    A switchable and tunable multiwavelength erbium-doped fiber laser is proposed and demonstrated based on a two-stage Lyot filter and intensity-dependent loss (IDL) effect induced by a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM). The proposed laser can achieve multi-parameter individually tuning functions, such as adjusting the channel-spacing, number, and spectral-range of lasing line. The channel spacing can be switched via adjusting the beam’s polarization in the Lyot filter among 0.53, 0.78, and 1.56 nm. Meanwhile, the number and the spectral range of the multiwavelength lasing line can be independently controlled by IDL modulation through the combination of adjusting pump power and the birefringence in the loop of the NOLM. The individual tuning method of the proposed laser on each specific output characteristic provides more convenience and practicality to the applications.

    In this letter, we aim for maximizing the throughput of a visible light communication (VLC) system. Explicitly, we conceive a soft-in soft-out decoder providing soft feedback for the classic run length limited (RLL) codes, hence facilitating iterative decoding for exchanging valuable extrinsic information between the RLL and the error correction modules of a VLC system. Furthermore, we propose a unity rate code for our VLC system, which, hence, becomes capable of matching the ON–OFF keying capacity, while maintaining a flicker-free dimming value of 50%.

    We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally a chiral-selective plasmonic absorber by utilizing eng -shaped-resonators in the visible frequencies. Our metasurface design enables chiral-selective absorption bands, in which absorption peaks for left-handed circularly polarized and right-handed circularly polarized occur at different resonance wavelengths resulting in significant circular dichroism (CD). Both simulated and measured absorption spectra exhibit maximum absorptions exceeding 80% associated with a CD value of ~0.5. Such a chiral plasmonic metasurface absorber with high performance could find applications in optical filters, non-linear optics, thermal emitters, and hot-electron collection devices.

    Conformal phosphor coating is one of the most attractive phosphor layer arrangements for white light-emitting diodes (wLEDs) due to its excellent angular color uniformity (ACU). In this letter, conformal phosphor coating was realized by ionic wind patterning. WLEDs with different average correlated color temperatures (CCTs) were fabricated successfully through adjusting the thicknesses of phosphor layers. The enhancement effects on the light efficiency (LE) and ACU are demonstrated by experiments. Results indicate that compared with the conventional dispensing coating method, the proposed method improves the optical performances significantly. The LE is enhanced from 0.3253 to 0.3287 (1%) at 250 mA and 0.2591 to 0.2719 (5%) at 450 mA. The angular CCT deviations at 350 mA are reduced from 772 to 220 K, 1630 to 488 K, 2420 to 880 K, and 2845 to 1755 K, when the averaged CCTs are about 4500, 5500, 6500, and 8000 K, respectively.

    We report uni-traveling-carrier photodiodes with a quantum efficiency of 98% ±0.8% at 1064 nm. For $50~\mu \text{m}$ devices, the measured 3-dB bandwidth is 2 GHz and the dark current is 10 nA at a bias voltage of −5 V. The dark current is dominated by generation-recombination at a bias voltage of −10 V and the activation energy is 0.23 eV. At higher bias voltage, tunneling becomes a significant component of the dark current.

    This letter reports a demonstration of a $2\times 2$ multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) indoor visible-light communication (VLC) system using a novel fluorescent optical concentrator-based receiver. This potentially allows a high degree of spatial multiplexing to be achieved using a simple receiver structure that can have a wide field-of-view. Details of a two-channel MIMO VLC system that operates at 32 Mb/s with a receiver acceptance angle of ±22.5° are given, and future directions are discussed.

    A photonic multi-channel terahertz (THz) wireless transmission system in the 350–475 GHz band is experimentally demonstrated. The employment of six THz carriers modulated with 10 Gbaud Nyquist quadrature phase-shift keying baseband signal per carrier results in an overall capacity of up to 120 Gb/s. The THz carriers with high-frequency stability and low phase noise are generated based on photonic photomixing of 25-GHz spaced six optical tones and a single optical local oscillator derived from a same optical frequency comb in an ultra-broadband uni-travelling carrier photodiode. The bit-error-rate performance below the hard decision forward error correction threshold of $3.8\times 10^{\mathrm {\mathbf {-3}}}$ for all the channels is successfully achieved after wireless delivery. Furthermore, we also investigate the influence of the harmonic spurs in a THz receiver on the performance of transmission system, and the experimental results suggest more than 30 dB spur suppression ratio in downconverted intermediate frequency signals for obtaining less than 1 dB interference.

    We experimentally demonstrate 168-Gb/s single polarization four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) transmission over 10 km of single mode fiber (SMF) in the O-band below the 400-GbE task force operating bit error rate (BER) of $2 \times 10^{-4}$ . To the best of our knowledge, this rate is the highest bit rate reported for single polarization direct detection PAM4 transmission over 10 km of SMF in the O-band. We evaluate the BER performance of the PAM4 signal versus bit rate, number of equalizer taps, received power, and reach. Results reveal that up to 176-Gb/s bit rate can be transmitted over 10 km at a BER of $4 \times 10^{-4}$ and 8 dBm of received signal power. Finally, we show that the residual chromatic dispersion at up to 88 Gbaud is negligible by fixing the received power over varying reach, demonstrating that the BER is solely governed by the received signal power.

    A reconfigurable yet energy self-sufficient signal distribution node with extensive transmission and monitoring functionalities supporting physical-layer flexibility is presented and experimentally evaluated. Operation in three different modes of wavelength distribution is supported from the O- to the L-band and features coarse, dense wavelength, or power splitting. The node does not require a local power supply unit due to the use of optical energy transmission at a delivered optical feed of −10 dBm and can be, therefore, deployed in a fully passive optical network. The transmission performance has been verified for analogue radio-over-fiber connectivity. Negligible penalties have been experienced when inserting the node in a realistic access network scenario, thus evidencing the absence of severe crosstalk even in case of a large number of 43 simultaneously transmitted wavelength channels. Fast switching of 10-ms long burst packets is also supported by the node. Moreover, coarse spectral monitoring of lit channels has been integrated.

    Using an offline cross-correlation technique, we have analyzed the noise behavior of a new type of optical frequency comb (OFC), which is carrier envelope offset free by configuration, due to difference frequency generation. In order to evaluate the instrument’s ultimate noise floor, the phase and amplitude noise of a stabilized OFC are measured simultaneously by using two analog-to-digital converters. Carrier recovery and phase detection are done by post-processing, eliminating the need for external phase-locked loops and complex calibration techniques. In order to adapt the measurement noise floor and the number of averages used in cross correlation, an adaptive frequency resolution for noise measurement is applied. Phase noise results are in excellent agreement with the measurements of the fluctuations of the repetition frequency of the OFC obtained from optical signal.
