    The rapid growth of the next-generation communication and networks is bringing video services into more pervasive environments. More and more users access and interact with video content using different devices, such as smart televisions, personal computers, tablets, smartphones, and wearable equipments. Providing heterogeneous Quality of Experience (QoE) that supports a wide variety of multimedia devices is critical to video broadcasting over the next-generation wireless network. This paper reviews practical video broadcasting technologies and examines current requirements ranging from heterogeneous devices to transmission technologies. Meanwhile, various coding methodologies, including QoE modeling, scalable compression efficiency, and flexible transmission, are also discussed. Moreover, this paper presents a typical paradigm as an example for video broadcasting with large-scale heterogeneity support, which enables QoE mapping, joint coding, flexible forward error coding, and cross-layer transmission, as well as optimal and dynamic adaptation to improve the overall receiving quality of heterogeneous devices. Finally, a brief summary of the key ideas and a discussion of interesting open areas are summarized at the end of this paper along with a future recommendation.

    As the smart cities emerged for more comfortable urban spaces, services, such as health, transportation, and so on, need to be promoted. In addition, the cloud computing provides flexible allocation, migration of services, and better security isolation; therefore, it is the infrastructure for the smart cities. Single instruction-set architecture (ISA) heterogeneous multi-core processors have higher performance per watt than their symmetric counterparts and are popular in current processors. In current cloud computing, which integrates a few fast out-of-order cores, coupled with a large number of simpler, slow cores, all cores expose the same ISA. The best way to leverage the effectiveness of these systems is to accelerate sequential CPU-bound threads using fast cores, and to improve the throughput of parallel memory-bound threads using slow cores. However, shared hardware resources, such as memory, respond to requests from all cores, which interfere with each other, leading to both low speed for fast cores and low throughput for slow cores. In this paper, we propose a dynamic resource partitioning (DRP) method for single-ISA heterogeneous multi-cores, which partitions the shared resources according to both threads' requirements for the shared resources and the performance of their running cores. The key principle is to profile both threads' resource characteristics at run-time and the performance of the cores that the threads are running on to estimate demands for resources. Then, we use the estimation to direct our resource partitioning. Moreover, we integrate our DRP with current memory scheduling policies to improve the system performance further for the two methods being orthogonal.

    초록

    In neuroscience, it is widely believed that learning and memory are primarily based on synaptic plasticity which is a neural mechanism that modifies the strength of connections between neurons. As a counterpart in machine learning, the modification of connection strength (weight) endows artificial neural networks with a powerful learning capability to solve various problems. Independent of modification for synaptic strength, recent experimental results have revealed that a single neuron also has the ability to change its intrinsic excitability to fit the synaptic input. This mechanism is referred to as neuronal intrinsic plasticity (IP) in the literature. Computational learning rules for IP have been developed based on the hypothesis of information maximization with a stable response level. With the discovery of this novel plasticity mechanism, a series of studies has focused on how IP plays a role in biological neural systems and how they benefit the learning performance of artificial neural networks. In this review, corresponding research on synergies between IP and synaptic plasticity mechanisms is presented in both the computational modeling of biological neural systems and the applications of artificial neural networks, and this combination in artificial learning systems is defined as synergistic learning.

    Improving patient flow is a way to refine health services. An efficient patient flow can improve the quality of services and the utilization of resources. A smart environment could facilitate the experience of individuals within a physical space, such as a hospital. Meanwhile, a smart healthcare environment could improve patient flow through an efficient scheduling policy and the utilization of healthcare resources by an optimized capacity plan. This paper, first, explores a dynamic scheduling policy to improve the patient flow, and an efficient capacity scheme based on the varying patient flow. This scheduling policy and the capacity scheme can be built in a smart hospital environment through wireless sensor networks and smart healthcare systems. The research applies a formal modeling approach that can provide a quantitative analysis of systems. This approach, performance evaluation process algebra, can give strict definitions for the patient flow in order to model the dynamic scheduling policy and the capacity scheme; moreover, it provides a scalable performance analysis by the fluid flow approximation. Finally, this paper is concerned with how formal method might be used to model and analyze the scheduling policy and the capacity plan on improving the healthcare service before deployment.

    The design of solutions that are able to exploit the available data collected in smart cities environments can lead to insights that can guide the implementation of approaches that have the potential to significantly improve the quality of life within a city. Such solutions include tools for the production of advanced analytics considering data fusion challenges. The preparation of qualitative input data sets, collected in many cases through heterogeneous sources and represented in various formats, constitute a very important step toward a meaningful analysis. Such input data sets, combined with approaches that reduce the data processing burden and support the easy and flexible-in terms of configuration-replication of an analysis, can lead to the next generation analytics tools. In this paper, a novel approach toward the production and consumption of linked data analytics in urban environments is presented. The approach is based on the exploitation of linked data principles, enhancing the ability of managing and processing of data, in ways not available before. In addition to the description of the overall technical approach, the application of the proposed solution into a real-life scenario for examining the health impact of outdoor air pollution in urban areas within an international, national, and regional perspective is detailed. A set of interesting results are produced along with their interpretation toward the provision of suggestions for policy making purposes.

