This paper aims at examining Jules Laforgue's voice in T. S. Eliot's Inventions of the March Hare: Poems 1909-1917, which was posthumously published by Christopher Ricks in 1996. As Eliot confessed in 1950 in an essay, “What Dante Means to Me,” Laforgue was the first to teach him how to speak, to teach him the poetic possibilities of his own idiom of speech (TCC 126). Eliot's early poems, like “Goldfish” and “Suite Clownesque” written in 1910, show strong imprints of Laforgue's way of speaking. The evasive, self-mocking and ironic Laforgue must have become deeply imbedded in Eliot's memory. This paper investigates how Laforgue's characteristic form of expression was transformed into Eliot's, and was developed in Eliot's posthumous poems like “Goldfish” and “Suite Clownesque” in Inventions of the March Hare.

  2. [국내논문]   The Lamp in Neoclassicism and the Mirror in Romanticism

The metaphor, mirror and lamp, set by M. H. Abrams has been used as an easy tool to distinguish between Neoclassicism and Romanticism. Although this dichotomy is not as influential as it was after the emergence of Deconstructionism, it still seems to serve as a useful touchstone. Because of the connotation of the metaphor that lamp is superior to mirror, however, it has left a misconception that Neoclassicism depends on imitation and thus is less creative than Romanticism. When we look into the poetry of the two literary periods, we can see that the dichotomy of reflector and projector does not work very well. For instance, Pope's “Eloisa to Abelard” is all about the emotions between the two lovers. Other eighteenth century poets like Young, Collins, Crabbe and Cowper did not try to imitate external world but to express it in a creative way. On the other hand, the Romantic poets like Wordsworth, Byron, and Shelley tried to reflect the society in their poetry.

Korea is an absence of writers' position in relation to their discourse. This paper argues that such an absence contributes to the economy of discursive production, resulting in a quantitative explosion of academic papers at the expense of their quality. Such a tendency is accelerated by the absence of readers. As Derrida among many others has asserted, writing in itself is essentially discursive, running wild with no transcendental signified fixing their meandering. Only when the signifier is geared to (the community of) readers, it is anchored to its signified: meaning is social. It follows that scholarly writings in the absence of their readers can be asocial and anarchical, endlessly reproducing themselves in total freedom without constraint. The readers force the writer to take a specific position in regard to his discourse, thus limiting his discursive freedom and his wayward movements. Only then writing becomes his writing, and is given into a system of two-way communication where every argument is expected to find its opponent and defend its position. Such a process of a writer defending his position makes his discourse more systematic and more theoretically conscious, eventually contributing to the maturity of Korean scholars.

This paper re-reads Wordsworth's Ruined Cottage from the ecological, or holistic perspective in order to overcome the perspective of dichotomy proceeded by New Historicism and Feminism. As both of New Historicism and Feminism emphasized on the de-construction of the powerful poetic self, or, patriarchical manhood in Wordsworth's poems, neither of them can successfully secure a more integrated and holistic perspective. Those critics, as a result, read the Ruined Cottage as an embodiment of the poetical means of an aesthetic retreat or escape from the political and social reality. The revisionary history of the Ruined Cottage, however, suggests Wordsworth's keen concerns on the communal relationship between human community and nature in the British rural area. My argument, therefore, seeks to demonstrate the inseparability of seemingly uncompatible elements, such as, man and nature, and, women and men, by examining the revisionary history of the Ruined Cottage.

What lies beneath the theory of Slavoj Žižek is 'ethics of the Real.' As a prominent successor of Lacan, Žižek criticizes Althusser's theory of ideology and advances to find the possibility of separating a subject from its alienation by the dominance of the Subject (the Other). According to him, unlike Althusser's explanation of ideology and ideological appellation by the Subject, there must be a gap which lies between subject and the Other, but we cannot recognize it because of fantasy whose role conceals the fact that there isn't the Other as we usually think. In addition, with the term 'fundamental antagonism,' he describes both subject and other as unaccessible and impossible to grasp their whole and entire meaning. Žižek's works can stimulate both deconstructionists and Marxist intellectuals to reconsider their theories on subject and its relationships with the social formation.

