    Free-space optical communication links operating over lognormal turbulence channels using on-off keying (OOK) are studied in this paper. Such systems can suffer from irreducible error floors that result from the use of demodulation with fixed and unoptimized detection thresholds. The resulting error floors are analyzed for the general case of low- and high-state offsets (i.e., finite extinction ratios). An electrical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) optimized detection system is applied. The system uses the electrical SNRs to implement adaptive detection thresholds and eliminate the error floors. The system can accommodate operation with finite extinction ratios, as it uses the method of moments and maximum likelihhod estimation techniques to estimate the low- and high-state offsets and electrical SNR. Numerical results show that the SNR gap between the electrical-SNR-optimized detection system and the adaptive detection system is 2.3 dB at a bit-error rate of 10 -5 without a state offset. The SNR gap increases to 4.5 dB with a state offset of ξ=0.2 .

    A Taguchi particle swarm optimization (TPSO) with a three-layer feedforward artificial neural network (ANN) is used to model and optimize the chemical composition of a steel bar. The novel contribution of a TPSO is the use of a Taguchi method mechanism to exploit better solutions in the search space through iterations, the use of the conventional non-linear PSO to increase convergence speed, and the use of random movement for particle diversity. The exploration and exploitation capability of the TPSO were confirmed by performance comparisons with other PSO-based algorithms in solving high-dimensional global numerical optimization problems. Experiments in this paper showed that the TPSO provides higher computational efficiency and higher robustness when solving problems involving seven non-linear benchmark functions, including three unimodal functions, one multimodal functions, two rotated functions, and one shifted functions. The results for the computational experiments show that the TPSO outperforms other PSO-based algorithms reported in the literature. Finally, the results obtained by a TPSO-based ANN model of the chemical composition of the steel bar were consistent with the actual data. That is, the proposed TPSO with three-layer feedforward ANN can be used in practical applications.

    Power and energy minimization is a critical concern for the battery life, reliability, and yield of many minimum-sized SRAMs. In this paper, we extend our previously proposed hybrid analytical-empirical model for minimizing and predicting the delay and delay variability of SRAMs, VAR-TX, to a new enhanced version, exVAR-TX, to minimize and predict the power/energy and power/energy variability of a 16-nm 6T-SRAM under the influence of the three major types of variations: Fabrication, Operation, and Implementation. Using exVAR-TX for architectural optimization [exhaustively computing and comparing the range of feasible architectures subject to interdie (die-to-die/D2D) and intradie (within-die/WID) process and operation variations (PVT), electromigration (EM), negative bias temperature instability (NBTI), and soft-errors, among others] on top of deploying the most recent state of the art effective mitigation techniques we show that energy and energy-delay-product (EDP) of 64KB 16-nm 6T-SRAM could be reduced by ~12.5X and ~33%, respectively, as compared to the existing conventional designs.

    초록

    Key generation from the randomness of wireless channels is a promising alternative to public key cryptography for the establishment of cryptographic keys between any two users. This paper reviews the current techniques for wireless key generation. The principles, performance metrics and key generation procedure are comprehensively surveyed. Methods for optimizing the performance of key generation are also discussed. Key generation applications in various environments are then introduced along with the challenges of applying the approach in each scenario. The paper concludes with some suggestions for future studies.

    Wireless multihop infrastructures (WMIs) are promising network platforms that facilitate applications, such as smart cities, emergency responses, and outdoor events. WMIs can allow coverage over large areas with low setup and maintenance overheads. However, WMIs may be susceptible to loss of network connectivity caused by node damage or energy depletion. The end-to-end reachability is essential for the WMI to provide network service to users. This paper studies the problem of network self-recovery to sustain reachability in a WMI network by utilizing autonomous mobile base stations (MBSs). It is assumed that MBS is able to move to and pause or stop at positions in the network area. An MBS could be a self-driving robotic vehicle, or vehicle driven directly or remotely by a human. The proposed MBS approach, MBS-Fit, is a distributed and packet-interaction-based mechanism that allows MBS to automatically construct new routes, assess, and adaptively respond to the fitness of pause positions, such that MBS can provide links to recover the disconnected WMIs. We adopt packet-level evaluation to study the automatic interactions of MBS with the static WMI objects. In particular, the network reachability is measured by the amount of packets successfully delivered from users to the gateway through the WMI. Simulation results reveal that the proposed MBS-Fit approach achieves up to 30% improvement of network reachability in terms of successfully packet delivery compared with the conventional MBS. MBS-Fit mechanism also enables up to 80% improvement in terms of number of packets forwarded at MBS.

