Yu, Kil-Jun was a new intellectual and initiated civilization and social reform movements at the end of the Chosun (朝鮮) Dynasty. Especially, he paid a significant contribution to the birth of the Korean modern newspapers. In spite of his contribution, researches dealing with the history of Korean mass media have not paid much attention to civilization movements of Yu, Kil-Jun and his influence on the Korean modern newspapers. This study attempts to reveal the social reform movements and the historical and intel1ectual context of Yu, Kil-Jun"s thoughts, to investigate his recognition of the newspaper through his written works, and to discuss his influence on the birth of the Hansungsunbo(《漢城旬報》), the first modern newspaper in Korea, and the Independent (《독립신문》), the first civil newspaper in Korea. Yu, Kil-Jun was absorbed in the study for the civil service examination (科學) until being 19 years old (1874), when he gave up the examination and began to care about the civilization thoughts. He went to Japan and America in 1881 to learn Western thoughts, culture, and institutions, and got the instruction of Hukujawa Yukichi (福澤諭吉) and Edward S. Moss, the civilization thinkers in Japan and America. Coming back to Chosun, he began to lead the progressive civilization movements for the reform of political and social system and enlightenment of the people as a civilization activist both within and out of the government. He wrote and published a lot of works including the Suyukyunmun (《西遊見聞》) written in Korean and Chinese to enlighten the people, and carried out the progressive reform movements. Yu, Kil-Jun especially contributed to the birth of the Korean modern newspapers. When he was studying in Japan, he visited Japanese newspaper companies and wrote on the importance and influence of the modern newspaper. He fully understood the situation of newspaper publication and the contents of them in the civilized nations, the necessity of the publication, the role of pressmen, the system and the contents of newspaper, and the prospect of them. He believed that being strong Chosun Dynasty depended on the Civilization of the people, which was deeply related to the publication of newspapers. During working as a public official of Chosun Dynasty, he wrote a variety of papers, the basic principles of the newspaper publication, the first publication address, and the interpretation works of the newspapers. These works provided with the theoretical and practical foundation of the publication of the Hansungsunbo, the first modern newspaper in Korea, and he played a leading role in the process of publication of the Independent, the first civil newspaper in Korea. Yu, Kil- Jun didn"t directly participate in the publication of this two newspapers because of the change of political environments. But he deeply understood the newspaper and provided with the philosophical and practical foundation of the publication of the modern newspaper as a civilization thinker and activist in the turning point at the end of Chosun Dynasty. His works allow us to deepen our understanding of historical context of the modern newspaper publication in Korea, and also provides with valuable insights to searching for the appropriate direction of mass media in the new civilization historical turning point of the 21st century.

To date the Korean newspapers during the U. S. Military Government Period have been evaluated to be of instigative tendencies with many distortions and exaggerations at the news reportings and commentaries. This study is to investigate (1) whether the evaluation is right, (2) If so, to what extent the papers distort. For the purposes, this study examined the tendencies of news reportings and commentaries of four newspapers related to The Moscow Agreement on Korea - the trusteeship issue in Korea which was one of the most important and controversial issues at that period. All the relevant news articles are sorted out of four main dailies : the Dong-a Ilbo (pro-right wings), the Chosun Ilbo (pro-right wings or the middle-of-the-road), the Jayu Sinmun(progressive the middle-of-the-road), and the Jungang Sinmun (progressive the middle-of-the-road or pro-left wings). This study performed the quantitative analysis about quantities, subjects, reporting attitude, and information sources, and also critical analysis about the historical meanings. According to the results of research, overall it could be said that the Chosun Ilbo, the Jayu Sinmun, and the Jungang Sinmun did relatively impartial news reportings and commentaries under the acute confrontation among left-right political groups, while the Dong-a Ilbo did partial reportings for right wings. However at the early stage when The Agreement was reported, all of four papers which regarded the trusteeship as the opposite concept of independence, emphasized only the trusteeship issue despite that the establishment of provisional democratic government was the first article therein. After the full text of The Agreement was known, the neutral attitude of reportings gradually increased. Especially the Chosun Ilbo and the Jungang Sinmun continued to stimulated the formation of united front among left-right political groups. But the whole society was already overwhelmed by the agitative public opinion of desperate opposition to trusteeship. And the left wings who accepted The Agreement failed to make the people understand and to persuade their standpoints as the left wings were suppressed by the U. S. Military Government. Under such situation the reasonable reportings of the issue could not be accepted. After all two divided governments were established at Korean peninsula. This historical development could not explained only by the report tendencies of newspapers. But it is undeniable that the report tendencies of newspapers gave much influence on the nation"s future at that time when the number of information media was very limited.