This paper aims to clarify that Shakespeare's conception of time and eternity in his Sonnets can be most coherently and concretely interpreted by the theories of materialism later elaborated. My chief analysis bifurcates into two groups of sonnets, procreation sonnets and poetry sonnets, leading to the conclusion that Shakespeare's assertion of eternity enabled by “the image” and “memory” actually depends on temporality. Thus, this temporal eternity developed for the continuation of human relations with “posterity” or future generations in time is antithetical to the Platonic and medieval conception of eternity. And finally, it is suggested that Shakespeare's poetics of materialism reflects a human historical activity of a Renaissance poet, who is creating better conditions for human life through the medium of language than those already existing.

The tree metaphor, which is most consistently employed throughout Leaves of Grass, is the vehicle through which Whitman expresses his major themes. This paper attempts to view three aspects of Whitman's tree metaphor. First, Whitman finds the artistic quality in trees, and he bestows his poems with the characteristics of trees, rendering his poems with the qualities of trees. Second, Whitman views trees as major resources to build the foundations of the New World. The red-wood tree, which is often identified with Indians, is depicted as voluntary victims for “the superber race.” Whitman's anti-ecological attitude is discussed concerning this matter. Third, Whitman's sense of unity is discussed through the tree metaphor. Whitman depicts the New World and himself as a tree with lots of foliage which are interconnected.

To understand Hemingway's literature, we must analyze his works with an intensive investigation into main characters. An analysis of main characters cannot be made separately and Hemingway's characters consist of heroes and heroines. However, Hemingway's intentions are revealed only through heroes. Thus, this work will analyze heroes only. In Hemingway's works, Nick Adams awakes to the realities of life and social surroundings by going though violence, death, evil and pain. In many different works, the young Nick Adams opens his eyes to see violence and hardships. Jake Barns in The Sun Also Rises and Frederick Henry in A Farewell to Arms are not only very important characters, but they share unmistakable similarities with Hemingway. Hemingway believed that through True at First Light he came to a most important turning point in his literature. Nick Adams enriches his experience, sees life differently and develops onto undefeated heroes.

Kathy Acker's narrative is full of splits and gaps, which evidently disqualify the age-old regime of coherency in a linguistic structure. Breathing in an environment where values have been exhausted and nothing remains except disinterest and dispassion, her characters often suffer from psychological breakdowns. We later come across the idea that the notion of exhaustion, which produces incoherent usage of words and disruptive behaviors for Acker's cyberpunk novel, promotes a representation of silence in the hypertext fiction of Micheal Joyce. The journey into indifference, beginning with a series of language games and the knot of splits and gaps, finally reaches the point where nothing remains except the deep breath of silence. Silence then facilitates the ontology of individual discourse while discrediting the totality of mass discourse in order to generate what I would call the rhetoric of indifference.

This thesis is to study Shepard's two major dramatic themes. The limitation of language in True West is so emphasized that two major characters have trouble communicating each other and with the world. To overcome its limits and conflicts Shepard tries 'to reach new recognition' and 'to deconstruct the stereotypical value system' by means of 'myth' and 'violence'. Lee and Austin struggle between 'real west' and 'true west', which bring conflicts in True West. Myth in Shepard is expected to restore its original symbolic vitality and to explain the transcendental truth after the deconstruction of the commercialized myths through violence. This thesis is to focus on two kinds of deconstruction; One is the deconstruction of the West, the other is the deconstruction of characters. Therefore they could recognize not only the other side of their nature, the double nature but one is inherent in the other. In this way Shepard creates his own myth. The scene of fratricide, which is the denouement of the plot, symbolizes his own creation of myth.
