    REBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ bulk superconductors are able to trap large magnetic fields and as a result they have potential to work as strong magnets. In this study, highly textured yttrium, gadolinium, and samarium based cuprate bulk superconductors were prepared using conventional top-seeded melt-textured growth, and magnetized by employing both field-cooling magnetization (FCM) and pulsed-field magnetization (PFM) techniques at 77 K. The same peak value of a trapped field was achieved using FCM and PFM, which means all the bulk samples were fully magnetized by using the PFM method. In addition, the magnitude of the pulsed field required to fully magnetize the bulk samples varied with rare-earth element in the (RE)BCO formulation.

    In order to enhance the flux pinning force density F p in magnetic fields for REBa 2 Cu 3 O v (RE123)-coated conductors, Hf and Zr doping are the very valid way of introducing the perovskite nanostructure as artificial pinning centers (APCs) into the superconductors. However, the studies for Hf-doped RE123 thin films fabricated by the fluorine-free metal organic deposition (FF-MOD), which is the easiest production process, have not been done yet. In this study, we have successfully fabricated Hf-doped FF-MOD GdBa 2 Cu 3 O v (Gd123) thin films on LaAlO3 substrates and investigated their flux pinning properties. Critical temperature for Gd123 thin films indicated around 92 K, and T c varied little by Hf doping. Hf 10 mol% doped film achieved high critical current densities of 2.72 mA.cm -2 at 77.3 K under 0 T, and 0.27 mA.cm -2 at 77.3 K under 1 T. With increasing Hf-doping amount, F p gradually increased, and the peak of Fp shifted to the high magnetic field side. The elementary pinning force and the effective pinning center density also increased. We believe that effective APCs, probably BaHfO 3 are introduced into FF-MOD Gd123 thin films by Hf doping.

    No-insulation (NI) REBCO pancake coils show high thermal stability, however the charging delay is an issue. Hence, to improve the charging delay, it was proposed that a stainless steel (SUS) tape was cowound between turns, called “metal-as-insulation” or “metal-insulation (MI),” to increase the turn-to-turn contact resistivity. The MI technique could make the turn-to-turn contact resistivity approximately 50 times large compared to a conventional NI REBCO pancake coil. This paper reports a bypass current behavior on the cross section of MI REBCO pancake coil using two-dimensional finite element method. The influence of the SUS tape thickness, the MI material, and the number of SUS tapes on the turn-to-turn contact resistivity is investigated. As the result, it is clarified that the turn-to-turn contact resistivity strongly depends on the surface condition and number of SUS tapes.

    This paper presents a method for measuring the capacitance of superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) junctions with a 4-K probe station. The probe station can be used to perform on-wafer characterization of sample lots at frequencies ranging from dc to microwave. In our study, we evaluated SIS junctions that had a variety of areas, and estimated the capacitance after subtracting the parasitic elements of the probe contact pad. The results show that the RNC products for the evaluated junctions were uniform within +/-5% across the wafer.

    In this study, the enhanced superconducting properties of single grain bulk Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) superconductors by the addition of ZnO and TiO 2 nano-rods (NRs) were investigated. The NRs were prepared using the electrospinning method, in which size is twice the coherence length of the superconductor and is intended supposed to serve as columnar defects to provide efficient pinning. The experimental results showed that there were no weak links formed by the addition of the NRs. All of the bulks exhibited a single grain structure, and the distribution profiles of the trapped fields were symmetrical. The value of the maximum trapped field (Bt, max) was enhanced to 0.12 T, which was 1.5 times higher than the undoped sample (approximately 0.08 T). In addition, JJ was also enhanced by the addition of the NRs. The self-field at 77 K was 4.6 χ 10 4 A cm -2 of the 0.05wt% ZnO NRsdoped and 0.1wt% TiO 2 NRs-doped samples, respectively, which was higher than that of the undoped sample of 2.5 χ 10 4 A cm -2 . A microstructural analysis demonstrated that there was no reaction occurred between the NRs and YBCO precursors during the melting process. The size and shape of the NRs found in the matrix of the grown bulk were the same as those of the precursors. Consequently, the enhanced superconductivities were then attributed to the increased interface areas between the NRs and the matrix.

