This paper aims to define American nature writing, describe its conventions, explore its most common themes, and give a brief history of it. Nature writing in American literature has denoted a particular form of prose which combines objective descriptions of nature and personal meditations stimulated by it. This type of essay, typified by the work of Henry David Thoreau, is distinctively American, because it derives from the experience of early American settlers who found themselves between the needs to account for the features of their natural surroundings and the promptings to describe personal impressions of them. Characterized by the spatial movement of pastoralism from civilization to nature, the plot of nature writing involves the excursion to wilderness and then coming back and expressing that experience. Born out of reverence for the natural world, nature writing seeks to discover how nature affects personal life as well as to learn about and from nature. It is also concerned with man's proper place in nature, the interconnections of all life forms in it, the recognition of environmental problems and the promotion of ecological consciousness. American nature writing is also sensitive to the epistemological problems in seeing and expressing nature, simultaneously showing a desire for accurate description of nature and a strong doubt of gaining its whole picture. Nature writing emerged in response to the industrial revolution of the late 18th century. Incorporating into its ever expanding tradition such various kinds of writing as natural history, spiritual autobiography, and travel writing, nature writing has grown into an important cultural form of writing while serving as a clarion call to revive the damaged ecosystem. In accommodating the widespread concern about our global environment, nature writing now establishes itself as an original, significant, and popular American genre which produces a large number of distinctive and talented authors.

In Korean culture, 'Nature' has been recognized as a type of personality. This attitude towards nature can be applied to the 'Sea'. The sea has indivisible relations with the fundamental way of being. Nevertheless the sea has not yet been researched in this aspect, and, as a result, the sea in Korean literature remains unknown. This study deals with the relations between 'Sea' and 'Life', focusing on Shimcheong-gean, one of the most well-known classics in Korea. Eventually it will illuminate in Korean literature the sea which has been so far unknown to the public. For the purposes of this study, the sea in Shimcheong-gean and Big Theft Gumuni has not been researched as a literary tool of maximizing Shimcheong's filial piety. The text has been univocally understood, highlighting her love for her father at the cost of her own life. At the same time, it obscures the unreasonable demand of life on the living. The result is that criticism of reality has disappeared, and an image of moral and Confucian humanity remains. The abnormal has taken the place of the normal, and this has been gradually accepted as insignificant. The sea, Indangsoo, was the one which accepted the resentment of the poor who had been exploited by the northern barbarians[Oranke]. He was also the one who criticized the inhumane environment of sacrificing lives for profits. As shown in the above-mentioned text, the sea from the perspective of life is no longer a meaningless subject. It is a fact of life that many unheeded truths can be rediscovered. The sea has been left alone in a moral world for too long to lose its colorful features and senses. It is not a result of intention, but rather such a routine image of the sea has been too firmly rooted in our minds to recognize something different. Every single substance and essence has been left outt. All aesthetic value of creativity has been hastily defined as the sea itself. Now it is time to find these colorful images of the sea represented in Korean literature. It is time to comprehend the multiplicity of their meaning. Then we can enjoy the secret world through this newly discovered magnifier.

Some think humans are predatory by nature. I cast my vote with those who feel humans take the shape of their culture, and that shifts in culture can occur in rare moments with remarkable speed and vigor. Good design can release humankind from its neurotic relationship to absurd acts of destruction, and aim it toward a destiny that is far more realistic and enduring. But government, ecological enterprises, and environmental organization can't create a sustainable society called an ecological community. It will only come about through the accumulated effects of daily acts of billions of eager participants. To create an enduring society, we will need a system of commerce and production where each and every act is inherently sustainable and restorative. Business will need to integrate economic, biologic, and human systems to create a sustainable method of commerce and should make a great contribution towards founding an ecological community. As hard as we may try to become sustainable on a company-by-company level, we can't fully succeed until the institutions surrounding commerce are redesigned. Just as every act in an industrial society leads to environmental degradation, regardless of intention, we must design a system where the opposite is true, where the natural, everyday acts of work and life accumulate into a better world as a matter of course, not a matter of conscious altruism. Robert Lee Frost made it a fundamental rule to maintain friendly relation with nature in his life. Nature was a mirror reflecting his life and inducing him to harmonize with natural order. In Frost's pastoral poems, simplicity and non-violence are obviously closely related. The optimal pattern of consumption, producing a high degree of human satisfaction by means of a relatively low rate of consumption, allows people to live without great pressure and strain and to fulfill the primary injunction of Buddhist teaching: "Cease to do evil; try to do good." As physical resources are everywhere limited, people satisfying their needs by means of a modest use of resources are obviously less likely to be at each other's throats than people depending upon a high rate of use. Frost chose his pattern of pastoral life to incarnate the thought that human beings can be free and happy only when they live a poor and simple life. We should live in a small way so that we may enjoy our lives. In case of ecological crisis, our work as adaptive human beings must take root on far deeper levels than collective attempts to assuage guilt. Society must recognize that ecological principles apply absolutely to human survival, and that if we are to long endure as a world culture, or as a group of local cultures, we will have to incorporate ecological thinking into every aspect of our mores, patterns of living, and most particularly, our economic institutions.

