    Smart cities essentially require the state-of-the-art technologies that can provide smart service in various aspects, and robotic systems are one of the key solutions for such requirements. Time is a critical issue when dealing with people who experience a sudden cardiac arrest that unfortunately could die due to inaccessibility of the emergency treatment. Therefore, an immediate treatment using automated external defibrillator (AED) must be administered to the victim within a few minutes after collapsing. Hence, we have designed and developed the ambulance robot, which brings along an AED in a sudden event of cardiac arrest and facilitates various modes of operation from manual to autonomous functioning to save someones lives in smart cities. The details of the design and development of such robot are presented in this paper.

    Optical codes have long been used to carry small amounts of static data, such as URLs, IDs or other short binary sequences. In this paper, we experiment on the use of sequences of optical codes to form a one-way communication channel. In this context, a sender is made of a surface displaying rapidly changing codes, which are picked up by a receiver's camera and converted back into a binary data stream. After presenting experimental results seeking the combination of frame rate, code size, and error correction level maximizing effective bandwidth, we describe the implementation of a robust communication protocol designed, specifically for lossy, simplex, and low-bandwidth data links. Our findings indicate that such a protocol is sufficient for carrying at least voice-quality audio in real time.

    We present magnetic rendering, a new haptic display method applying an electromagnet array to produce magnetic field in mid-air where the force field can be felt as magnetic repulsive force exerted on the hand through the attached magnet disks. The magnetic field is generated by a specifically designed electromagnet array driven by direct current. By attaching small magnet disks on the hand, the tactile sensation can be perceived by the user. This method can provide a strong tactile force and avoid cumbersome attachments with wires, and thus, it is suitable for a colocated visual and haptic display. In this paper, we introduce the detailed design of the electromagnet array for haptic rendering purposes, which is modeled and tested using finite-element method simulations. We characterize the model mathematically, and apply recursive least squares adaptive control algorithm for controlling the magnetic field. We evaluate the performance of our simulated model in terms of force strength, operation distance, and force stiffness. We then implement and test the control algorithm, which results in fast and accurate convergence. We conclude with simulations on a 15-by-15 model to generate a haptic human face, which results in a smooth force field and accurate force exertion on the control points.

    Smart cities have been envisioned during the last decade. Moreover, various projects have been initiated to bring this concept into reality. Smart city is basically an emergence of the existing and new Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) to make our living standard more safe and digitized. Wireless communications, such as sensors, actuators, intelligent transportation systems, and smart grids, have played a vital role in the dissemination of information under the given circumstances. Similarly, it is hard to declare any city as a smart city without taking benefits from wireless sensor networks (WSNs). However, with new requirements and delay sensitive applications, the existing WSN requires significant alterations at several layers. In this paper, a new time division multiple access (TDMA)-based medium access control (MAC) protocol, called bitmap-assisted efficient and scalable TDMA-based MAC (BEST-MAC), is proposed for adaptive traffic in hierarchical WSNs that can be deployed in the smart cities. BEST-MAC is specifically designed to improve the quality control of such smart cities applications, where diverse traffic is required and loss or delay in data traffic is unacceptable. The main contributions of BEST-MAC include: 1) it uses small size time slots; 2) the number of those time slots is more than the number of member nodes; 3) knapsack algorithm is used to schedule time slots; and 4) short node address (1 B) is proposed to identify the member nodes. First two contributions of BEST-MAC handle adaptive traffic loads of all members in an efficient manner. The knapsack algorithm not only reduces the job completion time of a node but also minimizes the average packet delay with better link utilization. The short node address reduces the control overhead that improves the energy efficiency. The simulation results verify that the proposed BEST-MAC transmits more data with less delay and energy consumption compared with the existing MAC protocols.

    Turbo codes facilitate near-capacity transmission throughputs by achieving a reliable iterative forward error correction. However, owing to the serial data dependence imposed by the logarithmic Bahl-Cocke-Jelinek-Raviv algorithm, the limited processing throughputs of the conventional turbo decoder implementations impose a severe bottleneck upon the overall throughputs of real-time communication schemes. Motivated by this, we recently proposed a floating-point fully parallel turbo decoder (FPTD) algorithm, which eliminates the serial data dependence, allowing parallel processing and hence significantly reducing the number of clock cycles required. In this paper, we conceive a technique for reducing the critical datapath of the FPTD, and we propose a novel fixed-point version as well as its very large scale integration (VLSI) implementation. We also propose a novel technique, which allows the FPTD to also decode shorter frames employing compatible interleaver patterns. We strike beneficial tradeoffs amongst the latency, core area, and energy consumption by investigating the minimum bit widths and techniques for message log-likelihood ratio scaling and state metric normalization. Accordingly, the design flow and design tradeoffs considered in this paper are also applicable to other fixed-point implementations of error correction decoders. We demonstrate that upon using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) 65-nm low-power technology for decoding the longest long-term evolution frames (6144 b) received over an additive white Gaussian noise channel having E b /N 0 = 1 dB, the proposed fixed-point FPTD VLSI achieves a processing throughput of 21.9 Gb/s and a processing latency of 0.28 μs. These results are 17.1 times superior to those of the state-of-the-art benchmarker. Furthermore, the proposed fixed-point FPTD VLSI achieves an energy consumption of 2.69 μJ/frame and a normalized core area of 5 mm 2 /Gb/s, which are 34% and 23% lower than those of the benchmarker, respectively.

