This paper is an attempt to understand Moon In Su"s poems from ecological viewpoint. Though he can not be called as a conscious ecologist, we can notice his serious and profound ecological concerns in his poems. His concern can be classified into the following three types; eco-environmental concern, eco-life concern, and eco-ontological concern. The concrete content of his eco-environmental concern in his poems seems to be related to the nature-directed attitude. "Jungsun Poems" and "Donggang Poems" are the examples of it, in which he reveals the love and longing of pure and uncontaminated state of human spirit. Also he expresses his expectations to the purification of human spirit through natural purity when humans attempt to follow the nature itself. His eco-life concern reflects his ecological vision which gets away from human-centered attitude maintained since modern age. The integrated attitude which does not separate human from nature arises from the belief that man is a part of nature. Additionally, this attitude is related to his love toward the traditional life and culture and its restoration. He put his primary task on the restoration of admiration to the harmony between man and nature. His ecological concern does not restricted to the field of natural environment and human life. The category can be expanded to the ontological area. The fundamental questions can be broadened to the area of the existence itself. Fundamental questions about ontological controversy and his understanding about ontological circulation in his poems are concrete examples of it. This attitude arises from his thought that ecological harmony is established upon its own value and we need to accept the natural procedures. These diverse concerns will ultimately deepen our insight on ecology. Additionally this will enrich the meaning of ontology itself - in other words, its denotated and connotated meanings. This is one of the reason why we look forward to his future poetic career.

With the poetic cognizance after 90s being centralized in ordinariness, the ecological recognition has largely spread out the realms of poetic imagination and of sensitive faculty, having been explored profoundly as an innermost question. In the recent times, the poetic current that has been concentrated on the problems of the urban and secular culture is, however, moving to the nature-orientedness, and as poets themselves are returning to the nature-friendly life, the tendency that they 'practice' the ecological cognizance in a positive way. not merely as a poetic theme. The poetry of Hong, Shin-sun may well be given attention as poems which come along with these poetic appreciation and practice. His poems, initiating from the early ones baptized with modernism in 90s showed a few steps of transfiguration, engaged with the historical and realistic convulsions, however, the Buddhistic concern and the ecological awareness that had been traversing deeply his poems were maintained ceaselessly from his early ones, such as “Recurrence”, “Loa tzu” until the serial work of “Mind Scripture”. The 'Recurrence consciousness' toward nature and the speculation of abulia and self-renunciation, both, emphasized by Buddhism and Taoism have been deepened through his poetic work of 70s and 80s focused on the quest of the times, and penetrating the pursuit of the introspection on the 'civilized life' and the humanistic prospective. The ecological recognition coming across his poems is manifestly caught in the 'civilized life' and the 'the ruins consciousness of times' revealed in his 6th poetry, For Self-Portrait published in 2002. Especially, the serial work of “Mind Scripture” alludes that the practice of ecological living that extricates civilized human from his self-centered avarice is the very future that we must return to. His poems that have accentuated the Buddhistic 'being unavaricious' and 'nonpossesion' for the sake of future of mankind should come into the spot light as a poetic work that shows a significant ecological awareness in the modern history of Korean poems.

To solve a environmental matter basically must set up new sense of value. Must comprehend the fact which modern time human being oneself is an important cause. There is basic cause of environmental matter to the place which the human being becomes subject and governs the nature as the object. First, We must throw away the thought that the human being is subject, and live with nature. Second, We must have the recognition that nature isn"t machine but an organic body which is living. Third, We must refuse a production first attention view of the world and must aim an entropy view of the world. An entropy view of the world refuses all of production and development. Relating with this three branch side, when human being sets up the new sense of value with nature, will be the possibility of searching the ultimate solution against a environmental matter.

'Anthropocentrism' that mankind has looked themselves as a center of all-creatures as an advance guard point of capitalism has put Nature on a subordinate rank, and destructed ecological system under the name of civilization incessantly. Accordingly, it is the first task to correct wrong view point of mankind on modernized civilization for the recovery of ecological system. In this respect, this study is to analyse eco-poetical symbolic meaning of animals as a archetype of mankind poetized in the German Heramnn Hesse's novels, lyrics and fairy stories and Korean Jeong Ho-Seung's lyrics and 'fairy stories for the adult'. Especially, it is very notable that these poets express a will to recover pure and innocent archetype of lost mankind because of fetishism in the modernized industrial age through the form of a fairy story. Hesse criticizes 'development concept' rooted in nature-destructive civilization through paradoxical and provocative poetic words in “City”and “Bird” etc. On the other hand, even though Jeong sneers the men who are to be inferior to a bird and a dog through ironical words in several poems such as “Fortune-telling Bird”, his poetic selves personified animals such as bird, butterfly, chestnut-worm and shrimps etc. in the most of poems and fairy stories try to transcend limits of absurd modern mankind who has an egoistic and anti-ecological attitude toward Nature. Above all, "bird" has a role of the herald who has a desire to recover archetype of mankind and turn it into a warm-hearted one through an endless love.

