    Drilling is one of the most important machining operations in manufacture process. When drilling process is applied, unexpected burrs will be formed on the surface of workpiece. Even a small burr can cause unwanted problems, resulting in low quality products. In order to get better drilled parts, it is very important to know characteristics of burr formation and to remove the burr from the drilled surface with machining process. In this study, magnetic abrasive polishing (MAP) was used to research the deburring factors of magnesium alloy. Moreover, design of experiments was performed to evaluate parameters' effect on the MAP process. As a result, it was seen that the MAP was useful to remove the burrs on the workpiece without damage from its original surface.

    In this paper it was suggested the machining method that can improve machining accuracy and reduce the machining time applying the formed tools based on the rotor shape feature to finishing machining for efficient machining of asymmetric rotors. For machining the complicated asymmetric rotor profile, machining area is divided and formed tools are manufactured based on the rotor feature., and the efficient machining method of screw motor was proposed using the formed tools and four axis machining devices. With the suggested machining method, machining time could be reduced compared to the general end mill machining method, and the machining errors of the proposed method could be within the allowable tolerance of the product so as to carry out the precise machining.

    An efficient look-ahead algorithm to generate velocity profiles is presented in this paper. Algorithm allows for a nonzero starting point velocity and end point velocity of every line segment to increase machining productivity. The paper considers the intelligence of look-ahead to achieve faster machining speed, along with required accuracy. Speed limitation of a specific axis and the direction change of an axis are newly added to the constraints of the velocity profile problem. This paper solves graphically the problem of generating velocity profiles and derives the equations for representing the velocity profile. A method to manage the look-ahead buffer is also proposed. To generate velocity profiles using the look-ahead buffer, three phases are proposed. Phase 1 determines the velocity conditions such as the maximum velocity, starting point velocity and end point velocity. In phase 2, velocity profiles are generated independently. Phase 3 handles the change of the start or end point velocity. This phase 3 is repeated until all adjacent point velocities are the same. The proposed method was utilized in the manufacturing field to engrave aluminum tire molds. It was demonstrated that this method contributes to an increase of the machining accuracy and a reduction of the production time.

    In this paper, numerical aspects of a sensitivity control for the semi-active suspension system with a magnetorheological (MR) damper are investigated. A 2-dof quarter-car model together with a 6th order polynomial model for the MR damper are considered. For the purpose of suppressing the vertical acceleration of the sprung-mass, the square of the vertical acceleration is defined as a cost function and the current input to the MR damper is adjusted in the fashion that the current is updated in the negative gradient of the cost function. Also, for improving the ride comfort, a weighted absolute velocity of the sprung-mass is added to the control law. The implementation of the proposed algorithm requires only the measurement of the relative displacement of the suspension deflection. The local stability of the equilibrium point of the closed loop nonlinear system is proved by investigating the eigenvalues of the linearized one. Through simulations, the passive suspension, the skyhook control, and the proposed sensitivity control are compared.

    Accurate load sensing of a manipulator becomes increasingly important in performing various tasks involving contact with an environment. Most of the research has been focused on improving the hardware of a force/torque sensor. The torque sensors for a manipulator suffer from crosstalk, which is difficult to compensate for even with sophisticated calibration. This research proposed a novel calibration method composed of two steps. Through the primary calibration, the torque sensor output can be related to the joint torques. The secondary calibration, which is based on a virtual load, is conducted to compensate for the crosstalk of a torque sensor. The virtual load is obtained from the sensed joint torques and manipulator configuration. Using the proposed calibration method, the external load acting on the end-effector of a manipulator can be accurately measured even with relatively low-quality torque sensors. The experimental results showed that the error in the load sensing was significantly reduced by the proposed calibration method.

    In general, the position control of electro hydrostatic actuator(EHA) systems is difficult because of the large variation of the effective bulk modulus of the working fluid, which is due to the absence of a heat exchanger like a reservoir tank, the friction between the cylinder and piston, and the external disturbance force. Moreover, it is difficult to identify the values of the effective bulk modulus and friction. In this paper, the variation of the effective bulk modulus, friction, and external disturbance are considered as uncertainties of EHA systems. To solve the problems due to these system uncertainties, an adaptive back-stepping control scheme with fuzzy neural networks(FNNs) is proposed. The effectiveness of the adaptive back-stepping control(ABSC) system with FNNs was compared with those of the standard back-stepping control(BSC) system and the ABSC system through computer simulation.

    This paper presents a wavelet multiresolution analysis based process fault detection algorithm to improve the accuracy of fault detection. Using Haar wavelet, coefficients that well reflect the process condition are selected and Hotelling's T2 control chart that uses the selected coefficients is constructed for assessing the process condition. To enhance the overall efficiency and accuracy of fault detection, the following two steps are suggested: First, a denoising method that is based on wavelet transform and soft-thresholding. Second, coefficient selection methods that use the difference in the variance. For performance evaluation, various types of abnormal process conditions are simulated and the proposed algorithm is compared with other methodologies. Also, We apply the proposed algorithm to the industrial data of the dry etching process, which is one of the FAB processes. Our method has a better fault-detection performance for various sections and various changes in mean than other methods.

    Edge detection is always an interesting field for researchers in the area of artificial intelligence, including machine visions and robotics. In the context of tactile sensors, many studies have been conducted on edge-identification algorithms. These investigations often use high-resolution tactile sensor arrays to track an edge of a large object. In this work, edge identification is examined in which a coarse-resolution tactile sensor, specif., a 2 ${\times}$ 2 array, is used to detect and track edges of a small object. To simplify the control, we control the sensor just in 2D and in just one direction at a time. We propose two methods to solve this problem: a scanning method, of which the principle of operation is similar to that of a scanner, and an edge-following method that can make the sensor follow the boundary of the object. The flowchart of each method will be presented in detail in this paper. Some simulations in MATLAB, including four shapes, viz., square, triangle, ellipse, and hexagon, have been executed to verify our proposal. A comparison and a critique of the two methods are also presented for improving the methods.

    This paper presents a Hybrid filter based Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) scheme for a mobile robot to compensate for the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) based SLAM errors inherently caused by its linearization process. The proposed Hybrid filter consists of a Radial Basis Function (RBF) and EKF which is a milestone for SLAM applications. A mobile robot autonomously explores the environment by interpreting the scene, building an appropriate map, and localizing itself relative to this map. A probabilistic approach has dominated the solution to the SLAM problem, which is a fundamental requirement for mobile robot navigation. The proposed approach, based on a Hybrid filter, has some advantages in handling a robotic system with nonlinear dynamics because of the learning property of the neural networks. The simulation and experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm comparing with an EKF based SLAM and Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP) method.

    A Virtual Proving Ground (VPG) is a vehicle simulation environment used for evaluating durability of the suspension elements. Among the components that comprise the VPG system, the tire model with its complex nonlinear characteristics has most significant impact on the credibility of the estimated durability. This research proposes a method for generating an equivalent road profile as a way to compensate for the limits involved in modeling details of the tire characteristics. The method first identifies the frequency response function from the road heights to the spindle forces, which would contain rich information on the tire's effect on the vehicle dynamics. Then it back-calculates a road profile using this model and the spindle force measurement. Finally the solution is updated iteratively until it yields the spindle forces close to their measured values. Using the proposed method, an equivalent road profile was successfully generated from a spindle force measurement collected from a physical durability test. In order to investigate validity of the proposed method, durability analysis was performed for a suspension component - a lower control arm. From the preliminary VPG simulation results, it was confirmed that the estimated fatigue life agreed well with the estimation based upon the force measurement.
