    Considering that fascism has flourished on the basis of economic and social crises historically, there are many similarities between the economic situations of the 1930s' European societies and those of the present neoliberal age. These similarities are derived from the fact that the two eras, accordingly, share social and ideological orientations. Terry Eagleton viewed that one possible future after Postmodern end-of-history thinking would be fascism. After participating in the Spanish Civil War, W. H. Auden and George Orwell assumed opposing attitudes to Fascism becoming world system. They regarded Germany under Nazism and Russia under Stalin as totalitarian states and criticised them as such. Their efforts were to defend democratic socialism with human face.

    This paper aims to re-examine the writing and the invisibility as the survival strategy of the protagonist's construction of identity in Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man. It focuses on the process of the protagonist's resist against White society's imposition of false names and inappropriate identities upon him. Almost all of the critical evaluations of writing in Invisible Man refer to conclusion, in which the protagonist secludes himself in his basement and becomes a complete self through the act of writing. This paper, however, insists that the protagonist's hibernation is not only a method to achieve a true self but also a means to cope with reality and society. The protagonist encounters diverse experiences of African-American's life in a discriminatory society. He comes to realize that the survival strategies of the Black characters who remained the subordinate relationship with White people are not the right model plan to follow. The protagonist, stepping out of a reality manipulated by dominant ideological formulations, is aware of the possibilities for identity, and thus transforms his isolated state into an opportunity to learn new strategies for survival. In the end of his writing, the protagonist eventually understands and accepts the nature of his own self.

    The purpose of this paper is to examine love-one of the dominant themes that run through Wuthering Heights-using Emmanuel Levinas's theories of Eros and alterity. He insists that true love neither exists as a state of “confusion,” nor merely as a form of mutual identification. While the two may be capable of the closest and deepest intimacy, nothing can transcend the barrier of “proximity”; two beings can never become one. The narcissistic tendencies of Heathcliff and Catherine should be recognized as a refutation of Eros. Their bonding and identification are actually nothing more than flawed, reciprocated passion. Levinas argues that one's denial of another's alterity is borne out of a desire to dominate or subordinate the Other, which will always culminate in a vicious spiral of conflict, violence or war. Heathcliff's obsession to identify with Catherine, which eventually leads him to exact cruel revenge on her and the others, can be explained clearly through Levinas's view on Eros.

    The purpose of this study is to examine the relation between characters' costume and their consciousness in Henry James's The American. Human beings have expressed their desire to draw attention and win the respect by means of costume. Women in the 19th century perceived their husband's position and their father's wealth and felt impacts influencing themselves from social life. Their costume reflected tastes, individuality, situation and their consciousness, so costume was important role to women in the Victorian era. In The American Noemie Nioche's splendid changing clothing reflected her situation, physically improved wealth. There were Madame de Cintre hiding into convent, Madame de Bellegarde showing husband's position, Catherine Bread suggesting her boring life through apparel. Costumes chosen by many characters represented their identities according to their life style.

  5. [국내논문]   Absalom, Absalom! : The Paradox of Revenge

    Seok-Hyun Baik
    신영어영문학 = The New studies of english language & literature no.46 ,pp. 75 - 88 , 2010 , 1226-9670 ,

    초록

    In Absalom! Absalom!, we finds the images of revenge inflicted in the cultural traits and conflicts of a patriarchal family, which Thomas Sutpen's 'design' exposes. Sutpen's revenge, which originates from the affront that he suffered in his boy, means to be a rich, powerful Southern gentleman; to vindicate an equal right and opportunity of every poor boy who has a dream. But his ambition toward success drives him to his moral blindness. In his world his wives and sons are chosen or discarded by the usefulness of his 'design'. He motivates one son to murder his mixed-blood son, which eventuates in fratricide. He also despises the very lower class that mirrors his own origin. Paradoxically his revenge focuses on reproducing the artificial barriers of race or class; not on trying to get rid of those barriers, but rather on founding a dynasty that embodies his social superiority. Finally his design stained with distorted revenges, proves only a morally twisted Southern fantasy. And his fall or the Southern collapse in the larger cultural context seems to be morally inevitable.

