The purpose of this study is to analyze Samuel Taylor Coleridge's “Christabel” into the Dialectic of Desire and Reconfiguration. First of all, Christabel had dreams of her own lover, prayed for him in the wood, and went to a big oak tree at midnight. It was not average girl's behaviour. Second, Sir Leoline could not forget his dead wife. He ordered the sacristan to ring the heavy bell and all people to recall her death. He had another trauma when he had parted with his best friend, Lord Roland. In Lacan's vision, Christabel's desire and Leoline's desire fixated on Christabel's mother. Their fixation on the cause is called “fundamental fantasy” by Lacanian. When Christabel found Geraldine in the wood and they went to the castle, Geraldine became “object a” and shook up their fixation. Finally, Christabel found her mother's desire from Geraldine and started Reconfiguration. Leoline found himself alienated and started the Dialectic of Desire that moved from a desire subject to a jouissance subject, too.

This paper deals with Roman Polanski's interpretation of Shakespeare's Macbeth. In his 1971 film adaptation, many passages from the original play were cut or changed for cinematic purposes. The film's ending is the most significant change from the original text. Polanski directly presents the bloody head of Macbeth beheaded by Macduff, and the scene evokes horror and the cruelty of human beings. He inserts a wordless scene at the end, in which Donalbain enters the witches' lair. This scene implies that a power struggle will resume soon and will be repeated endlessly. Polanski is very negative and pessimistic about power, and manipulates scenes to strengthen his own point of view. His view of human nature is also pessimistic, which is exemplified in his depiction of Rosse, who betrays Macbeth later, and Macbeth who never regrets his own bloody actions. The film is a powerful depiction of ruthless power and Polanski's own naturalistic, nihilistic and pessimistic presentation of the unstable nature of power and human cruelty.

Shelley's longest epic poem written in the early stage of his poetic career, deals with the French Revolution, though it is set in medieval East Asia. The revolution in the Golden City in the poem, led by Laon and Cythna, fails eventually, as the French Revolution did. Nevertheless, the message of the poem is 'despair not,' which was addressed to the poet's contemporaries who were in a despairing mood after the failure of the French Revolution, as the poem was written to rekindle hope and enthusiasm for social reformation among them. The poem is important in that it contains all the germs of his ideas on social reformation, such as the necessity of social reformation, the hate of violence and the importance of love, which are more fully explored in his later mature poems. No less importantly, as a Victorian feminist remarks, Cythna represents a new type of woman who thinks independently and realizes the oppressive nature of her society, and ultimately rises and leads the revolution to reform it. In this sense the poem is a feminist critique of a male-dominated contemporary society.

This paper concerns the images of hands in the two, great American novels: Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio and J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye. Under the high possibility that Salinger might have had Anderson's work in mind when Salinger created the famous scene of Antolini's apartment, this paper focuses on the two writers' depictions of the hand-images and their thematic implications. Anderson's opening story “Hands” deals with how innocent sexuality and romantic idealism represented by its hero are misunderstood and devalued by the power of socialized, standardized sexuality. In a different way Salinger creates a similar situation where the possibility of human contact and true communication is blocked and limited by social norm of sexuality and gay potential. The two writers' successful uses of the hand-image turn out to be an important vehicle to convey their common literary messages about how human contact and emotional fulfillment are essential elements for utopian possibility.

The Women we meet in Beowulf-Wealhtheow, Hygd and Freawaru and Hildeburh, seem to be passive and keen to create peace amongst the warriors, while some suffer incredibly. The tragic and helpless situation of women is brought out in the Finn episode which concentrates on the plight of Hildeburh. The fragility of contracts aimed at achieving peace is emphasized by the concentration on Hideburh and, by placing the episode directly after Wealhtheow's speech in which she attempts to weave peace, the poet stresses the hopelessness of Wealhtheow's mission and the vulnerability of women, and creates a mood of impending doom. Their role is one of passively waiting and attempting to wear peace in a hostile world. Wealhtheow is presented as the perfect queen, in particular in the traditional role of 'peace-weaver'. She is a model of diplomacy and tact as she subtly tries to ensure that her young sons succeed her husband and reminds Hrothulf, who presents a threat to the boys, of his obligations.

