    We propose in this paper an autonomous motion planning framework for companion robots to accompany humans in a socially desirable manner, which takes safety and comfort requirements into account. The overall framework consists of two parts: first, a novel parallel interacting multiple model-unscented Kalman filter (PIMM-UKF) approach is developed to simultaneously estimate human motion states and model mismatch, and then systematically predict the position and velocity of the human for a finite horizon. Second, based on the predicted human states, a nonlinear model predictive control (MPC) technique is utilized for the robot motion planning. The simulation results have demonstrated the superior performance in prediction using the PIMM-UKF approach. The effectiveness of the MPC planner is also shown by successfully facilitating the socially desirable companion behavior.

    This paper presents an architecture for the development of mobile microgrids using autonomous vehicles for the recovery of electrical power in postdisaster scenarios. The goal is to facilitate the integration of the different disciplines involved and address interrelated challenges in interaction between the disparate components of the system and the physical world. The architecture described in this paper has emerged through a combination of hardware development and experimental studies. The proposed layout will create an autonomous mobile microgrid system consisting of a team of ground robots capable of navigating in a disaster-affected area, making electrical connections, and supplying and controlling the electrical power needed by the loads in the area. This system has the scalability characteristics of an ad hoc system and can reconfigure itself depending on the changes in demanded performance of the microgrid.

    Although 3-D printing or additive manufacturing (AM) holds great promise as a direct manufacturing technology, the geometric accuracy of AM built products remains a critical issue, especially for freeform products with complex geometric shapes. Efforts have long been attempted to improve the accuracy of AM built freeform products. But there is a lack of generic and prescriptive methodology transparent to specific designs and AM processes. This paper fills the gap by establishing the methodology to predict and compensate the in-plane ( $x-y$ plane) geometric deformation of AM built freeform products based on a limited number of simple trial shapes. Built upon our previous predictive model and optimal compensation study for the cylinder and polyhedron shapes, this paper makes a breakthrough by directly controlling arbitrary freeform shape deformation from computer-aided design. Experimental investigation using stereolithography process successfully validates the proposed prescriptive modeling and compensation methodology. This paper provides the prospect of proactively improving printing accuracy of arbitrary products built by a variety of AM processes.

    Continuous five-axis sweep scanning is an emerging technology for free-form surface inspection, which, unlike the traditional three-axis inspection that works in a point-by-point manner, keeps the stylus tip in constant contact with the surface during the scanning, and thus could tremendously improve the inspection efficiency. However, at present, it mostly depends on humans to plan a five-axis inspection path, which severely affects the potential use of this new technology. In this paper, we report a practical algorithm, which is able to automatically generate a five-axis inspection path for an arbitrary free-form surface. The crux of this algorithm is that the unique kinematic characteristics of the five-axis inspection machine are fully considered and utilized when a path is planned. As a direct result of this consideration and utilization, the inspection efficiency is tremendously increased, often 20–30 times better than an inspection path obtained by any traditional path planning algorithm that disregards the inspection machine itself. The experiments performed by us have fully validated this point.

    In this paper, an approximation-free funnel feedback controller is proposed for a class of nonlinear servomechanisms to achieve prescribed tracking error performance. An improved funnel function is proposed to guarantee the transient and asymptotic behavior of the tracking error within a given funnel boundary. The proposed funnel function removes the imposed assumption used in conventional funnel controls (e.g., systems with relative degree one or two) and avoids the potential singularity problem in prescribed performance controls. Moreover, an extended state observer (ESO) is used to address the effect of unknown dynamics in the control system (e.g., friction and disturbances), where the ESO parameters can be easily designed based on the control system bandwidth. The stability of the proposed control system with ESO and funnel function is analyzed via the Lyapunov theory. Comparative simulations and experimental results are conducted based on a practical turntable servomechanisms to validate the efficacy of the proposed method.

