    Abstract. We report a new class of MEMS resonant potential sensor based on the mode localization effect using a 3-degree-of-freedom (DoF) electrically weakly coupled resonator system. As opposed to previously reported electrically coupled 2DoF mode-localized resonant sensors, it can be shown in theory that the 3DoF structure has an improved sensitivity without sacrificing signal transduction, in addition to a reduced nonideal effect with regard to the vibration amplitudes and the motional currents. Experimentally, it has also been shown that several orders of magnitude higher sensitivity can be achieved compared to frequency shift and 2DoF mode-localized sensor. In the best case, we are able to demonstrate over 4 orders of magnitude improvement in sensitivity compared to frequency shift as an output signal. Compared to current state-of-the art 2DoF mode-localized sensor, the highest sensitivity improvement is over 123 times. An estimation of the noise floor of the sensor is 614 μV / √ Hz for potential sensing, or an equivalent 57.6 e / √ Hz for charge sensing, and a dynamic range of 66.3 dB can be achieved. Furthermore, two different approaches for detection were investigated, perturbing the stiffness in the form of either an axial electrostatic force or a change in electrostatic spring. We were able to demonstrate that the approach of changing electrostatic spring is more sensitive than its counterpart.

    Abstract. The inline determination of process and product parameters is of great help for the evaluation and optimization of new procedures. Therefore, an ultrasound process tomography system has been developed, which enables the imaging of the local filler distribution in plastic melts. The objects investigated were extruded rods made of polypropylene (PP) with radial filler gradients. During extrusion, sound velocity and attenuation of the plastic melt were determined and processed via a modified reconstruction algorithm according to Radon transform into 2-D sectional images. Despite the challenges of higher attenuation and impedance mismatch of 60 mm filled PP melt compared to water, the resulting images are of good quality. An important factor for the image quality after tomographic reconstruction is the opening angle of the used ultrasound transducers. Furthermore, a simulation environment was developed in Matlab, which serves as a testing platform for the measurement system.

    Abstract. Custom-fit communication systems are key elements in modern cyber-physical sensor systems. Therefore a wireless communication system (WCS) for sensor/actuator communication has been developed to facilitate energy and environmental monitoring on the shop floor of industrial production sites. Initially, the distinct demands and requirements are described. As the WCS has been designed for new installations as well as for retrofitting already installed facilities, the WCS has to be able to coexist with other wireless communication systems already allocated in the same frequency band. The WCS handles measurement data from both, energy-autarkic sensors and fast line-powered sensors. Mobile users in the field equipped with mobile devices are served by the system, too. A modular hardware concept has been chosen for easy system modification or for the integration of new wireless standards. Finally, measured results for the coexistence capability are presented.

    Abstract. In contrast to conventional hydronic heating systems, in which the air is used as a medium for the convective heat transfer, an alternative approach is based on the usage of infrared (IR) radiant heating foils. These foils, which are applied to the walls and the ceiling of a laboratory, can be controlled individually. This leads to the possibility of heating the room zonewise and only when a person is present in a zone. A local comfortable climate is provided only in occupied zones, with the remaining zones being kept at a lower base temperature. Consequently, the measurement system has to detect persons in each zone and to determine the putative thermal comfort at relevant locations in the room. For the first problem, we examined and evaluated different sensor types capable of localizing persons without infringing on their anonymity. For the second problem, we used the fact that the thermal comfort mainly depends on the operative temperature (Li et al., 2010; DIN EN ISO 7730, 2006; de Dear and Brager, 2002). According to Simone et al. (2007), this temperature can be measured directly by an easily producible, planar sensor. The sensors were integrated in a wireless sensor network which consists of Wi-Fi-capable microcontroller boards, wireless smart home equipment, a Wi-Fi router, and a server.

    Abstract. Maritime study sites utilized as a physical experimental test bed for sensor data fusion, communication technology and data stream analysis tools can provide substantial frameworks for design and development of e-navigation technologies. Increasing safety by observation and monitoring of the maritime environment by new technologies meets forward-looking needs to facilitate situational awareness. Further, such test beds offer a solid basis for standardizing new technologies to advance growth by reducing time to market of up-to-date industrial products and technologies. Especially optical sensor technologies are well suited to provide a situational and marine environmental assessment of waterways for (i) online detection of relevant situations, (ii) collection of data for further analysis and (iii) reuse of data, e.g. for training or testing of assistant systems. The test bed set-up has to consider maintainability, flexibility and extensibility for efficient test set-ups. This means that new use cases and applications within the test bed infrastructure, here presented by a research port, can be easily developed and extended by installing new sensors, actuators and software components. Furthermore, the system supports reliable remote communication between onshore and offshore participants. A series of in situ experiments at the research port of Bremerhaven and in other maritime environments were performed, representing applications and scenarios to demonstrate the capability for the proposed system framework and design.

