presentation of minor characters: while its major characters are sacrificed for the dramatic effects, its minor ones are presented lively and humorously which enliven the storyline; its plot is full of various incidents and coincidences to enhance dramatic effects. These are analyzed here in view of the theories on romance by Hawthorne himself and other critics.

  6. [국내논문]   War Imagery in Robert Bly's “The Teeth Mother Naked at Last”

    Lee Kwang-Woon
    신영어영문학 = The New studies of english language & literature no.29 ,pp. 85 - 100 , 2004 , 1226-9670 ,

    초록

    This paper attempts to analyze the image of the Vietnam War in Robert Bly's representative longer war poem, “The Teeth Mother Naked at Last” in Sleepers Joining Hands. In this poem, Bly depicts the battle scenes realistically to reveal the misery of the War and he points out some causes and effects of the War. He regards psychic disorder, racial prejudice, and economic reason as the major causes of the War. Among them, Bly puts emphasis on the psychic imbalance of American society as the major problem and suggests some therapeutic anti-dotes. He strongly voices the necessity of atonement and urges each individual and society to regain the mother consciousness and mammalian consciousness which, Bly believes, help maintain the peace of the globe.

  7. [국내논문]   Rewriting American History - Williams and History

    Shim Jin-Ho
    신영어영문학 = The New studies of english language & literature no.29 ,pp. 101 - 118 , 2004 , 1226-9670 ,

    초록

    This paper examines William Carlos Williams' view of American history in light of postcolonial perspective especially In the American Grain published in 1925. In the American Grain is an important work because it reveals Williams' view of American history. In this book, Williams demonstrates that Native Americans and women, marginalized and silenced by the colonial values, lose their resistant hope. Williams tries to deconstruct American history by rewriting it from the perspective of the marginalized others. The best examples of the figures who have de-centered consciousness are P?e Sebastian Rasles and Aaron Burr. Williams identifies Rasles and Burr with the New World itself. Williams believes that “hybridization” and “crosspollenization” can obliterate the differences of race, gender, religion and sexuality. Denouncing the tradition inherited by the Spanish conquerors and the Puritans, Williams wants to retrieve distorted women's sexuality. For Williams, women's sexuality is the generative source of American society against Patriarchy and Imperialism. Regenerating women's sexuality points the way toward the hybridized and crosspollenized New World. In this regard, I maintain that Williams is a forerunner who predicts the advent of the multicultural and multiracial American society.

  8. [국내논문]   Mind-Emptying in the Poetry of Wallace Stevens - The Middle Way

    Yoon Chong-Kook
    신영어영문학 = The New studies of english language & literature no.29 ,pp. 119 - 137 , 2004 , 1226-9670 ,

    초록

    This paper studies Stevens' meditative method of mind-emptying by self-negation in his poetry. Five poems under review here including “The Snow Man” and “An Ordinary Evening in New Haven” best show how Stevens demonstrates the meditative process of mind-emptying in order to perceive a pure reality of emptiness as sunyata in the Middle Way. His method is a close parallel to the Zen mind practised by Buddhists to explore Emptiness, the idea of which is not mere emptiness as opposed to fullness, but it transcends and embraces both emptiness and fullness, making Full Emptiness in the Middle Way. The meditative process of mind-emptying is practised at four phases of detachment from the mind aimed at reaching a pure reality.

  9. [국내논문]   Identical Case Marking and Scrambling in Korean

    Chung Chan
    신영어영문학 = The New studies of english language & literature no.29 ,pp. 139 - 162 , 2004 , 1226-9670 ,

    초록

    This paper explores constraints on scrambling in Korean, especially focusing on how scrambling possibilities are affected by identical case on arguments and adjuncts. Sells (1990) and Kuno (1980) account for this type of restriction based on the assumption of the existence of the VP constituent or of ambiguity processing constraint. However, they do not account for all the given data appropriately. This paper pursues a syntactic approach to the restriction, proposing the following: (ⅰ) a grammatically more prominent element linearly precedes a less prominent element when they bear the same case marking, and (ⅱ) the grammatical prominence is determined by the already well-known notions such as valence values (i.e., a subject is more prominent than a complement) and relative depth of embedding (i.e., a matrix element is more prominent than an embedded element). The validity of these proposals is examined through seven different constructions where identical case markings are realized on arguments and adjuncts.

  10. [국내논문]   The Use of Literature in EFL Settings within a Response-Oriented Framework

    Kim Hae-Ri
    신영어영문학 = The New studies of english language & literature no.29 ,pp. 163 - 180 , 2004 , 1226-9670 ,

    초록

    This study investigates the use of literature in the teaching of English as a foreign language (EFL) in light of communicative language teaching (CLT), reader-response approach, and integration of four language skills. To prove how to utilize literature in real classroom settings, the author presents a three-step framework of reading in which diverse activities are introduced to develop students' language abilities and extend their life-experiences through close reading of a text. For this purpose, a picture book, Fly Away Home, was selected to show these processes. The author hopes that EFL teachers may find challenging ideas about using literature in their instruction.
