    Nuclear fusion is being developed as a source of abundant, renewable energy. Fusion energy production utilizes large, superconducting magnets to confine and shape burning plasmas, and fusion reactions have been demonstrated and studied at several facilities. While the science is well-understood, several challenges must be overcome to construct reactors for power generation. Most notably, superconducting magnet systems that can operate reliably for long periods of time under ever increasing loads and radiation fluences must be developed. A particular challenge for magnet designers in these applications involves developing electrical insulation that is able to withstand the combined loads of extreme temperatures (both cryogenic and elevated temperatures), large shear stresses, cyclic fatigue, high operating voltages, and high levels of incident irradiation. Composite technology development (CTD) has investigated a series of toughened insulations with the objectives of enhancing fatigue and shear strength, radiation tolerance, and dielectric strength. Significant shear fatigue resistance improvements were achieved for two cases. CTD-425 saw a 250% improvement in cycles to failure, while the improved CTD-101K laminate did not fail under cyclic loading (180 000 cycles) when using treated fibers. Radiation resistance was improved as much as 45% at four times the ITER design fluence.

    High-field MQXF-series quadrupoles are presently under development by LARP and CERN for the upcoming LHC luminosity upgrade. Quench training and protection studies on MQXF prototypes require a capability to accurately localize quenches and measure their propagation velocity in the magnet coils. The voltage tap technique commonly used for such purposes is not a convenient option for the 4.2-m-long MQXF-A prototype, nor can it be implemented in the production model. We have developed and tested a modular inductive magnetic antenna for quench localization. The base element of our quench antenna is a round-shaped printed circuit board containing two orthogonal pairs of flat coils integrated with low-noise preamplifiers. The elements are aligned axially and spaced equidistantly in 8-element sections using a supporting rod structure. The sections are installed in the warm bore of the magnet, and can be stacked together to adapt for the magnet length. We discuss the design, operational characteristics and preliminary qualification of the antenna. Axial quench localization capability with an accuracy of better than 2 cm has been validated during training test campaign of the MQXF-S1 quadrupole.

    We have been investigating the electrical breakdown (BD) characteristics of liquid nitrogen (LN 2 ) with a transient thermal stresses to simulate the quench conditions of resistive-type superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL). We call such BD of LN 2 with the transient thermal stress as “dynamic BD,” and discriminate it from that with a continuous thermal stress. In this paper, we investigated the dynamic BD characteristics of LN 2 for different LN 2 pressures, electrode sizes, and terms of transient thermal stress input. In addition, we obtained the BD characteristics of LN 2 with the continuous thermal stress, and compared them with the dynamic BD characteristics. Furthermore, we analyzed the statistical scattering of the time from the thermal stress input to the dynamic BD occurrence and discussed the dynamic BD mechanisms of LN 2 . We also proposed a flowchart of rational and reliable electrical insulation design of resistive-type SFCL based on the dynamic BD characteristics of LN 2 .

    The China fusion engineering test reactor is a new tokamak device. It is a commercial reactor, which demands a superconducting magnet with higher magnetic field. The maximum field of CS and TF will get around 15 T, which is much higher than that of present reactors. In order to meet the requirements, the new conductor with Bi2Sr2 CaCu2Ox is considered as one potential material for the superconducting magnets. Because Bi2212 wire needs to endure special heat treatment with oxygen, the jacket material is one key issue. As one new material, Ni80Cr has an excellent performance, which cannot react with Bi-2212 wire. It could be one potential material as Bi-2212 cable-in-conduit conductor jacket. In order to understand the mechanical properties of Ni80Cr, the samples with different conditions were prepared, and tested at high, room, and low temperature (4.2 K). The results are analyzed in this paper.

    REBa2Cu3Ox (REBCO, RE = rare earth) coated conductors (CCs) are expected to show high performance for superconducting coil applications due to their high tensile strength and high critical current density under magnetic fields. One of the most serious problems on the coil application is the significant screening current, which is caused by the configuration of CC. Since screening current is dependent on the width of the REBCO layer, filamentization of the REBCO layer is strongly desired. We have succeeded in fabricating long length four-divided multifilamentary CCs with 4 mm wide over 100 m long by using the process of scratching the IBAD-MgO layer (scratching process). In this work, we fabricated two epoxy-impregnated coils and investigated the effects of the screening current. One of the coils is wound with multifilamentary CCs fabricated by scratching process, another is wound with conventional mono-filamentary CC. As the results, it is confirmed that the screening current is reduced and the coupling current between the filaments might be in the acceptable range on the DC magnet application.

    Using ultrathin RE-Ba-Cu-O (REBCO, RE = rare earth) superconductor tapes, we have fabricated of a multilayer round wire with an outer diameter of 1.6 mm on a flexible copper former of 0.8 mm diameter with a critical current of 283 A at 77 K, self-field. A single-layer round wire's angular dependence of critical current in a magnetic field shows near isotropic characteristics. The critical current of a single-layer round wire has been measured over a temperature range of 30-77 K in magnetic fields up to 9 T.

    We prepare BaFe 2-x Co x As 2 superconducting tape via the powder in tube method. The critical current density at 4.2 K and 10 T is 1000 A/cm 2 . We find that most of the grains are 1-2 μm large with random orientations, leading to a low c-axis texture. Via magnetization and magnetoresistance measurement, it is found that the superconducting phase is inhomogeneous. The flux pinning energy, which is obtained via the thermal activated flux flow model, is small and decreases quickly with the increasing magnetic field. As a result, J c of the tape is low and shows a strong field dependence.

    Based on the pre-existing assembled, stacked, or twisted structures of high temperature superconducting (HTS) wires, a novel soldered-stacked-square (3S) HTS wire is suggested and developed through narrowing, stacking, and soldering processes in this study. For the fabrication processes of the 3S wire, a narrow 2G tape with 1 mm width is applied, and the stacking and soldering processes are completed simultaneously. To confirm the performance of the 3S HTS wire, several 3S samples are fabricated. For the 3S HTS samples, we evaluate typical electrical and mechanical properties, and investigated for the feasibility of the 3S HTS wire in the HTS applications. The test results show that measured critical currents of two 3S wire samples are 170 and 255 A, and their curves are typical ones of HTS tapes. The measured self-field ac loss is also reasonable, which is analyzed from both theoretical models of the elliptical and thin strip equations. Moreover, the minimum bending diameter for the 3S samples is approximately 60 mm, and the allowable axial tensile force is 350 N. These mechanical properties of 3S wire are satisfied for the HTS applications significantly. Finally, the smallest round structure of the HTS wire is conceptually suggested for the 3S HTS wire.

    A common problem of superconducting devices is to survive during a fault with a current overload. At a fault, superconducting device will have strong overheating and burning out is possible. The problem becomes more serious in case if a high-temperature superconducting (HTS) wire has a weak point where the critical current is less than the average over a wire. Such a weak point could be the point of origination of strong overheating within a very localized area. This can lead to burning and destroying of an HTS device. To study this problem, we developed the experimental setup with the spatial resolution 2 mm and the time resolution 1 ms to observe a local temperature/voltage evolution in HTS tapes overloaded by currents. The preliminary experiments were performed to measure local heat/voltage development on 2G HTS tapes with an artificial weak point. Local heat/voltage evolutions have been measured and compared with calculations by our model developed earlier.