    This paper presents a cost-effective system-level restoration scheme to improve power grids resilience by efficient response to the damages due to natural or manmade disasters. A post-disaster decision making model is developed to find the optimal repair schedule, unit commitment solution, and system configuration in restoration of the damaged power grid. The physical constraints of the power grid, associated with the unit commitment and restoration, are considered in the proposed model. The value of lost load is used as a viable measure to represent the criticality of each load in the power grid. The model is formulated as a mixed-integer program and, then, is decomposed into an integer master problem and a dual linear subproblem to be solved using Benders decomposition algorithm. Different scenarios are developed to analyze the proposed model on the standard IEEE 118-bus test system. This paper provides a prototype and a proof of concept for utility companies to consider economics of disaster and include unit commitment model into the post-disaster restoration process.

    Stroke is a worldwide healthcare problem, which often causes long-term motor impairment, handicap, and disability. Optical motion analysis systems are commonly used for impairment assessment due to high accuracy. However, the requirement of equipment-heavy and large laboratory space together with operational expertise makes these systems impractical for local clinic and home use. We propose an alternative, cost-effective and portable, decision support system for optical motion analysis, using a single camera. The system relies on detecting and tracking markers attached to subject's joints, data analytics for calculating relevant rehabilitation parameters, visualization, and robust classification based on graph-based signal processing. Experimental results show that the proposed decision support system has the potential to offer stroke survivors and clinicians an alternative, affordable, accurate, and convenient impairment assessment option suitable for home healthcare and telerehabilitation.

    According to estimates from the United Nations, while the world population is likely to reach 9 billion by 2050 (from around 7 billion today), the water resources available to cater to this population are likely to remain similar to what they are today. Therefore, there is a growing concern to reduce water wastage and improve the efficiency of water distribution systems, in particular, urban water systems given the proliferation in both the number of cities that are springing up and the number of people moving to live in cities. Motivated by this, the European Commission under the aegis of the Framework Program (FP7) funded the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Solutions for the Efficient Water Resources Management project. This Smart Water project is aimed at investigating the role of ICT in monitoring and efficiently managing urban water systems, in particular, exploring the deployment of sensors, communication technologies, and associated decision support systems in utility providers water networks geared toward addressing problems, such as leakage management, demand management, asset management, and so on. This article elaborates on the wireless connectivity considerations, proposes a total cost of ownership framework for evaluating candidate solutions, and highlights experiences from Smart Water case studies involving two utilities in Europe.

    According to the growth of mobile devices equipped with a GPS receiver, a variety of location-based services (LBSs) have been launched. Since location information may reveal private information, preserving location privacy has become a significant issue. Previous studies proposed methods to preserve a users' privacy; however, most of them do not take physical constraints into consideration. In this paper, we focus on such constraints and propose a location privacy preservation method that can be applicable to a real environment. In particular, our method anonymizes the user's location by generating dummies which we simulate to behave like real human. It also considers traceability of the user's locations to quickly recover from an accidental reveal of the user's location. We conduct an experiment using five users' real GPS trajectories and compared our method with previous studies. The results show that our method ensures to anonymize the user's location within a pre-determined range. It also avoids fixing the relative positions of the user and dummies, which may give a hint for an LBS provider to identify the real user. In addition, we conducted a user experiment with 22 participants to evaluate the robustness of our method against humans. We asked participants to observe movements of a user and dummies and try to find the real user. As a result, we confirmed that our method can anonymize the users' locations even against human's observation.

    In this paper, the impact of considering diffuse multipath components at mm-wave frequencies as well as the significance of selecting appropriate diffuse scattering model parameters is shown. Two different diffuse models, namely, the Lambertian model and the directive model, have been parameterized for several materials typically present in indoor environments. These models are formulated to embed the diffuse scattering phenomenon easily into ray tracing tools. The estimation of the parameters has been performed by comparing measurements and simulations using the models. Once the best fitting parameters have been estimated, they are included in the diffuse components simulation section of a general ray tracing tool. This tool has been used to simulate the power delay profile at 60 GHz in an indoor scenario, including single and double bounce diffuse components. Thanks to the estimated model parameters, the wireless channel at the 60-GHz band can be analyzed, including the diffuse scattering phenomenon, without the need for any previous measurement or simulation. Thus, the channel analysis with ray tracing tools, including dense components, becomes easier, faster, and more reliable.