The Miller's Tale is one of the representative tales which reflect the characteristics of Chaucerian narrative style and its effect on the audience. It moves beyond the limits of its generic tradition in the Miller's description of characters, setting, the intricate interweaving of its separate plot strands. In particular, the narrator of the tale, the Miller (Robin), must be the storyteller who avails himself of Chaucerian storytelling traits of avoiding to resolve ambiguities or of preferring for the simultaneous depiction of related events. His narrative is a perfect vehicle both for unmasking the Knight's philosophical and aristocratic ideology and for uncovering the physical needs commonly lying behind human beings. Moreover, he is also the storyteller who knows the true meaning of 'game,' in terms of carnival. Though he is morally corrupted and socially belongs to lower class, Robin is one of the most artistic storytellers in The Canterbury Tales.

This paper argues that J. M. Coetzee's Life and Times of Michael K depicts its main character Michael K as one who takes flight by becoming-animal from the territory to which he was captured. Michael K becomes animal in order to escape from the battlefield of the conflicting forces which capture individuals as their terms. In South Africa the ruling white's use of violence for keeping their superior position called the black's opposing violence. These two violent forces induce the individual members of the community and endow them with their significance as part of the systems. Michael K, it being impossible to sustain his position, escapes from all camps which symbolize the institutionalized organizations and keeps his journey for finding a garden where he could raise the vegetables with no outer interruptions. His effort is interpreted as insisting on his individuality as a being independent of any forces and preparing for the society to come after the war.

This paper examines the characteristics of one of Goldsmith's laughing comedies She Stoops to conquer with respect to its plot, characters, wit, farce, and dramatic techniques. In respect to plot development, the episode which makes the characters mistake an old mansion for an inn becomes the driving force inducing the laughter. The creation of characters- Marlowe, who keeps the grace of 18th century decorum; a wise woman Kate, who tests the truth of the man she loves in the disguise of a maid ; and the playful Tony who is mischievous but without any malice-also makes this play follow the traditions of classic comedy. In addition, the roles played by the lower class people in this play well reflect the definitions of comedy since Aristotle that a comedy deals with the follies of lower class people. One of the reasons why this play achieved a big success as a laughing comedy is that wit and farce are found everywhere in this play.

This paper examines the theme of woman's retreat to “a room of one's own”, with emphasis on the imbalance between intelligence and feeling, in Doris Lessing's “To Room Nineteen”. Since Virginia Woolf highlighted the importance of “a room of one's own” as an indispensable condition conductive to women's writing of fiction in the early twenties century, the desire and demand for “a room of one's own” as an independent space of refuge and creation has greatly increased. Nonetheless, the aloneness or oneness in “a room of one's own” both reflects and results in a withdrawal from human relationships or action, an addiction to reverie, and sometimes a “suicidal vulnerability” as Elaine Showalter points out. Presenting itself as a story about “a failure in intelligence”, “To Room Nineteen” represents the ontological and epistemological fragmentation of a middle class heroine who ceaselessly tries to reason about the predicaments of her “intelligent” marriage life but ultimately fails. The significance of this story lies on its unique combination of two relevant narratives, the imbalance between intelligence and feeling, and the preponderance of “a room of one's own” which had a tilt to neurosis or withdrawal symptoms in the mid-twenties century European feminism discourses.

As Shepard exploits the theatricality of the inexplicable, it is necessary to shed light on both theatrical performance and text based criticism. This study, therefore, researches his attempts to fantasy. Fantasy in Shepard results from the American zeitgeist which is a key source of his inspiration. That's why this study insists he is an avant-garde dramatist. It analyzes the aspects of crossing-over real realms and fantasy realms in Fool for Love. Shepard uses two opposite discourses and destructive dramatic devices to present the possibility of a whole new realm coexisting theatrical facts and imagination.