    This paper presents new challenges for the development of reconfigurable wireless sensor networks (RWSNs) that adapt dynamically their behaviors to their environment under different properties. An RWSN is a set of networked nodes that execute reconfigurable software tasks for the control of local sensors. We propose a new design methodology named RWiN of an RWSN using unified modeling language (UML) to analyze, construct, develop, and verify easily RWSN architectures. For that, we formulate a metamodel of RWSN based on UML to describe a zone-based architecture that uses a communication protocol for the optimization of distributed reconfigurations. To control the design complexity, we model each agent of this architecture by nested state machines. To verify the temporal constraints by communicating agents, each one is modeled by a timed automaton. The paper’s contribution is applied to a case study, which is simulated with TRMSim-WSN and UPPAAL environment to expose the originality of this new architecture.

    Through calculating the similarity between the historical and the new query data samples, a probabilistic locally weighted prediction method based on supervised latent factor analysis (SLFA) model is proposed. In this method, the contributions of different historical samples are expressed through incorporating the similarity index into the noise variance of the process variables, which renders strong adaptability of the method for describing nonlinear relationships and abrupt changes of the process. Additionally, the proposed locally weighted method is extended to the semisupervised form, which is apparently more practical in real industrial processes, since the sampling rates of quality variables are much lower than those of ordinary process variables. Efficient expectation maximization algorithms are designed for parameter learning in both SLFA and semisupervised locally weighted LFA methods. Two real industrial processes are provided to evaluate the feasibility and the effectiveness of the newly developed soft sensors.

    Considering the operation process rebuilding (OPR) of manufacturing/operation systems, we propose a dynamic interactive bilevel maintenance methodology to satisfy rapid market changes. Predictive maintenance (PdM) intervals at the machine level are dynamically scheduled by a multiobjective model for each diverse machine. A system-level opportunistic maintenance (OM) policy is proposed to facilitate PdM optimizations according to OPR activities. This novel OPR-OM policy utilizes a variable maintenance time window to construct optimal maintenance schedules that are suitable for changeable system structures. The results obtained by applying this methodology at Shanghai Port indicate that the proposed methodology can help a port transportation system to achieve rapid responses to OPR activities, which can significantly improve system efficiency and economy.

    Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) has become a widely used diagnostic technique for the digestive tract, at the price of a large volume of data that needs to be analyzed. To tackle this problem, a new computer-aided system using novel features is proposed in this paper to classify WCE images automatically. In the feature learning stage, to obtain the representative visual words, we first calculate the color scale invariant feature transform from the bleeding, polyp, ulcer, and normal WCE image samples separately and then apply $K$ -means clustering on these features to obtain visual words. These four types of visual words are combined together to composite the representative visual words for classifying the WCE images. In the feature coding stage, we propose a novel saliency and adaptive locality-constrained linear coding (SALLC) algorithm to encode the images. The SALLC encodes patch features based on adaptive coding bases, which are calculated by the distance differences among the features and the visual words. Moreover, it imposes the patch saliency constraint on the feature coding process to emphasize the important information in the images. The experimental results exhibit a promising overall recognition accuracy of 88.61%, validating the effectiveness of the proposed method.

    In today’s big data era, there is a tremendously huge amount of data available. Layman users lack not only the knowledge and experience in data analytics to make sense of these data but also the computational resources for executing the analytics. In this paper, we propose and develop a layman analytics system (LAS), which provides the layman users with a scalable and ready-to-use analytics tool to automatically generate analytics workflows for classification tasks. The LAS is designed to benefit from existing open-source data analytics tools using generic ontological modeling of analytics operators from these tools as well as adaptive constraint refinement for metadata learning. Moreover, the LAS can be deployed on both public and private clouds to cater to the need of scalable computing and easy maintenance. To demonstrate the performance of the LAS, we conducted experiments with 114 data sets obtained from the University of California Irvine Machine Learning Repository. The workflows generated by the LAS were benchmarked against the OpenML whereby each data set has a range of classification accuracy obtained using classifiers designed and fine-tuned by data experts. The comparisons showed that 87 out of 114 data sets have exceeded the 50th percentile of the benchmark data. Among these 87 data sets, the LAS outperforms the 90th percentile of the benchmarks on 49 data sets.