Most of the literature on e-democracy focuses on the media-centered, technology-deterministic approach. However, the core of e-democracy is the change in the production and flow of political information in cyberspace. In terms of communication, this study regards the concept of e-democracy as being attained by the participation of both ordinary people and politicians in cyberspace in the process of political decision making regarding the issues related to everyday life. There are four types of e-democracy in cyberspace: plebiscitary, deliberative, communitarian and pluralistic democracy. But the ideal of e-democracy has not been realized in any of these four levels. The paradox of computer-mediated politics is the gap between the expectations on e-democracy based on technological determinism and the discomforting reality revealed by the literature on the uses of computer network. By review of literature on internet users and survey data, this study attempts to investigate the reality of computer-mediated politics in Korean society in terms of communicator, message, effects, and political culture. First, politicians do not regard cyberspace as interactive channels of political communication but as a means of political campaign. Citizens rarely participate in computer-mediated politics. The relationship between politicians and citizens is maintained as unequitable sender-receiver relations. Fortunately, the political discussion among citizens is very lively in cyberspace. It is expected that the horizontal communication among citizens will contribute to the activation of the vertical communication between politicians and citizens. Second, the messages of computer-mediated political communication show high redundancy of information, low signal-to-noise ratio due to anonymity, and top-down flow of communication. Netizens are suggested to endeavor to enhance the variety and quality of mes-sages. Third, there is little feedback from the side of politicians. We cannot definitely conclude that computer-mediated politics will bring in the changes in the real-world politics. But the on-line activities of civic associations in the 16th general election for lawmakers showed the possibility that cyberspace can affect the electoral process. In order to activate computer-mediated politics, the institutional devices need to be established so that the public opinion in cyberspace can be reflect in the public policy. Finally, the so-called "delay in digital mind" syndrome is wide-spread in our society; that is, the gap is wide between the digital technology and the analogue way of thinking. For example, politician regards political website as show-off devices. Socio-political factors including the absence of public sphere and the authoritarian political culture seem to be in the way of actualization of e-democracy.

This is the study about the impact of anti-homepage on a company image, based on the theory of one way message and two way message effects, which is suggested by the study of Hovland, Lumsdaine & Sheffield. There were four sample groups, and those are positive attitude group, negative attitude group, anti-homepage exposed group, unexposed group of a certain company. Sample group is composed of one hundred and twenty people, thirty people for each group who are chosen by a random way. The components of a company image are estimated by seven points, eight parts that are made by professor Yamaki. Through the dual variation analysis, main effects about past attitude and anti-homepage login are proved to be valid, but there was no mutual effect between past attitude and anti-homepage login. General1y, it is found that as they are more exposed to anti-homepage according to anti-homepage logins, the positive attitude towards the company decreases. After the T test of a sample, the changes of attitude of an affirmative unexposed group (A-1), and those of negative attitude with anti-homepage exposed group (B-2), turned out to be statistically not meaningful. Conclusion is that positive attitude with anti-homepage exposed group lessens positive attitude, on the other hand, positive attitude increases among the negative attitude with only company homepage exposed group.

This study, borrowing Luhmann"s system theory, examines how public relations, concretely press release, affects journalism and how the journalists assess press release. System theory examines how diverse" parts are integrated into the whole and expand to a system. For that reason, an individual phenomenon can be observed and understood only in relation to the whole system. Most empirical studies up to the present in the field of journalism seem to fail in identifying a concrete object of study. A German system theory is proposed here as an alternative approach to the study of journalism. Due to the following three features, system theory can significantly contribute to journalism research. ㆍConceptions of system theory makes it easier to mark a clear boundary of study in mass communication and/or journalism. It may contribute to acknowledge the study of journalism and/or mass communication as a legitimate independent discipline in the future. ㆍ System theory-based research can integrate the traditional theories like, for instance, the "agenda-setting function of the mass media" and the "news value study" into an extensive theoretical framework. ㆍ System theory-based research accepts the relation between reality and mass media reality as a centrally related problem. Understanding reporting as an active construction of reality, it refuses the traditional viewpoint in communication research in which mass media are described only as accomplishment of the wide copy-function. If journalism, thanks to system theory-based approach, can be identified as a concrete research subject, the basis for the classification between public relations, advertising, art and non-professional communication can be worked out. Namely, the subject matter of journalism research cannot be treated equal or be interchanged with mass media and publicity. This research assumes that journalists depend on press release because of the time limit and heavy work loads and that journalists evaluate their dependence on press release as reasonable, resulting in the similar reflection of press release in news writing among the dailies. Accordingly, five research questions were suggested. RQ1 : How much portion of the press release is reflected on the financial pages of the 6 dailies? RQ2 : How do journalists evaluate the "self-related factors" and "other-related factors" from diverse environmental factors which affect their speech and reporting? RQ3 : How do journalists in the economy department of the 6 dailies assess the quantity and quality of the press release from diverse organizations? RQ4 : How do journalists assess their degree of (in) dependence in the reporting process? RQ5 : How do journalists in the economy department of the 6 dailies judge the possible consequences of the use of press release? And what are the grounds for their judgment? This study was conducted in two ways; content analysis and questionnaire. To identify the influence of press release on news reporting, the news items of the economy department of the 6 dailies were analyzed. To identify the journalists" attitude to press release and their motivation to use it, several questions were asked to 40 journalists who cover the Ministry of Finance and Economy, the Finance Supervisory Commission and the Korea Stock Exchange. News items of the 6 dailies - Chosun Ilbo, Chungang Ilbo, Dong-A Ilbo, Hankook Ilbo, Hangyoreh and Kyunghyang Shinmun - were analyzed from 24 Apr. 2000 to 29 Apr. 2000. Two journalists who are independent from the 6 dailies were classified into "press release news" and "gather news". After that, the size of the "press release items" and the size of the "whole page" were measured by the units of column l

