    The U.S. LHC Accelerator Research Program (LARP) and CERN are developing high-gradient Nb 3 Sn magnets for the high luminosity LHC interaction regions. Magnetic measurements of the first 1.5-m long, 150-mm aperture model quadrupole, MQXFS1, were performed during magnet assembly at LBNL, as well as during cryogenic testing at Fermilab's Vertical Magnet Test Facility. This paper reports on the results of these magnetic characterization measurements, as well as on the performance of new probes developed for the tests.

    New internal-tin (IT) processed Nb 3 Sn wires using Cu-alloy matrix instead of pure Cu have been developed. Brass is an attractive alloy as the matrix, because Zn seems effective to accelerate Nb 3 Sn synthesis. Zn remains homogeneously in the matrix after the Nb 3 Sn synthesis expecting improvement of the mechanical tolerance of the wire, which may be preferable particularly for react and wind magnet applications. Here, two newly designed wires using gold brass (Cu-15wt%Zn) were fabricated: 1) single stack type and 2) multifilamentary (MF) type. Electron probe microanalysis results indicate enhancement of Sn activity in the matrix. Thicker Nb 3 Sn layers were formed, and residual Sn content in the matrix became smaller compared with Cu matrix samples. The J c characteristics of the brass matrix wire is appreciably higher than that of the Cu matrix wire. In MF-type wire, inside Nb cores were fully reacted, although unreacted Nb parts were found in outermost filaments. More appreciable reduction of residual Sn content in the matrix was found in the MF-type wire. Present new Nb 3 Sn wire may be useful for future application of superconductivity.

    High-performance Fe-Se-Te (FST) films are favorable for revealing the relationships between the crystal structure and the superconducting properties of the material because of their simple structures. Therefore, it is particularly important to prepare high-quality “11” thin films. Herein, we focused on the thickness and deposition temperature dependence of T c zero and found that the thickness of about 200 nm and the deposition temperature of 300 °C are the optimal parameters for growing high-quality FST films on CaF 2 and SrTiO3 substrates, which exhibit T c zero of 18.8K and 17 K, respectively. Magnetic J c values of FST films grown on CaF 2 and SrTiO 3 are both larger than 2 × 10 6 A·cm -2 at 4.2 K and self-field, significantly higher than that of FST single crystals.

    Based on the pre-existing assembled, stacked, or twisted structures of high temperature superconducting (HTS) wires, a novel soldered-stacked-square (3S) HTS wire is suggested and developed through narrowing, stacking, and soldering processes in this study. For the fabrication processes of the 3S wire, a narrow 2G tape with 1 mm width is applied, and the stacking and soldering processes are completed simultaneously. To confirm the performance of the 3S HTS wire, several 3S samples are fabricated. For the 3S HTS samples, we evaluate typical electrical and mechanical properties, and investigated for the feasibility of the 3S HTS wire in the HTS applications. The test results show that measured critical currents of two 3S wire samples are 170 and 255 A, and their curves are typical ones of HTS tapes. The measured self-field ac loss is also reasonable, which is analyzed from both theoretical models of the elliptical and thin strip equations. Moreover, the minimum bending diameter for the 3S samples is approximately 60 mm, and the allowable axial tensile force is 350 N. These mechanical properties of 3S wire are satisfied for the HTS applications significantly. Finally, the smallest round structure of the HTS wire is conceptually suggested for the 3S HTS wire.

    MgB 2 /Nb/Monel multifilamentary wires were fabricated using amorphous and crystalline boron powders by an internal Mg diffusion (IMD) process. The microstructure, morphology, and the critical current density (J c ) of the reacted MgB 2 layers in the multifilamentary wires made using different boron powders were analyzed and compared. The purity of boron powder influences greatly the transport properties of MgB 2 wires. The J c as high as 6.1 × 10 4 A cm -2 at 4.2 K, 10 T is obtained in the seven-core MgB 2 wire made using amorphous boron powder. The IMD-processed seven-core MgB 2 wire fabricated using high-purity crystalline boron powder has also a high J c of 4.9 × 10 4 A cm -2 at 4.2 K and 10 T. However, the seven-core MgB 2 wire prepared using low-purity crystalline boron powder has a relatively low J c compared with the others, which is expected to allow the fabrication of large-scale and low-cost superconducting wires for practical application. The further improvement of layer J c , nonbarrier J c and engineering critical current density J e is necessary because of the irregular subfilaments and the inhomogeneous thickness of the reacted MgB 2 layer in multifilamentary wires.

    High-temperature superconducting strand with high current capacity is expected to have widely potential applications transferring electric power and superconducting power devices since it is easy to insulate to avoid point charging. Quench characteristics of a 2-kA quasi-isotropic superconducting strands made of REBCO tape with copper sheath in liquid nitrogen (LN2) were investigated numerically and experimentally in this paper. The minimum quench energy and quench propagation velocity of the superconducting strand were simulated and measured. The simulation results are in very good agreement with the experiment. Due to high current density and quasi-isotropic critical current in magnetic field, this kind of superconducting strand has potential application in high-current transmission and high-field magnets.

    Insulator-like FeSe epitaxial thin films were grown at three different growth conditions (i.e., at Fe flux rates = 2, 4, and 6 × 10 -6 Pa under a constant Se flux rate), and the superconducting properties induced by electric double-layer transistors (EDLTs) were investigated in relation to the crystal/defect structures of the FeSe channels. The maximum critical temperature (T c ) of 35 K was obtained for the FeSe channel grown at the intermediate Fe flux rate. The other EDLTs (i.e., grown at a higher and a lower Fe flux rates, respectively) exhibited lower T c of ≈20 K, which were in the underand the overdoped states, respectively, as confirmed by Hall effect measurements. The underdoped state of the channel grown at the higher rate is explained by electron traps at surface pits. This study revealed that high crystallinity and atomically flat surfaces are the key factors to achieving the optimum doping level and inducing the high T c in insulator-like FeSe EDLTs.

    A common problem of superconducting devices is to survive during a fault with a current overload. At a fault, superconducting device will have strong overheating and burning out is possible. The problem becomes more serious in case if a high-temperature superconducting (HTS) wire has a weak point where the critical current is less than the average over a wire. Such a weak point could be the point of origination of strong overheating within a very localized area. This can lead to burning and destroying of an HTS device. To study this problem, we developed the experimental setup with the spatial resolution 2 mm and the time resolution 1 ms to observe a local temperature/voltage evolution in HTS tapes overloaded by currents. The preliminary experiments were performed to measure local heat/voltage development on 2G HTS tapes with an artificial weak point. Local heat/voltage evolutions have been measured and compared with calculations by our model developed earlier.

    The top seeded melt growth (TSMG) process is used widely to grow single grain, bulk superconductors for high field engineering applications. Within the TSMG process, the flux pinning ability of a single-grain bulk superconductor can be improved effectively by reducing the size of starting precursor powders prior to melt processing. This paper investigates the preparation of Y-123/nano-Y 2 O 3 single-grain samples based on TSMG process. A large number of microcracks and significant inhomogeneity were found in samples containing Pt and CeO 2 additives, respectfully. This reduces the performance of samples made from nano Y 2 O 3 starring powders. A pretreatment of the starting powders was developed to decrease microcracks and improve the homogeneity of Y-123/nano-Y 2 O 3 single grain samples. The influence of Pt and CeO 2 doping on the superconducting properties of the fully processed single grain were also investigated in detail. The Y-123/nano-Y 2 O 3 based samples exhibit features that are rarely seen in conventional YBCO single grain, bulk superconductors.