Although there are many aspects to the debate among philosophers about the moral status of animals, at its centre is the issue of whether it is acceptable to treat non-human creatures essentially as resources for human use. Another way to put the issue is to say that it has to do with who qualifies as a member of the moral community. The moral community can be said to consist of all those beings whose interests should receive the same consideration as our similar interests. Different philosophers have argued the issue from different ethical perspectives, and even philosophers arguing from the same general perspective may disagree with each other in their conclusions. Several reasons can be identified to account for the reluctance of many environmentalists to embrace animal liberation. One is a belief that we would be obligated to rescue wild animals from harm, in violation of the predator-prey relation. A second reason is a desire on the part of many environmentalists for continued intervention in wild nature in the form of hunting and fishing. Third, there is the belief that maintaining ecosystems in a flourishing state sometimes requires us to reduce animal populations by killing some of their members. The first reason-that we would be obligated to rescue wild animals from harm caused by predators or cold or disease, or by other natural factors-typically involves a misunderstanding of what is intended by the attribution of tights to animals. Regan and other liberationists deny that animals" having rights normally entails any duty on our part to rescue them from non-moral sources of harm. Even a utilitarian liberationist is unlikely to advocate acts that would significantly degrade ecosystems. The second and third reasons have more bite, however. Liberationists are normally strongly opposed to the killing of wild animals, except in self-defence. Not all environmentalists are in favour of hunting and fishing; still, many consider these activities to be compatible with a proper attitude toward the environment and see no reason to abandon them, even when they are not needed for subsistence or for management purposes. Managing ecosystems to promote such values as diversity, integrity, stability, and beauty frequently involves killing [culling] animals. While liberation activists typically oppose measures that harm individual animals, at least some philosophers argue that such harm can sometimes be justified even from an animal-rights perspective. The thesis that liberationists cannot be environmentalists rests on a perceived incompatibility between promoting the good of ecosystems considered as wholes and promoting or ensuring the good of their individual members. The contrary thesis, that liberationists can indeed be environmentalists, rests to a large extent on the idea that the good of individual wild animals cannot be divorced from the existence of flourishing environments that allow them to exercise their natural powers and live their own lives, as free as possible from human interference.

  7. [국내논문]   The Organic Community Has Always Gone - F. R. Leavis on Modernity

    TaeChul Kim
    문학과 환경: Literature and environment v.5 no.1 ,pp. 145 - 175 , 2006 , 1599-7650 ,

    초록

In Leavis's historiography of modernity, the primary concern is with the soul of man under technologico-Benthamite modernity. In turn, it awakens him to the loss of the organic community and the importance of the great seventeenth-century changes, to which literary language have borne witness when the Shakespearean language of enactment has given way to the later use of language as statement in the course of modernity. The modern age, for Leavis, has witnessed values collapsing, standards lost, and an educated public dispersing, in its change from organic integrity to mechanical disintegration. The organic, now in his ecological vision, signifies various kinds of lost continuity which he specifies as a main phenomenon of modernity, in an intrinsic relation of men to one another and to the environment and to past generations as well. He sees modernity as the process in which an organised modern state has replaced the England of the organic community, for it is mechanised civilisation, or rather the machinery of civilisation, whose efficiency the age regards as the ultimate value. A consistent perspective underlying this historiography is the contrast between organic popular culture and mechanical sophisticated civilisation, which, in effect, leads Leavis to rewrite the history of English literature as a discontinuity, with Shakespeare on the other side of modernity and the modern conventional un-or anti-Shakespearean on this side. To cope with the contemporary stage of modernity, however, Leavis has recourse to living language which, allowing us to catch a glimpse of the lost organic community and bearing all the traces of ever-changing modernity, still remains a cultural life, a living creative continuity. In the collaborative creativity of language as a main source of living tradition with all triumphant modernity, he finds another possibility for the wholeness of human life lost irrecoverably with the advance of fragmentising modernity and destroyed irrevocably by the machinery of civilisation. In this way, his vision turns out to be an expression of his exclusive concern with the present. But his intervention in modernity defies any simplification, as his present-centred project of a synthetical vision betrays an unwitting affinity with aesthetic modernity or rather the glorification of the present as a general feature of modernity as such.

Despite the very strong history of representations of Nature in Canadian literature, very little in the way of Canadian ecocriticism has appeared. There are several reasons for this, some of which have to do with Canada"s history as a colonized nation. By 2006, though, Canadians may rightly say, "Nous sommes arriv?." The sudden interest, not only within Canada but well outside of the nation"s boundaries, suggests a bright future for Canadian ecocriticism. It is, without a doubt, very fertile ground for publishing these days.
