    In smart cities, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) act as a type of core infrastructure that collects data from the city to implement smart services. The security of WSNs is one of the key issues of smart cities. In resource-restrained WSNs, dynamic ongoing or unknown attacks usually steer clear of isolated defense components. Therefore, to resolve this problem, we propose a hierarchical framework based on chance discovery and usage control (UCON) technologies to improve the security of WSNs while still taking the low-complexity and high security requirements of WSNs into account. The features of continuous decision and dynamic attributes in UCON can address ongoing attacks using advanced persistent threat detection. In addition, we use a dynamic adaptive chance discovery mechanism to detect unknown attacks. To design and implement a system using the mechanism described above, a unified framework is proposed in which low-level attack detection with simple rules is performed in sensors, and high-level attack detection with complex rules is performed in sinks and at the base station. Moreover, software-defined networking and network function virtualization technologies are used to perform attack mitigation when either low-level or high-level attacks are detected. An experiment was performed to acquire an attack data set for evaluation. Then, a simulation was created to evaluate the resource consumption and attack detection rate. The results demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed scheme.

    Bilateral teleoperation systems with haptic feedback allow human users to interact with objects or perform complex tasks in remote or inaccessible environments. Communication delays in teleoperation systems jeopardize system stability and transparency, leading to degraded system performance and poor user experience. In this paper, we provide a survey of the model-mediated teleoperation (MMT) approach, which has been developed to guarantee both system stability and transparency in the presence of arbitrary communication delays. This survey focuses on two major parts: 1) the historical development of the MMT approach from the late 1980s to the present and 2) the main challenges facing the design of a reliable MMT system. Along with the discussion of the MMT challenges and the proposed solutions, a series of experiments has been conducted to compare the performance between the existing techniques and to supply data that were missing in the previous studies on the MMT approach.

    Providing reliable broadband wireless communications in high mobility environments, such as high-speed railway systems, remains one of the main challenges faced by the development of the next generation wireless systems. This paper provides a systematic review of high mobility communications. We first summarize a list of key challenges and opportunities in high mobility communication systems, then provide comprehensive reviews of techniques that can address these challenges and utilize the unique opportunities. The review covers a wide spectrum of communication operations, including the accurate modeling of high mobility channels, the transceiver structures that can exploit the properties of high mobility environments, the signal processing techniques that can harvest the benefits (e.g., Doppler diversity) and mitigate the impairments (e.g., carrier frequency offset, intercarrier interference, channel estimation errors) in high mobility systems, and the mobility management and network architectures that are designed specifically for high mobility systems. The survey focuses primarily on physical layer operations, which are affected the most by the mobile environment, with some additional discussions on higher layer operations, such as handover management and control-plane/user-plane decoupling, which are essential to high mobility operations. Future research directions on high mobility communications are summarized at the end of this paper.

    Recent innovation in microelectrical-mechanical systems (MEMSs) and plasmonics-based technologies has opened up perspectives for label-free sensing of biological and chemical analytes. Label-free sensing would enable increased sensitivity and miniaturization capabilities for biosensing devices. Silicon carbide is a semiconductor material that happens to possess ideal properties for augmenting both the MEMS/nanoelectromechanical systems and the plasmonics routes. It has remarkable chemical and biological inertness resulting in a high degree of biocompatibility, as well as pronounced mechanical resilience. In addition, it is an efficient (low loss) plasmonic metamaterial. Its cubic polytype can be grown on silicon wafers, allowing easy micromachining into building blocks for sensing devices, scalable to large volume production. Finally, silicon carbide is an ideal starting material for a controlled, wafer-scale growth of graphene, offering an additional wealth of excellent properties for nanosensing. The combination of all of these capabilities makes silicon carbide an outstanding material platform for the realization of label-free, analyte-specific, and highly sensitive biochemical molecule detection systems. These technologies will open exciting horizons in terms of high throughput, efficient drug screening, and early pathogen detection.

    Bifacial photovoltaic cell and module technology have been well understood for many years and produced in quantity by companies, such as Sanyo/Panasonic, Hitachi, PVGS, BSolar, Yingli, and LG. While manufacturers are already producing bifacial modules, there is slow adoption into the market place due to a deficiency in standardized testing and modeling techniques used to predict the performance of bifacial systems. As such, Prism Solar conducted a multi-variable, multi-site testing program to determine the impact that common installation variables have on the yearly energy output of its bifacial solar modules. The effects of the module's minimum height ratio, tilt angle, and ground albedo on the annual energy output were studied through direct field measurement. Based on these results, a best-fit model that links these variables to the annual energy output is presented. We believe this is the largest single collection of bifacial experiments presented to date, and one of the first general bifacial energy models publicly disclosed for general use. In addition, a comparison of the results of using this best-fit bifacial energy yield model derived by the authors with third-party bifacial data is also presented; this serves to validate the authors' model and adds to the utility of this paper by presenting and combining multiple sources of bifacial data.

    This paper presents a simple mathematical expression to model the effect of statistical dopant fluctuations on threshold voltage (V th ) of junction field-effect transistors (JFETs). The random discrete doping (RDD) in the active device area is used to derive an analytical model to compute the standard deviation, σV th ,RDD of the V th -distribution for any arbitrary channel doping profiles. The model shows that the Vth-variability in JFETs depends on the active device area, channel doping concentration, and the depth of the channel depletion region of the gate/channel pn-junction. The model is applied to compute σV th ,RDD for symmetric and asymmetric source/drain double-gate n-channel JFETs. The simulation results show that the model can be used for predicting V th -variability in JFETs.

