    Self-assembled artificial pinning centers (APCs) with controlled morphology are key to optimal pinning in superconducting YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-x (YBCO) thin films and coated conductors. Here, we investigate the transport critical current density $J_{c}$ ( H , T , θ ) of YBCO films with BaZrO 3 nanorods (BZO-NRs) and 3 vol.% Y 2 O 3 nanoparticles (Y 2 O 3 -NPs) as the BZO-NRs concentration is systematically varied in the range of 2–6 vol.%. We show that the growth kinetics of APCs in these BZO-Y 2 O 3 double-doped YBCO films differs significantly from YBCO films doped with BZO only. In particular, the presence of Y 2 O 3 -NPs reduced the formation of the aligned BZO-NRs in the c-axis or normal of the film, enabling a high-concentration isotropic BZO-based APCs to form at high BZO doping. This resulted in a significantly enhanced pinning force density $F_{p}\,(H)$ as well as isotropic pinning landscape. By fitting the Dew–Hughes equation of the pinning force density $F_{{{p}}}\,(H)$ at different temperatures $T\,= \,{\text{50}}\hbox{--} {\text{80}}\,{\text{K}}$ and angles of H at $\theta \,= \,0\,(H{\rm{/ / }}$ c-axis), 45°, and 90° ( H //ab), we extract the scaling behaviors of the $F_{{{p}}}\,(H)$ associated with the BZO-NRs and isotropic BZO and Y 2 O 3 NPs. This result sheds light on approaches towards interactive control of strong and isotropic APCs in YBCO films and coated conductors.

    The strain dependence of superconducting material is known to be responsible for the degradation of the electrical performance of cables. As such, their electrical optimization requires an understanding of their mechanical behavior. This paper introduces a method for elasto-plastic modeling of commercial MgB 2 multifilamentary strands manufactured by the ex situ powder-in-tube method. The model is based on a simplified representation of the structure, built using components' volume fractions and nanoindentation test data. Monotonic and cyclic tension-compression tests were performed on the strands before and after chemical dissolution of the Monel outer layer to provide a multiscale experimental database. These tests were used to identify the parameters of the kinematic and isotropic hardening laws of the elasto-plastic model. The model intends to be subsequently used to simulate the electrical behavior of cables and define guidelines for the manufacturing process, cabling process, and end-product operating condition.

    Standard in situ type MgB 2 strands manufactured by Hyper Tech, Inc., have 19-36 subelements, a Monel outer sheath, and a Cu interfilamentary matrix. Typical transport J c s of the strands are 2 × 10 5 A/cm 2 with n-values of 20-30 at 4.2 K and 5 T. This paper introduces two new MgB 2 conductor designs. First, a new class of MgB 2 strand is designed for magnetic resonance imaging applications. This type has a higher Cu content designed to enhance protection of a magnet wound with it, and a larger diameter to increase the critical current. Second, a new class of low ac loss MgB 2 strand with high filament count and a high-resistance matrix is discussed. Transport properties at 4.2 K and fields up to 10 T are reported. Optical techniques are used to study the macro and microstructures of these MgB 2 strands.

    We prepare BaFe 2-x Co x As 2 superconducting tape via the powder in tube method. The critical current density at 4.2 K and 10 T is 1000 A/cm 2 . We find that most of the grains are 1-2 μm large with random orientations, leading to a low c-axis texture. Via magnetization and magnetoresistance measurement, it is found that the superconducting phase is inhomogeneous. The flux pinning energy, which is obtained via the thermal activated flux flow model, is small and decreases quickly with the increasing magnetic field. As a result, J c of the tape is low and shows a strong field dependence.

    YBCO tubes of ~10 mm diameter closed at one extremity were engineered by a buffer-aided top seeded melt growth fabrication process. These tubes can act as efficient “dc” magnetic shields and are observed to reduce axial flux densities of 1.5 T by a factor of 100 at 20 K. Such performances are comparable in magnitude to the record threshold inductions reported for bulk MgB2 and Bi-2212 materials at lower temperatures. Magnetic shielding measurements for open and closed tubes at 77 K also show that the presence of the cap improves substantially the shielding performance at the closed extremity since it reduces the penetration through the open end. This fabrication technique is extremely promising for shielding “dc” stray fields generated by high temperature superconductor magnets operated in a temperature range obtained by cryocoolers, liquid hydrogen (20 K), or liquid neon (27 K).