    One of the major impediments to the industrial take-up of high-temperature superconductors is the paucity of comprehensive, reliable and relevant performance data on commercially available wires. To address this, the Robinson Research Institute is making available its internal database of wire performance data, acquired on our in-house 1 kA critical current measurement system. The database is freely accessible via the world wide web at http://www.victoria.ac.nz/robinson/hts-wire-database and allows download of both graphical images of the data as well as the underlying data files. The database will continue to be expanded into the future, and submissions of commercially available wires for independent characterization and inclusion are invited. We demonstrate the utility of these data in terms of a case study on the design of our 1.5 T 2G HTS MRI system and by outlining a comparison of correlations between low-temperature and 77 K performance across 2G HTS wires sourced from different manufacturers that demonstrates that this is useful only for wires of a particular type produced under similar conditions (for example, several batches produced using the same process). These examples highlight the need for complete characterization of different wires under the operating conditions of interest.

    Superconducting magnets with magnetic fields of approximately 20 T will be needed for future high-energy accelerators, such as the future circular collider at CERN and/or the Muon Collider in the United States. Such field strengths exceed the levels achievable using low-temperature superconductors, such as Nb 3 Sn or Nb 3 Al. Only high-temperature superconductors can currently achieve such high field strengths. However, there has been a little research published on the electrical transport properties of REBCO coated conductors in high-field low-temperature magnet applications. Thus, we have started the critical current characterization of commercially available REBCO-coated conductors in fields of up to 18 T at 4.2 K. This paper reports some of the critical current measurement results at 4.2 and 77 K for conductors from four different manufacturers: Fujikura Ltd.; SuNAM Co. Ltd.; SuperOx Japan LLC; and SuperPower Inc.

    Self-assembled artificial pinning centers (APCs) with controlled morphology are key to optimal pinning in superconducting YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-x (YBCO) thin films and coated conductors. Here, we investigate the transport critical current density $J_{c}$ ( H , T , θ ) of YBCO films with BaZrO 3 nanorods (BZO-NRs) and 3 vol.% Y 2 O 3 nanoparticles (Y 2 O 3 -NPs) as the BZO-NRs concentration is systematically varied in the range of 2–6 vol.%. We show that the growth kinetics of APCs in these BZO-Y 2 O 3 double-doped YBCO films differs significantly from YBCO films doped with BZO only. In particular, the presence of Y 2 O 3 -NPs reduced the formation of the aligned BZO-NRs in the c-axis or normal of the film, enabling a high-concentration isotropic BZO-based APCs to form at high BZO doping. This resulted in a significantly enhanced pinning force density $F_{p}\,(H)$ as well as isotropic pinning landscape. By fitting the Dew–Hughes equation of the pinning force density $F_{{{p}}}\,(H)$ at different temperatures $T\,= \,{\text{50}}\hbox{--} {\text{80}}\,{\text{K}}$ and angles of H at $\theta \,= \,0\,(H{\rm{/ / }}$ c-axis), 45°, and 90° ( H //ab), we extract the scaling behaviors of the $F_{{{p}}}\,(H)$ associated with the BZO-NRs and isotropic BZO and Y 2 O 3 NPs. This result sheds light on approaches towards interactive control of strong and isotropic APCs in YBCO films and coated conductors.

    In this paper we report on the structural and superconducting properties of an epitaxially grown Ba(Fe 1-x Ni x ) 2 As 2 thin film using pulsed laser deposition. As target we used an optimally Ni-doped single crystal prepared from self-flux. The superconducting transition temperature of 21.4 K is among the highest values reported for Ni doping exceeding the critical temperature of the single-crystal target. The upper critical field shows a very high slope, which is connected to two-dimensional effect. Transmission electron microscopy investigations indicate planar defects, which might be the origin of this behavior.

    [100]-tilt YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-x bicrystal Josephson junctions are good candidates to realize high values of characteristic voltages I c R n , which are expected due to large energy gaps in high-T c materials. Here, we report on detailed electrical characterization of [100]-tilt YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-x bicrystal Josephson junctions, which have the maximal I c R n -values up to 9.4 mV, for resistances R n in the range from 0.9 to 400Ω. The I-V curves have been fitted well to those of the RSJ model with ac-coupled resistive shunts R e . The first derivatives dV/dI versus V have demonstrated a reproducible set of resonances of two types. Numerical simulations of the dV/dI versus V for Josephson junctions coupled with external THz RLC-resonators have been made and both types of resonances have been fitted. A form of the I-V curves and resonances in the first derivatives dV/dI versus V have been attributed to intrinsic broadband and frequency-selective losses, due to interaction of Josephson oscillations with transverse and longitudinal IR-active phonons in YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-x electrodes.