    A wireless multihop infrastructure (WMI) employs homogeneous and easily deployable wireless routers to facilitate disaster-resilient Internet access in smart cities, emergency situations, and the Internet of Things. On the other hand, however, a WMI is subject to energy constraints, carries unbalanced traffic, and has weaknesses in terms of maintenance, such as the lack of human management. Therefore, efficiently sharing network tasks and energy consumption in a WMI are essential to network sustainability. In this paper, we consider the problem of explicit differentiation presentation for improving network sustainability, which involves two aspects. One is the problem of quantifying the differentiation of network activities and energy consumption. The other is the problem of utilizing the differentiation factor of each node for routing operations so as to regulate network packet flows for sustaining Internet access in a WMI. We examine the differentiation of network activities and energy consumption in WMIs by considering network activities, including not only packet transmission and reception but also packet overhearing, and other types of energy consumption. Based on the quantification of energy differentiation at each base station (BS), we design a novel router metric that enables an efficient sharing of network activities among BSs. The theoretical analyses of energy differentiation were validated based on the packet-level simulation. The simulation results demonstrate that our proposed router metric based on energy differentiation outperforms various other competitive metrics of multihop wireless networks to improve network sustainability for different network models.

    Smart city sensing calls for crowdsensing via mobile devices that are equipped with various built-in sensors. As incentivizing users to participate in distributed sensing is still an open research issue, the trustworthiness of crowdsensed data is expected to be a grand challenge if this cloud-inspired recruitment of sensing services is to be adopted. Recent research proposes reputation-based user recruitment models for crowdsensing; however, there is no standard way of identifying adversaries in smart city crowdsensing. This paper adopts previously proposed vote-based approaches, and presents a thorough performance study of vote-based trustworthiness with trusted entities that are basically a subset of the participating smartphone users. Those entities are called trustworthy anchors of the crowdsensing system. Thus, an anchor user is fully trustworthy and is fully capable of voting for the trustworthiness of other users, who participate in sensing of the same set of phenomena. Besides the anchors, the reputations of regular users are determined based on vote-based (distributed) reputation. We present a detailed performance study of the anchor-based trustworthiness assurance in smart city crowdsensing through simulations, and compare it with the purely vote-based trustworthiness approach without anchors, and a reputation-unaware crowdsensing approach, where user reputations are discarded. Through simulation findings, we aim at providing specifications regarding the impact of anchor and adversary populations on crowdsensing and user utilities under various environmental settings. We show that significant improvement can be achieved in terms of usefulness and trustworthiness of the crowdsensed data if the size of the anchor population is set properly.

    Energy harvesting systems that couple solar panels with supercapacitor buffers offer an attractive option for powering computational systems deployed in field settings, where power infrastructure is inaccessible. Supercapacitors offer a particularly compelling advantage over electrochemical batteries for such settings because of their ability to survive many more charge-discharge cycles. We share UR-SolarCap-a versatile open source design for such a harvesting system that targets embedded system applications requiring power in the 1-10 W range. Our system is designed for high efficiency and controllability and, importantly, supports auto-wakeup from a state of complete energy depletion. This paper summarizes our design methodology, and the rationale behind our design and configuration decisions. Results from the operation and testing of a system realized with our design demonstrate: 1) an achievable harvester efficiency of 85%; 2) the ability to maintain sustained operation over a two week period when the solar panel and buffer are sized appropriately; and 3) a robust auto-wakeup functionality that resumes system operation upon the availability of harvestable energy after a period in which the system has been forced into a dormant state because of a lack of usable energy. To facilitate the use of the system by researchers exploring embedded system applications in environments that lack a power infrastructure, our designs are available for download as an archive containing design schematics, Printed Circuit Board (PCB) files, firmware code, and a component list for assembly of the system. In addition, a limited number of pre-assembled kits are available upon request.

    Thanks to advances in electric wheelchair design, persons with motor impairments due to diseases, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), have tools to become more independent and mobile. However, an electric wheelchair generally requires considerable skill to learn how to use and operate. Moreover, some persons with motor disabilities cannot drive an electric wheelchair manually (even with a joystick), because they lack the physical ability to control their hand movement (such is the case with people with ALS). In this paper, we propose a novel system that enables a person with motor disability to control a wheelchair via eye-gaze and to provide a continuous, real-time navigation in unknown environments. The system comprises a Permobile M400 wheelchair, eye tracking glasses, a depth camera to capture the geometry of the ambient space, a set of ultrasound and infrared sensors to detect obstacles with low proximity that are out of the field of view for the depth camera, a laptop placed on a flexible mount for maximized comfort, and a safety off switch to turn off the system whenever needed. First, a novel algorithm is proposed to support continuous, real-time target identification, path planning, and navigation in unknown environments. Second, the system utilizes a novel N-cell grid-based graphical user interface that adapts to input/output interfaces specifications. Third, a calibration method for the eye tracking system is implemented to minimize the calibration overheads. A case study with a person with ALS is presented, and interesting findings are discussed. The participant showed improved performance in terms of calibration time, task completion time, and navigation speed for a navigation trips between office, dining room, and bedroom. Furthermore, debriefing the caregiver has also shown promising results: the participant enjoyed higher level of confidence driving the wheelchair and experienced no collisions through all the experiment.