    Abstract. Completeness checking of constructional steel structures with several hundred weld-on parts (mountings, such as car body shells/chassis for rail vehicles, for example) still represents a great challenge. It has been performed manually so far. By the use of 3-D scanners, it is possible to obtain sufficiently comprehensive information about the actual configuration (as-is state) of the constructional steel structure to be checked. For this purpose, the laser beam geometry must be contemplated. By using an adapted algorithm for post-processing of the resulting point clouds, difference figures are superimposed over the respective 3-D model as the target state. Therefore, an algorithm was adapted and applied here. The difference figures are useful for signalling the possible deviations and the missing parts, at least, however, suspect points. Thus, the disadvantages of the exclusively manual completeness checking practiced so far, i.e. tiredness and slowness of the inspector, can largely be avoided. The 3-D model-based inspection procedure allows one to handle the variation in the target state with just a few volumes of equal configuration (e.g. less than 10 trains with equal configuration). There is a general problem that the tolerance for the structure is in the same range as the size of the mountings. It is possible to solve this problem by dividing the test item as well as the point cloud into areas. Superposing the 3-D model by point clouds and calculating the difference figures will be performed area by area.

    Abstract. A new impedance spectroscopy measurement procedure for automotive battery cells is presented, which is based on waveform shaping. The method is optimized towards a short measurement duration, high excitation power and increased frequency resolution and overcomes limitations of established methods. For a given spectral magnitude profile, a corresponding time domain waveform is derived from the inverse discrete Fourier transform. Applying an identical initial phase angle for each frequency component, the resulting signal exhibits a high peak-to-peak amplitude at relatively low total excitation power. This limits the maximum allowed power for quasi-linear excitation. Altering the phase angles randomly spreads the excitation power across the complete measurement duration. Thereby, linearity is preserved at higher excitation power. A large set of phase patterns is evaluated statistically in order to obtain a phase pattern with a significant peak-to-peak amplitude decrease. By means of numerical optimization, even further peak-to-peak amplitude reduction is achieved. Including window functions in the synthesis concept minimizes spectral leakage without compromising the spectral signal magnitude in the frequency range of interest. A time domain waveform optimized for impedance spectroscopy on lithium ion cells is synthesized based on the proposed approach and evaluated on real automotive cells. The resulting impedance data show good concordance with established standard measurement procedures at significantly reduced measurement duration and charge throughput. Additionally, increased frequency resolution is achieved, enhancing the level of detail of the obtained impedance data. The method is used for improved localization of aging effects in the cells, without further stress of the cells by the measurement procedure.

    Abstract. Fibre optic sensors are excellent tools to use for monitoring high-voltage current collectors. Because of their small cross section and electrical neutrality, they are easily integrated into the current collector strip and are well specialized for detection of high-speed load events. The conventional contact force measurement with four force sensors below the collector strips can also be simplified by using fibre optic force and acceleration sensors.

    Abstract. Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is a gas that well represents air quality in indoor environments as well as being an important greenhouse gas. However, the reliable and affordable sensing of environmental CO 2 at room temperature, with techniques other than optical spectroscopy, remains an unsolved problem to this day. One major challenge for solid state sensors is the realisation of adequate selectivity, especially towards changing humidity. The thin film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) is a MEMS (Microelectromechanical systems) device that can not only detect gas-induced mass changes but also changes in the acoustic velocity and density of its layers. This multi-sensing provides a suitable platform for selective gas sensing. In this work we present studies done on polyaminosiloxane- and ethyl cellulose-functionalised FBARs regarding CO 2 sensitivity, selectivity towards humidity, and stability. We demonstrate how CO 2 and humidity signals can be separated and that CO 2 can be sensed with a resolution of 50 ppm between 400 and 1000 ppm. Using the Mason model, we show how the acoustic velocity and density of an absorption layer can be determined and how changes in those parameters affect the resonance frequency shift. The understanding of these results ultimately presents a tool to theoretically separate any number of gas analytes.

    Abstract. The analysis of dynamic measurements provides numerous challenges that significantly limit the use of existing calibration facilities and mathematical methodologies. For instance, dynamic measurement analysis requires the application of methods from digital signal processing, system and control theory, and multivariate statistics. The design of digital filters and the corresponding evaluation of measurement uncertainty for high-dimensional measurands are particularly challenging. Several international research projects involving national metrology institutes (NMIs), academia and industry have developed mathematical, statistical and technical methodologies for the treatment of dynamic measurements at NMI level. The aim of the European research project 14SIP08 is the development of guidelines and software to extend the applicability of those methodologies to a wider range of users. This paper outlines the required activities towards a traceability chain for dynamic measurements from NMIs to industrial applications. A key aspect is the development and provision of a new open-source software package. The software is freely available, open for non-commercial distribution, and contains the most important data analysis tools for dynamic measurements.