    Video and images acquired by a visual system are seriously degraded under hazy and foggy weather, which will affect the detection, tracking, and recognition of targets. Thus, restoring the true scene from such a foggy video or image is of significance. The main goal of this paper was to summarize current video and image defogging algorithms. We first presented a review of the detection and classification method of a foggy image. Then, we summarized existing image defogging algorithms, including image restoration algorithms, image contrast enhancement algorithms, and fusion-based defogging algorithms. We also presented current video defogging algorithms. We summarized objective image quality assessment methods that have been widely used for the comparison of different defogging algorithms, followed by an experimental comparison of various classical image defogging algorithms. Finally, we presented the problems of video and image defogging which need to be further studied. The code of all algorithms will be available at http://www.yongxu.org/lunwen.html .

    3-D motion tracking is a fundamental technology enabling virtual reality and mixed reality. Correct position and orientation detection are critical as both an input for 3-D interaction and for proper visual display. This paper presents a cross-platform solution for presenting data from multiple tracking systems as if it came from a single system. This frees simulations from having to account for multiple data sources, and allows tracked objects to transition seamlessly from an area covered by one tracking system to another. It also presents an application programming interface with a single data format, eliminating the need for hardware drivers. Finally, when self-contained tracking systems are used, they can themselves be tracked, allowing the trackable area to be adjusted in real time. This allows operators to leverage limited resources in more effective ways, improving simulation quality and opening new possibilities for simulations.

    Enterprise knowledge workers have been overwhelmed by the growing rate of incoming data in recent years. In this paper, we present a recommendation system with the goal of helping knowledge workers in discovering useful new content. In particular, our system builds personalized user models based on file activities on enterprise network file servers. Our models use novel features that are derived from file metadata and user collaboration. Through extensive evaluation on real-world enterprise data, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our system with high precision and recall values. Unfortunately, our experiments reveal that per-user models are unable to handle heavy workloads. To address this limitation, we propose a novel optimization technique, active feature-based model selection, that predicts the user models that should be applied on each test file. Such a technique can reduce the classification time per file by as much as 23 times without sacrificing accuracy. We also show how this technique can be extended to improve the scalability exponentially at marginal cost of prediction accuracy, e.g., we can gain 169 times faster performance on an average across all shares by sacrificing 4% of F-score.

    This paper aims to highlight distinctive features of the SP theory of intelligence, realized in the SP computer model, and its apparent advantages compared with some AI-related alternatives. Perhaps most importantly, the theory simplifies and integrates observations and concepts in AI-related areas, and has potential to simplify and integrate of structures and processes in computing systems. Unlike most other AI-related theories, the SP theory is itself a theory of computing, which can be the basis for new architectures for computers. Fundamental in the theory is information compression via the matching and unification of patterns and, more specifically, via a concept of multiple alignment. The theory promotes transparency in the representation and processing of knowledge, and unsupervised learning of natural structures via information compression. It provides an interpretation of aspects of mathematics and an interpretation of phenomena in human perception and cognition. concepts in the theory may be realized in terms of neurons and their inter-connections (SP-neural). These features and advantages of the SP system are discussed in relation to AI-related alternatives: the concept of minimum length encoding and related concepts, how computational and energy efficiency in computing may be achieved, deep learning in neural networks, unified theories of cognition and related research, universal search, Bayesian networks and some other models for AI, IBM's Watson, solving problems associated with big data and in the development of intelligence in autonomous robots, pattern recognition and vision, the learning and processing of natural language, exact and inexact forms of reasoning, representation and processing of diverse forms of knowledge, and software engineering. In conclusion, the SP system can provide a firm foundation for the long-term development of AI and related areas, and at the same time, it may deliver useful results on relatively short timescales.

    Hybrid analog/digital multiple-input multiple-output architectures were recently proposed as an alternative for fully digital-precoding in millimeter wave wireless communication systems. This is motivated by the possible reduction in the number of RF chains and analog-to-digital converters. In these architectures, the analog processing network is usually based on variable phase shifters. In this paper, we propose hybrid architectures based on switching networks to reduce the complexity and the power consumption of the structures based on phase shifters. We define a power consumption model and use it to evaluate the energy efficiency of both structures. To estimate the complete MIMO channel, we propose an open-loop compressive channel estimation technique that is independent of the hardware used in the analog processing stage. We analyze the performance of the new estimation algorithm for hybrid architectures based on phase shifters and switches. Using the estimate, we develop two algorithms for the design of the hybrid combiner based on switches and analyze the achieved spectral efficiency. Finally, we study the tradeoffs between power consumption, hardware complexity, and spectral efficiency for hybrid architectures based on phase shifting networks and switching networks. Numerical results show that architectures based on switches obtain equal or better channel estimation performance to that obtained using phase shifters, while reducing hardware complexity and power consumption. For equal power consumption, all the hybrid architectures provide similar spectral efficiencies.