    Real-time urban climate monitoring provides useful information that can be utilized to help urban management personnel to monitor and adapt their precautionary measures to extreme events, including urban heatwaves. Fortunately, recently created social media platforms, such as Twitter, furnish real-time and high-resolution spatial information that may be useful for climate condition estimation. The objective of this paper was to utilize geotagged tweets (participatory sensing data) for urban temperature analysis. We first detected tweets related to heat (heat-tweets). Then, we examined the relationships between monitored temperatures and heat-tweets through a statistical model framework based on copula modeling methods. We demonstrate that there are strong relationships between heat-tweets and temperatures recorded at an intra-urban scale, which are revealed by our analysis of Tokyo city and its suburbs. Subsequently, we investigated the application of heat-tweets for informing spatiotemporal Gaussian process interpolation of temperatures as an application example of heat-tweets. We utilized a combination of spatially sparse weather monitoring sensor data, which comprise infrequently available moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer remote sensing data and spatially and temporally dense lower quality geotagged Twitter data. A spatial best linear unbiased estimation technique was applied. The results suggest that tweets provide the useful auxiliary information for urban climate assessment.

    Comprehensive understandings to the built environment especially the urban form is a prerequisite for building a smart city. This paper is based on computational methods to examine the urban fabric of Hankou, China, as a case study. Quantitative and comparative analyses are involved to understand the characteristics on the block scale, where massive demolition and new construction coincide with the existing historical context. Five urban fabric indicators are defined (i.e., density, compactness, fragmentation, variance, and cohesion) to conduct a case study for the 83 selected blocks using geographic information system tools and statistical analysis. Distribution patterns and correlations between these indicators are analyzed. Comparisons are made between typical blocks with high, median, and low fabric densities using comprehensive fabric indicators. The research results indicate that the organic order of the original urban fabric is facing damage, especially from arbitrary demolition, overinfilling, and spontaneous encroachment. Finally, this paper discusses how retaining the urban fabric makes the city a vibrant place to live. The sustainable development of a city should attach great importance to the protection and continuation of local characteristics of integrity and authenticity. The described analytical methods could contribute to the optimization of urban design strategies for future smart cities.

    Future wireless networks will exploit a variety of wireless technologies to provide ubiquities connectivity to mobile devices in the form of cellular, Wireless Local Area Networks, and femtocells. Inevitably, future wireless networks will be diverse in nature, employing a number of different techniques to associate the hand held devices that are deemed to use the network. Furthermore, mobile users seek for seamless connectivity, while roaming in the midst of different networks. This requires the mobile device and the wireless networks be capable of performing a vertical handover, when the mobile nodes find themselves in the vicinity of a foreign network. Regardless of the technological challenges in terms of security, data integrity and mutual authentication between participating agents remain a significant concern in heterogeneous networks. This paper explores these concerns by examining a number of solutions proposed for vertical handover, and identifies EAP Reauthentication Protocol (ERP) as a technology-independent flexible mechanism for a vertical handover. EAP-ERP satisfies the mobility requirements of future hand held devices while promising the desired security futures. In view of thoroughly exploring EAP-ERP, Casper/FDR has been used in this paper to analyze its security properties under various conditions. The results indicate that despite the initial perception, EAP-ERP lacks mutual authentication between agents, while the integrity of keying material is adequately protected.

    A centralized heterogeneous formation flight position control scheme has been formulated using an explicit model following design, based on a Linear Quadratic Regulator Proportional Integral (LQR PI) controller. The leader quadcopter is a stable reference model with desired dynamics whose output is perfectly tracked by the two wingmen quadcopters. The leader itself is controlled through the pole placement control method with desired stability characteristics, while the two followers are controlled through a robust and adaptive LQR PI control method. Selected 3-D formation geometry and static stability are maintained under a number of possible perturbations. With this control scheme, formation geometry may also be switched to any arbitrary shape during flight, provided a suitable collision avoidance mechanism is incorporated. In case of communication loss between the leader and any of the followers, the other follower provides the data, received from the leader, to the affected follower. The stability of the closed-loop system has been analyzed using singular values. The proposed approach for the tightly coupled formation flight of mini unmanned aerial vehicles has been validated with the help of extensive simulations using MATLAB/Simulink, which provided promising results.

    A 3-D Shenzhen City Web platform based on the Web virtual reality geographical information system is presented. A 3-D global browser is employed to load multiple types of demand data from the city, such as 3-D building model data, residents' information, and real-time and historical traffic data. Using these data, a 3-D analysis and visualization of the city's information are conducted on a platform. The amount of information that can be visualized with this platform is very large, and the GIS-based navigational scheme enables great flexibility to access different available data sources. All the presented functions of the platform are extracted from the customers' practical demand. The system design considers some existing geographic human-computer interaction research results.