    What effect does mysticism play on literature? The mysterious effect increases the poetic ambiguity, and the effect makes the artistic beauty deeper. We can clearly find mysticism in two poems of G. M. Hopkins and W. B. Yeats. Hopkins was a priest who praised and honored God his whole life and Yeats also had much interest in religious mysticism such as Druism. In Hopkins's rarely read poem “Spelt from Cibyl's Leave,” we can see mysticism clearly expressed, and a good critique of civilization too. The increasing darkness in this poem seem to represent the spiritual depravity of this wold. Yeats also wrote “The Second Coming” to critique 20th century civilization. The beginning of the 20th century was an uneasy time with the emergence of evil political powers. By analyzing these two poems, we can taste the poetic beauty and symbolism which was used to express mystically the decay and corruption of civilization.

  7. [국내논문]   “A Prototype of His Conception” : Shelley's (Self-)Mothering in Alastor

    Eun-Jung Yook
    신영어영문학 = The New studies of english language & literature no.46 ,pp. 111 - 130 , 2010 , 1226-9670 ,

    초록

    Due to the presence of a precursor poet Wordsworth in the frame narrative and his invocation to “Mother” nature, Percy Bysshe Shelley's Alastor seems to invite an oedipal reading. Alastor is a quintessentially Romantic quest narrative of a poet's coming-of-age, granted, but I suggest a nonoedipal reading of the quest. This paper focuses on the controversial figure of the veiled maid in the poem, the object of the protagonist poet's desire. Via Jacques Lacan's concept of the mirror stage, I argue that the veiled maid is less a beloved than a form of an ideal self image, by identifying with which the poet aspires for an access to a self-constitutive identity uncontaminated by the paternal Law; that she, as the “prototype” of the poet's “conception,” is not a mother figure as quite a few critics believe; and that it is Shelley himself, if anything, who “mothers” his own origin by way of conceiving/bearing this “prototype.” It sounds like -and is-a paradox, but it is an abling paradox, I believe, which is part of the liberating plot for nonoedipal and nonconfrontational self-making Shelley strove for throughout his poetic career.

  8. [국내논문]   “Meaning Much By Saying Little (?)” - Examination of L's Ambivalent Role in Toni Morrison's Love

    Hyun-Kyung Lee
    신영어영문학 = The New studies of english language & literature no.46 ,pp. 131 - 146 , 2010 , 1226-9670 ,

    초록

    In this paper, I focus on the narrator L's role in Toni Morrison's novel Love (2003). Many scholars see her as a benevolent, maternal figure who protects the younger, especially marginalized African American women in racist and sexist society. L celebrates female bonding and protects younger women from patriarchal violence. She also imagines the stigmatized African American woman Celestial as a politicized subject who can resist the institutional violence of the larger society. However, L repeats patriarchal violence, represented by symbolically disinheriting Celestial. L thereby excludes the othered woman from material reality and confines her to a status of 'kept woman' who offers comfort to the wounded patriarch Bill Cosey, consequently confining marginalized women's political agency. I argue that L's contradictory attitude stems from her adherence to the “respectable” images of African American women and her wish for a more “radical” model of female resistance.

    For Eugene O"Neill, a theatre is a temple where the religion of poetical interpretation and symbolic celebration of life is communicated to human beings. His aim as a dramatist was always to make his audience respond on some deeper level to the life on stage and so experience a Dionysian communion with the rebirth and renewal of the self. In order to reach the purpose he used many ritual devices in his plays. Among them the remarkable devices are like these: The Emperor Jones shows an aspect of initiation rite through such expressionistic techniques as the faint, steady thump of a tom-tom, low and vibrating, the figure of the negro, Jeff, the WITCH-DOCTOR, and the silver bullet. Desire under the Elms shows an aspect of Dionysian rite through the love of ecstasy and intoxication by both the conquest of phenomenal desire and the harmony with nature, the whole. Long Days Journey into Night shows an aspect of Christian rite through the confession between father and son, and brothers.

    This paper examines how women in Song of Solomon play their roles regarding Milkman"s spiritual development. Milman realizes who he is while he tracks the history of African ancestors in the South. Milkman originally is an immature blackman without any background which awakens or directs him to the right life as an African American. Milkman gets to wonder his unbalanced identity so that he finally overcomes all patriarchal restrictions and reaches the intact point of an African American. Morrison considers that the possible and positive source which has Milkman change into himself can be originated from the unique African-American motherhood. In African-American"s history, women"s and especially mothers" roles are extremely significant to their children since the roles of motherhood include preserving and bearing African culture as well as fostering their children. The origin to change Milkman is not physical caring but rich perception about African culture and history. Pilate and Ruth seem explicitly different but they have mutual rapport based on motherhood to protect and heal Milkman helping each other. Therefore, he can be born again as a brave African American understanding the value of his ancestors' history and culture.