This paper aims to define "wilderness," or nature of the 17th century America and take account of its development. The New England puritans in The 17th century considered their nature or environment as different from that of contemporary Europeans. They interpreted it in terms of their religious doctrine(Puritanism) and their own experiences and coined wilderness which was an allusion from the Bible. So, for them, nature was not only the basic source of economical wealth but also the basis of their religious life. Especially, the early 17th century puritans, including William Bradford or John Winthrop considered their nature as a haven or refuge from Old World's moral depravity. Furthermore, they thought and believed that their physical and psychological hardships in the New Worlds were just God's testing of themselves ― a necessary prelude to everlasting salvation. During the latter half of the 17th century, coping with new changing social situations, they added a new interpretation to wilderness. It was emphasized on as a testing place for their faith through their "jeremiads" in which puritan divines warned God's anger against their increasing pursuit of economical wealth and physical pleasure. Newly emerging "Indian Captivity Narratives" played an important role in restoring their faith and maintaining New England as a firm religious community. They could confirm God's anger and grace in Indian captivity narratives and wilderness as His tribulation. However, in Indian captivity narratives, wilderness and Indians in it played an important part like a kind of converter. Wilderness converted Europeans into new Americans. In it they could form their own identities fitted into the newly founded community. In this context, for Americans, wilderness or nature is neither the object of economical exploitation nor aesthetical contemplation. Americans have given some unique sense to their nature: for them, it is the place of religious worship and the place creating their American ego. It is in this sense that nature or environment is very important in studying American literature such as Cooper's, Hawthorne's, Transcendentalists', and Twain's.

This paper is a study of nature appeared in "the Mountain" and "the Field", Hyo-seok Yi's short stories. These two works are very important because of showing the most impressive scenes expressing the love of nature, and are known that they have a common theme, 'a praise of nature' or 'a praise of the natural life'. But natures in those two works have important differences in characters. So in this paper, I'll investigate those differences and try to understand the meaning of each work' nature has. Conclusion : Nature and the natural life in "the Mountain" are plain and simple ones. But those in "the Field" are stereo and complex ones. These differences are caused by the other differences in relations of the social reality and nature, of the social reality and the hero in those two works. Nature in "the Mountain" is separated from the social reality, but the one in "the Field" is connected with it. The hero in "the Mountain" is separated from the social reality, but the one in "the Field" is connected with it. So, the hero in "the Mountain" starts a new life in harmony with nature, the hero in "the Field" only remains in nature with trouble about human nature and social reality. But each case can be interpreted to propose a methode to overcome troubles of humane and social reality. From this point of view, "the Mountain" can be interpreted to present an alternative plan about life style severing the social reality, "the Field" can be interpreted to propose to wait and prepare for future with a wish about the better world.

This paper arranges about the critical comments about ecological literature that rise up in 1990's. The interest about ecological literature and criticism rise in a short time. So the side effects are born. For instance, because of epidemic discussion, the ecological literature and criticism have meaningless, superficial contents. Ecology walked the way that imported trend of literature have walked. And have the risk of disappearance. This paper point out about it.

It was after Thoreau's nature writing was reinterpreted and revived that more profound insight and more powerful vision were found in his works than in those of Emerson and any other American writers. The revival of the green Thoreau is closely related to the rise of the environmental literary studies or ecocriticism. A significant parallel between American and Korean Thoreau studies can be observed. It can be found that the number of articles published in Korea on Thoreau has sharply risen since The Association of Studies in Literature and Environment (ASLE) and ASLE-Korea were established. It was not only in the quantity of the research that Thoreau studies in Korea have made a remarkable progress. Thoreau studies seemed to become more appealing and powerful with recent ecological approaches. In particular, Kang Yong-ki's "Thoreau's Nature Overlapped with Culture and Its Ecocritical Implication" and Shin Moonsu's "Ecological Thinking in Henry David Thoreau's Walden" trigger more sensitive and significant ecocritical debates, requiring a reconsideration of ecocritical questions posed by Thoreau's texts. It can be a significant contribution of deconstructive reading to Walden studies to discover the discrepancy between Walden Pond itself and the Walden Pond described in the text with human language. Accepting the discrepancy without reservations, however, may lead to losing sight of the dynamic flow toward nature as well as the constant tension between human motivation and nature found in the text of Walden. It is important to note that the text of Walden does not merely demonstrate the discrepancy and overlapping area between nature and human perspectives, but instead makes strenuous attempts to reach real nature, even while conceding that this quest can be made only by man, through his language.