    [100]-tilt YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-x bicrystal Josephson junctions are good candidates to realize high values of characteristic voltages I c R n , which are expected due to large energy gaps in high-T c materials. Here, we report on detailed electrical characterization of [100]-tilt YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-x bicrystal Josephson junctions, which have the maximal I c R n -values up to 9.4 mV, for resistances R n in the range from 0.9 to 400Ω. The I-V curves have been fitted well to those of the RSJ model with ac-coupled resistive shunts R e . The first derivatives dV/dI versus V have demonstrated a reproducible set of resonances of two types. Numerical simulations of the dV/dI versus V for Josephson junctions coupled with external THz RLC-resonators have been made and both types of resonances have been fitted. A form of the I-V curves and resonances in the first derivatives dV/dI versus V have been attributed to intrinsic broadband and frequency-selective losses, due to interaction of Josephson oscillations with transverse and longitudinal IR-active phonons in YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-x electrodes.

    The stability against quench is one of the main issues to be pursued in a superconducting material, which should be able to perform at very high levels of current densities. Here we focus on the connection between the critical current I c and the quenching current I* associated to the so-called Flux-Flow Instability phenomenon, which sets-in as an abrupt transition from the flux flow state to the normal state. To this purpose, we analyze several current-voltage characteristics of three types of Iron-Based thin films, acquired at different temperature and applied magnetic field values. For these samples, we discuss the impact of a possible coexistence of intrinsic electronic mechanisms and extrinsic thermal effects on the quenching current dependence upon the applied magnetic field. The differences between the quenching current and the critical current are also reported in the case of predominant intrinsic mechanisms. Carrying out a comparison with the HTS case, we suggest, which material can be the best tradeoff between maximum operating temperature, higher upper critical field, and stability under high current bias.

    Among the recently discovered Fe-based superconducting compounds, the Ba-122 phase has proved to be the more attracting for the development of powder in tube (PIT) processed conductors. In fact, after some years of development, critical current densities (J c ) of about 10 5 A/cm 2 at 4.2 K and magnetic fields up to 10 T have been obtained in (Ba 0.6 K 0.4 )Fe 2 As 2 , PIT wires and tapes. To develop a safe upscaling method, the synthesis of the powders is a crucial point. In order to avoid the use of highly reactive K we have developed BaFe 2 (P 1-x As x ) 2 PIT tapes. This compound has proved to be very stable and in form of crystals and thin films exhibits excellent critical current: We succeeded in manufacturing PIT tapes with this phase with J c values of about 10 3 A/cm 2 at 4.2 K in self-field. Detailed microstructural and chemical investigations of the samples have been performed by high-resolution TEM, scanning TEM, and electron energy loss spectrometry analysis. A deformation network inside the grains that can induce strong pinning has been observed. However, chemical inhomogeneities at the grain boundaries are also present, which limit the transport current.

    Pinning enhancement for YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ (YBCO) thin films is critical for their future applications such as superconducting cables, generators, and motors. In this study, several pinning landscapes are introduced and compared for improving the superconducting properties of YBCO thin films. First, BaZrO 3 (BZO) nanoparticles have been doped into YBCO matrix providing uniform defect pinning centers and resulting in the superconducting property enhancement. Second, a magnetic nanocomposite of (La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 (LSMO)) x (CeO 2 ) 1-x (with compositions of LSMO and CeO 2 varied from 50:50 to 70:30) has been incorporated into YBCO as either a cap layer or a buffer layer. Using this approach, both magnetic pinning and defects pinning are introduced in the systems. Third, multilayers of (LSMO) 0.5 (CeO 2 ) 0.5 /YBCO have been deposited to achieve uniform defect and magnetic pinning effects through the film thickness. The superconducting properties (critical temperature T c , and especially the critical current density J c ) are compared for all the YBCO films with different pinning landscapes, and the corresponding pinning mechanisms are also discussed for each case. It is found that the pinning effect of YBCO film with magnetic nanocomposite layer is more significant under lower applied field, compared to the BZO-YBCO film. Through this comparison study, optimum pinning landscapes with combined defects and magnetic pinning approaches are proposed.
