    Recounts the life and professional achievements of Anthony Schuyler Arrott. Arrott discovered point singularities in liquid crystals in 1970. He applied the insights he and Press obtained to magnetism, where he demonstrated the utility of thinking in terms of curls and divergences to describe magnetic confi gurations. He called attention to the swirls that had been unnoticed for 40 years in the basic Bloch domain-wall configuration in rectangular parallelepipeds introduced in 1935 by Landau & Lifshitz. In 2004, working with Riccardo Hertel, Arrott found the connection between the magnetization pattern in an ellipsoid with three unequal axes, calculated using finite elements, and the Landau-Lifshitz pattern in a rectangular parallelepiped. In 2016 he showed that the Landau-Lifshitz domain configuration evolves, upon reducing an applied magnetic field, through the formation of an extended octupole of magnetic charge density in a helical pattern, connecting the swirl on one surface to the swirl on an opposite surface. Since 1954 Arrott has published over 200 journal articles and several reviews of his wide range of studies. Arrott was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society in 1969 and of the Royal Society of Canada in 1983. He received the Gold Medal for Physical Sciences from the Science Council of British Columbia in 1982 and the Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Physics from the Canadian Association of Physicists in 1986. In 1988-1989 he served as president of the Canadian organization, Science for Peace. He is currently affiliated with Virginia Commonwealth University (since 2006) and Morgan State University, Baltimore (since 2013), in addition to Simon Fraser University. His current research is on micromagnetic analyses of three-dimensional patterns of ferromagnetism obtained using a magneto-optical microscope from Rudolf Shaefer and simulation tools from Michael R. Scheinfein.

    We used micromagnetic simulations to investigate the effects of electromagnetic interference (EMI) caused by electrostatic discharge on the stability of tunneling magnetoresistive (TMR) read heads based on International Electrotechnical Commission standard 61000-4-2. In simulation, EMI was applied to TMR heads between 0.1 cm and 2 cm from the source, and magnetization fluctuations and induced magnetic noise were evaluated. Although EMI can induce spin-transfer torque in the heads, it causes little change in the magnetization orientation and no noticeable influence on the readback signal or signal-to-noise ratio of the heads.

    A new, fine-magnetic-particle detection system is proposed that uses a fundamental-mode orthogonal fluxgate (FM-OFG) gradiometer positioned on a Permalloy shielding disk. The Permalloy disk reduces the gradiometer sensitivity to magnetic field interference, thus enhancing the sensor resolution and measurement signal-to-noise ratio. The proposed detection system configuration offers an inexpensive and compact alternative to commercially available SQUID sensor magnetic contaminant detection systems. Numerical analysis was conducted to investigate the effective shielding area of the Permalloy disk. Experiments with a 10 cm diameter Permalloy disk showed that the FM-OFG gradiometer uniform magnetic field sensitivity was reduced by a factor of 0.25 at a 10 mm sensor baseline. Detection of a steel ball of 120 μm diameter was achievable under 10 Hz magnetic field interference, generating 150 nT/m signal peak-to-peak in the gradiometer output, where the noise peak-to-peak was reduced to 46.8 nT/m. The signal-to-noise ratio of the 120 μm steel ball detection signal was increased by a factor of 4.6 when using the Permalloy disk.

    The development of spintronic devices is the most promising and interesting way to improve conventional electronics. They will allow us to continue diminishing the devices' dimensions as well as optimizing the energy requirements for their operation. Perovskites stand out among materials that could be used in those devices because their variety permits combinations of optical, electronic, and magnetic properties. The bulk double perovskite Sr 2FeMoO6 (SFMO) is a half-metallic system that has become very attractive after the Kobayashi report about their high Curie temperature (about 470 K). SFMO has been used to build solid oxide fuel cell electrodes, but this compound could be used as a laminar system in the development of spintronic devices because of its high spin polarization. This proposal has been motivated by the exploitation of the magnetoresistive response in manganite applications and the reported experimental work on perovskite thin films. The inclusion of SFMO laminar systems in spintronic devices could affect magnetic-tunnel-junction-like devices. From a crystalline SFMO model system, thin slabs were excised and a supercell was built for each system, setting the appropriate initial separation between image slabs along the [001] direction. The geometry optimization and magnetic and electronic properties (density of states, band structures, and magnetic moment distribution) were calculated in the density functional theory scheme using the local density approximation with the Hubbard parameter (LDA + U).

    Fe-Si-Al-Cr flaky particles, as soft magnetic materials with high microwave permeability, can be used for microwave absorption. In order to enhance the permeability of the materials, some Si atoms were replaced by Cr atoms. Fe 75 Si 15-x Al 10 Cr x (x = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8) flake-shaped particles were prepared by crushing ingots by ball milling. X-ray diffraction shows that the phase of all alloys is that of a α-Fe matrix. Scanning electron microscopy shows that the particles were transformed into a flaky shape, and the average aspect ratio (width/thickness) increased with x. The mean diameters of the flaky particles increased from 31.1 μm to 230 μm. Mössbauer spectroscopy shows that the peak intensity ratio of I 2,5 /I 3,4 of a sextet increases from 2.90 to 3.3 when x increases from 0 to 6, since Fe-Si-Al-Cr flaky particles have a stronger tendency to possess a planar anisotropy than Fe-Si-Al particles, which increases magnetic permeability. Saturation magnetization (M s ) of the particles increased from 127 emu/g to 144 emu/g with x increasing from 0 to 2, but there is no significant change of M s when x increases from 2 to 6. The microwave permeability dispersion spectra were measured in the frequency range between 0.5 and 8 GHz. Thus, high permeability of Fe-Si-Al-Cr alloys can be obtained when some Si atoms are replaced by Cr atoms, which leads to a change of planar anisotropy and M s .

    The advantages of ferrofluids in microfluidic lab-on-a-chip applications include remote control of the fluid flow within the chips, e.g., mixing of the species using an external uniform magnetic field. Hence, three-stream flow systems consisting of a ferrofluid core clad by two streams of diamagnetic silicone oil were studied. The instability of the ferrofluid, subjected to an external uniform magnetic field, was also studied. When the strength of this magnetic field was increased to a critical value, the ferrofluid was spread toward the silicone oil and a transient instability developed at the ferrofluid-silicone oil interface. Further increasing magnetic field resulted in periodic instability structures and permanent instability. The effect of magnetic field strength, flow rate, and flow rate ratio were determined. With a higher flow rate ratio, the permanent instability was observed only at the larger magnetic field strength. Our modeling results were consistent with these experimental results. Our work shows that an external uniform magnetic field of only a few millitesla can lead to instability and mixing, thus it is relevant to mixing in practical microfluidic devices.

    The calculation and graphic imaging of magnetic charge density provides fresh insights into old problems in micromagnetics. (1) The full saturation magnetization M s of polycrystalline iron can be used in a transformer when magnetic charge at the grain boundaries suppresses the adverse effects of anisotropy. A single domain wall separates two regions of opposite magnetization |M| = M s in toroidal geometry. This is a three-dimensional expression of the ripple effect, long known in polycrystalline thin films of Permalloy. (2) Helical patterns of M result from interaction of regions of opposite magnetic charge developed by the introduction of some ∇ · M when the exchange energy primarily invokes ∇ × M to accommodate to the boundary conditions set by geometry and surface charge density n · M. The helical structures resolve 40-year-old mysteries in the appearance of periodic stripe domains associated with the propagation of edge solitons in a hexagonal [1 1 1] oriented iron whisker.