The purpose of this study is to examine the concept of interactivity and the actual use of interactive options in Internet newspapers. More specifically, the study investigates the actual availability of interactive mechanism and the level of interactivity in Korean Internet news-papers, focusing on the interactive options and messages. The view applied in this study roughly corresponds with the term"s definition by Rafaeli (1998). Interactivity is a process-related, variable characteristic of communication. Interactive communication requires that later messages take into account earlier messages that preceded them, as an iterative process which leads to jointly produced meaning. To obtain systematic data on interactive options and the level of interactivity of Korean newspapers on the World Wide Web, 10 major newspapers, including Chosun Ilbo, JoongAng Ilbo and Dong-a Ilbo, were examined by a content analysis in June of 2000. A list from the Web site of the Korea Press Foundation was used as sampling frame. After a pretest of 20 days from June 1 to June 20, the final version of a coding scheme was prepared. Like face-to-face communication, Internet newspapers have the great potential to increase the interactivity in Journalism. Though it is clear that the mere availability of tools dose not answer the. questions about exactly how much interactivity communication occurs among readers and journalists, it is still necessary condition for the initiation of interactive communication. In that respect, Internet newspapers can use such interactive tools as e-mail, chatting rooms, discussion forums, online polls and surveys. and bulletin boards. Findings of this study, however, reveal that many Korean newspapers do not fully exploit the opportunities and advantages offered by the new medium. While most Korean newspapers are represented on the Internet, many of them have been found to lack such sophisticated interactive tools as discussion forums and chatting rooms. Furthermore, the level of interactivity of them was lower, measured by the number and proportion of interactive messages as a percentage of the total messages. Nonetheless, it would not be fair to conclude that Korean newspapers have totally ignored the Internet"s potential to increase the interactivity, For example, all the 10 newspapers have provided E-mail as a tool that readers can use for interactive communication with journalists or other users. In conclusion, while the Internet has the great potential to increase the interactivity in journalism, many Korean newspapers have not fully used the opportunities. As a result, there is a need for serious deliberation on ways to encourage interactive communication, and the examination of interactivity in this study provided only a starting point for further such studies.

The first edition has a special role for national newspapers in Korea. Comparing first edition with each other is ordinary and formal practice in the newsroom. It is a journalistic routine. The assumption of this study is that the routine of comparing first editions among newspapers make the news content and style similar. This assumption is based on the "inter-media agenda setting research" : that is, whether the news agenda of one medium, for example wire services or NY Times, follows that of one another. Previous qualitative and quantitative research indicates such a pattern might occur systematically. Most previous studies used broad topic categories to detect gross similarities. The primary purpose of this study is to explore whether this routine is at work in inducing the similarity of the news coverage among national newspapers. Specifically, this study focus on factors contributing to the standardization process by this routine of comparing first edition. In-depth interviews with reporters and content analysis comparing the first edition and the last edition of nine national newspapers were conducted to test for "standardization effect" of this routine. The result show that the study showed the main role of first edition in each news room is to monitor each other. Eventually it puts news coverage in tune with each other. So, reporters described the first edition as "test edition". Content analysis proved the "standardization effect". The change rate between first and last edition is 42.7%. This figure implies the role of the "test-edition". The mode of "standardization" could be classified into several types. First, when one newspaper gets a scoop, other newspapers copy the scoop without additional investigation. As a result, the content coverage was similar. Second, standardization occurred when minor newspapers followed the values, points-of-view, lead stories, and headlines of the majors. When major newspapers covered the specific event, minors pursued the story. This study suggests that the routine of comparing first edition is related to the environment of the Korean newspaper industry. Unlike the inter-media agenda setting study in America that showed the dominant agenda setter, AP or NY Times, this study show inter-dependency among similar national newspapers in the points-of-view, editing style, and target audiences. This represents the system of the Korean newspaper industry.
